Why Didn't BV Pressure Pickett more?

Oct 25, 2021, 11:17 AM

I know he is a good runner and accurate passer, but I recall he threw the ball away when he was pressured. I just feel that we should have done that more - but, I'm no coach. GO TIGERS!!

We put considerable pressure on him, but he is a veteran,

Oct 25, 2021, 11:23 AM

and very adept at stepping up in the pocket when he felt the outside rush.

And, unlike us, he had receivers who could not only get open, they could catch the ball when he threw it to them. What a novel concept THAT is!

No. After they converted 3&10 on their first scoring drive

Oct 25, 2021, 3:30 PM

I think we only sent 5 guys maybe three more times all game. BV backed off and we literally didnt stop them the rest of the game.

We have few defensive tackles and our defense gets tired

Oct 25, 2021, 11:26 AM

because our offense is soul-suckingly bad. (shout out to Beck)

Best description of our offense I’ve seen and will steal. Soul suckingly bad. Spot on.

It was stolen from Beck

"I ain't gonna work for no soul-sucking jerk!"

The D had defended around 65 plays going into the last drive

Cant use the "tired" excuse that game. It was a poor job of BV late in the 1H and all 2H.

Maybe because their O line was good, he is very good and our D backs and safeties are not so good.

He sent plenty of pressure, but he did it in different ways than a traditional LB blitz.

We ran more zone blitzes than I have seen at any point this season.

We also sent DBs a number of times as well.

Both of these were combined with the traditional LB blitzes that most fans recognize.

The problem as the game progressed was that the DTs were struggling to close the pocket from the front and so when anybody penetrated from the edge, Pickett was starting to step up and have easy passing lanes or running lanes.

This was especially true when we sent the zone blitzes because several times we had DEs covering a zone while LBs or DBs blitzed which created an easy pitch and catch if Pickett was able to evade the initial pressure.

Those zone blitzes can wreak havoc on a QB, and did with Pickett last season, but they must get to the QB quickly. Pickett being able to avoid the pressure and being more seasoned than he was last year allowed him to have some success against that look several times on key 3rd downs.

It didn't hurt that the officials allowed Pitt's OL to hold

Oct 25, 2021, 11:37 AM

I was at the game but I was talking to a friend who watched the TV broadcast and he said the commentators were pretty much justifying it by saying "technically holding can be called on every play".

Sometimes good things fall apart so better things can fall together.

They called more holding penalties than I have seen against

Oct 25, 2021, 12:35 PM

us all year

Yes almost word for word on one of the Pitt holding calls:

Announcer #1: "There it is with the jersey stretching away."

Announcer #2: "I disagree with that call because usually officials don't throw the flag if OL are keeping their hands inside and that jersey pull was inside of his pads."

Meanwhile Murphy was on the sideline having to get a new jersey because the OL ripped the 9 and the 8 off of his original (basically).

No excuse, but it is becoming increasingly hard for defensive linemen. The grasping of defensive linemen's jerseys up near the shoulder pads is totally ignored by officials. With this leverage, the offensive linemen have a huge advantage. They have learned to conceal a lot of this by grasping the jerseys near the neck. It seems that the better the defensive lineman, the more the holding is allowed. One of our greatest strengths is lessened by all of this.

Grady Garrett was the master at avoiding that. He would either stay low and prevent it from happening or he would use his hands to "chop" the offensive linemans hands away. Marion Hobby and Dan Brooks were great coaches that taught the finer points most fans didnt recognize.

We need to teach our OL to exploit the "borderline hold" technique. Sure seems like everyone else does it

Didn't you see that td right before half? Good reason not to pressure

2024 white level memberbadge-donor-20yr.jpg flag link military_tech thumb_downthumb_up

The defense probably played their worst game of the season

Oct 25, 2021, 11:58 AM

but the defense is the last thing I’m worried about right now. I’m sure the defense will improve but I don’t share that same optimism for all of our problems on offense.

We sent the house on the 4th down play that ended up a walk-in TD. We didn't get home, and a terrible flat-footed play by the safety destroyed our hope and any chance at momentum.
