Why do recruiting rankings put so much weight on total numbers

Jun 8, 2022, 7:03 AM

instead of average score of the recruits? We currently have 7 commits...one five star and 4 four stars. Teams like Texas Tech, Cincy and Northwestern are ranked ahead of us solely because they have 15-20 commits, even though they have no five stars and barely any four stars!

Shouldn't quality count for much more the quantity, since at the end of the cycle, the total numbers for each school will be much closer.

We are currently ranked 13th on 247, but are actually 5th on average score.

Yea, thats been my argument for years

And usually why garbage teams like the coots are ranked higher than they should be. They sign 1411 3* players and thereby pull a top 20 class and brag that they are only a few spots behind us. At the end of the day, doesnt really matter, but Im with ya.

It all evens out in time. Recruiting rankings in June are like preseason football rankings.

Quantity and quality are both important. Every player will not pan out. There be injuries and attrition plus quality depth keeps everyone working for playing time.

A better metric may be the blue chip ratio. It is measured by the percentage of players on a roster who were 4* & 5* recruits. A team needs to be at least 50% to have a chance at a Natty. The following article is for 2021 but explains the concept. This is why i state that last year was a down year in recruiting for Clemson even though we were ranked at 10th in the nation but our blue chip ration was down at 50%.

None of that is relevant to the class ranking though

Jun 8, 2022, 11:02 AM

Your class rank is what it is, no way to know who will or wont pan out, get injured, transfer etc. But giving a high class rank because of quantity is silly. I usually look at rank based on average star rating, which is a much better indicator of the strength of the class.

Because it takes at least 65 players to have a football team. One or two "stars" mean very little.

Everything you said is wrong

Jun 8, 2022, 11:55 AM

Lets say I start a college football team and sign 65 players. Simply by math Im going to have one of the best classes in the country. Sure we'll loose every game because the players all suck, but there were just so dang many I had a great class rank! Guess those one or two stars do actually matter.

Because what other useless metric would people find something to complain about at 7:03 AM?

All you have to do is sort it by a different metric...it's not some big conspiracy.

It's also 6/8 months from the signing days so what does it matter where we are ranked?

to give people something to click and post about

Geville Tiger on Clemson football , "Dabo's only problem is he has to deal with turd fans questioning every move he makes.”

It allows room for their consultants to arbitrarily personalize their rankings, more clicks; lessening the value of the most important metric *rating per player. It may also be a tool of control which allows them the ability to tweak the rankings w/o the appearance of doing so.

Re: Why do recruiting rankings put so much weight on total numbers

It has never made sense. We could sign the top 6 QB's, top 10 WR's, top 6 RB's, and top 3 TE's and would have the #1 ranked recruiting class.

Clemson doesn't care about basketball....as evidenced by Brown-L getting 14 years.

Because the more players you sign, the better odds you

Jun 8, 2022, 12:11 PM

have of signing players that help the program.
