Why can't we immerse transfers into our "culture"

[4]
Dec 17, 2021, 8:30 AM

The current transfer system was established to give our young student athletes a chance to go where they can play more. That seems like a positive thing. Competitors want to play. If things don't work out at their first school, I see looking for a better situation as the American way. If one is not satisfied with their job, they would be foolish not to look for a better one.

Now the NIL corrodes and corrupts this process and that is a whole other kettle of fish. Players have a right to earn money from their labors (especially in a $$ rich sport like college football), but the way NIL is working out is going to put rich alumni (& gamblers ?) into the position of buying players. This is why athletes making side money was stopped in the first place.

However, I think there are plenty of players who are looking for the better playing situation - and not the cash. This OL from Virginia seems to fit into this category. Surely we could find more guys like this who could help our team and buy into our Clemson culture.

Let's take advantage of the portal in a positive and Clemson way - to the benefit of the kids and the team.

They are trying to now

It's not like everyone in the portal are bad apples

I am sure it's only one item that they evaluate when looking at them. I don't think it's as big a deal as everyone makes it out to be.

You need to record Packer & Durham's replay @ 10AM. Packer and Tom Luginbill explained it.

We can definitely find good players that we would be proud of in the portal. The problem is that Dabo waited so long its like trying to find 10 great players on the signing day. All the good ones have committed for months. You are looking at 2-3 star players who would be emergency depth and would otherwise not play.

And I see no reason not to allow a one time transfer for the very reasons you cited. Sometimes situations don’t pan out like you though or hoped they would.

However, there needs to be some level of control over the situation so it isn’t such an open ended thing. Keep in mind, these players give up their scholly when they enter the portal and many won’t be offered a second chance by another school. There is no guarantee. Schools are not charities.

Sure some players are well known enough and have the football skills and abilities a program may need or want, but do they have the academic and attitude skills that you want at your university and in your locker room?

The portal is not a guarantee of getting something as good or better than what you already have. In many cases it is worse.

The players should be informed of this reality BEFORE they jump to the portal.

I think Dabo is 100% correct on the portal. It has created a mess of things for all involved. Only a few have benefitted. Many have not. Clemson should use it, but it should be very rare and the player has to be a good fit for Clemson.

Sorry, but not sorry. Clemson is picky as we should be.

Exactly. All we seem to hear about are the big names who have entered the portal. No discusses the players who enter are left behind.

Many want to play more but instead of working to earn PT they simply hit the portal to find greener pastures. A fair amount are not being picked up and others are not finding the PT at the new location either so they drop out. The result is a lot of guys are missing out on a college education plus they are being taught to look for an easy path instead of hunkering down to earn the spot.

The other point is we can immerse transfers into our culture but finding the right guys is difficult.

1) the guy has to be of high character
2) the guy has to be talented enough to help us
3) the guy has to be willing to compete for PT

Finding a guy which meets all three is difficult which is why many believe the portal is ok to cherry pick a few guy each year but we need to up the number of recruits we take each year from the HS ranks

Exactly, we just need to up our #s for recruiting. The only problem with that is what if not as many as expected portal out or leave early or whatever, you'd have to take back that scholly... Dabo prides himself on being 100% honest with recruits (and most HS coaches will tell you he is in fact different in that regard). If he offers, the scholarship its yours. The portal makes that difficult to do, and he may just have to be honest in saying "we want you, but if not enough guys leave, we won't have the schollly this year. That's why he says they need to rework the calendar on portal, signing day, etc. Coaches can't predict how many scholarships they'll actually have.

We’ll have no choice to be able to compete and continue at a high level. We’ll continue to lose players to the portal and must use it to compensate for those loses.
Depth was an issue this year. Someone posted a question earlier if we’d even have enough players for our bowl game (injuries, transfers, etc).
Though no one “likes it” but .. we have to either have to adapt to the changing CFB landscape or be left behind. If 3rd or 4th place in the ACC is acceptable, then leave things as they are currently.

You can't go get portal players mid year. If you have 85 scholarship players at the beginning of the year, that's who you play with. The portal doesn't help when you're hit with a rash of injuries.

Who said we can't? I've listened to Dabo's comments the past few months. Everytime I have hear him speak he has never said Clemson would never use the portal. He has said just the opposite. (No matter how folks try to twist his words.)

He has not explicitly said it, but he has come close. ("We evaluate the portal every single day.") I infer from the totality of his statements, he and his staff are contacting people in the portal today and, as part of the evaluation of the players - but not the only part, they are looking at how this person would fit into the "Clemson Culture." Same process as they use for HS kids they are recruiting.

We will have to actively recruit players from other teams to get the best players. The top players in the portal know where they are headed before they ever enter the portal.
