Why didn't Venables coach Oklahoma in the bowl

Dec 30, 2021, 8:06 AM

Why bring Stoops off the golf course to coach the team, when Veneables is standing right there? Stoops hasn't coached OK in years (Riley bolted for USC). Don't understand rationale...

The same reason none of the other coaches that moved didn't, it is not what schools do.

Do those other schools also bring in a retired former coach for the game?

No, someone already on staff coaches 99’99999% of the time.

Riley may have taken many of the upper level assistants, so they would be off the table. OU may have felt none remaining were capable or would be too distracted looking for next job.

Besides, Stoops has remained more involved with OU than most former coaches with their respective programs.

Stoops was brought in before Coach V was hired.

Not always the case. Danny Ford's first game as HC was the Gator Bowl and Tommy West first game at Clemson was the Peach Bowl.

OU made the decision to bring Stoops back...

before BV was hired.

I thought it was a cool idea. I wish Danny could walk the Tiger sideline one more time. For a bowl, a fun idea for players as well.

Never seen in all the years of watching football see a new coach, coach in the Bowl Game unless he was already on Staff. Stoops was there as a motivator, the remaining staff were the ones calling the plays and “COACHING.”

I like the idea of bringing Danny back for one last hurrah, but I don't think todays players would tolerate being talked to or treated way Danny was accustomed to.

By not adding the responsibilities of the bowl game on Coach Venables, he is able to concentrate on the transition into next year and the tail end of recruiting (or possibly retention of players). He also would have been going into the game nearly blind regarding his own team.
