Why are businesses having a hard time staffing?

Apr 21, 2021, 12:33 PM

It's an interesting question. We have some business owners here. What have you seen as to why people are not going back to work?

Is it the higher unemployment check?

COVID fears?

Used the year off to gain a better education and therefore better employment?

Seems to me most of the staffing issues are at blue-collar or MW jobs

Are boomers not coming back to the workforce?

Lots can make more off unemployment

I know a guy like this right now. His job is job hunting so he can stay on unemployment.

I also think Americans, especially the new workforce generation are inherently lazy and always think they can “do better”, which is fine, but you need to work at something to get better. You are not entitled to $50k a year because you have 200k in debt.

I mean.. if I'm getting paid $400 dollars more a month

Apr 21, 2021, 12:38 PM

sitting home on unemployment than paying gas money, daycare, etc to drive to a job, why would I not take the unemployment?

I'd lose money working.

It's also crazy to me there there are jobs out there for grown men and women that pay less than $400 over unemployment

And at the time it was necessary.

Apr 21, 2021, 12:44 PM

I'm not so sure the extra is worth it now. Once we reach an overall majority of americans being vaxed. Take the extra 400 out and let's get back to normal

Unless they are using it as leverage to force an arbitrary increase in MW.

Yeah. that's pretty nice to me.

Maybe when the kids are older and out of the house I may try to climb that ladder again. But I rather be a part of my kids lives growing up than a few extra thousand a year.

(I am not saying anybody on here is giving up their kids for their job)

I want better for my kids than myself. I will send them to Camp Seagull/Seafarer, private school and private college and I will take them on European trips and I will see this world with them. I have seen the world. Dude there isn’t a price you could put for doing some of the things I have done due to work. It’s amazing the opportunities if you work and let them happen.

There is so much more than Gatlinburg, Myrtle Beach and Orlando.

the grandparents and parents we grew up with who worked hard to make ends meet is not the worker of today. Back then you could buy a house for a few thousand dollars.

Today the worker knows that the boss is in it for himself and to gain every dollar he can while being more than willing to screw over his staff. T3, Neil, and Bengaline come in here complaining that the workers are doing the same.

or billionaire owners. If I do my job and I keep progressing and I keep pushing it will happen and it has for me.

I worked my #### off for a guy who paid me pennies, but that set my work ethic up, just like growing up on a farm to want more and push myself. I literally couldn’t care less how much anyone above me makes cause that has nothing to do with me. I am me and only I can change my outcome.

Re: Why are businesses having a hard time staffing?

Apr 21, 2021, 12:50 PM

I see a combination of those depending on the line of work you're in.

-based on conversations with people in the restaurant business they're STRUGGLING to find help mainly due to increased unemployment check.

-a lot that were thinking about or nearing retirement within the next 1-3 years have gone ahead and called it quits probably b/c of COVID, which naturally leaves "unexpected" vacancies.

-If you're capable of working remotely you're likely still employed/able to work, assuming your line of work hasn't been flipped upside down by COVID.

Long term I see this "shortage" accelerating the "automated world" with companies getting creative to use less "people labor" and more AI type labor.......basically a more advanced "self checkout" mentality that grocery stores use. Do the same/more amount of work with less payroll..........I may be wrong, but I can see that happening.

flag link military_tech thumb_downthumb_up

AI isn't nearly advanced enough to start putting anyone out

Apr 21, 2021, 12:56 PM

of a job yet. Kinda like self driving cars..we're a long way off in that regard.

badge-donor-05yr.jpg flag link military_tech thumb_downthumb_up

completely agree, but long term i can see it accelerating...

Apr 21, 2021, 1:00 PM

the "work from home/remotely" COVID world opened A LOT of eyes from companies. Enough to cut the building lease and go complete remote working without having to "keep the lights on" at the office.

When companies get desperate enough the creativity increases.......short term it may not be AI, but more of a "dumbed down" version of getting work done with less manual labor.

flag link military_tech thumb_downthumb_up

That is absolutely a pandora's box that can not be unopened

Apr 21, 2021, 1:02 PM

And something that I believe businesses will push as a bonus to entice workers to them.

We are seeing it now with education. Even though most schools are back full time face to face, we still have to provide the online "option" because we provided it last year. Can't take those options away from students now.

2024 white level memberbadge-donor-05yr.jpg flag link military_tech thumb_downthumb_up

I like your funny words magic man

I don't think it was creativity that forced companies to

Apr 21, 2021, 1:29 PM [ in reply to completely agree, but long term i can see it accelerating... ]

send people to work from home. The capabilities to do that from last year were the same for at least the last 10; maybe longer. Most companies didn't trust their employees to work from home; THAT is what stopped then from doing it, still..a lot of people aren't good at it. Some jobs simply don't work that way.

badge-donor-05yr.jpg flag link military_tech thumb_downthumb_up

UE benefits are too rich.

Apr 21, 2021, 1:29 PM

There are 15 Million unfilled jobs right now. Employed + Openings is larger than it was pre-COVID. Yet here we are talking of more handouts for individuals in the "Infrastructure" bill. Georgia recently had over 300,000 jobs posted on the Dept. of Labor website. That was a record.

The local paper said benefits in GA are worth around $17-$22 per hour. The found that most people wouldn't go back to work unless the pay was over $25/hour.

Until Congress decides to stop giving out handouts, this will continue. We're becoming the Socialist States of America.

flag link military_tech thumb_downthumb_up

Biggest issue is the high unemployment payments...

Apr 21, 2021, 1:36 PM

paired with little-to-no requirement to prove one is looking for work.

We pay more than what unemployment pays and when you add in benefits, a good bit more, but we are having a lot of trouble finding people that want to work. There are a lot of people happy to sit on their butts at home and get paid for it.

It is a case study in why solutions like this ought not to occur at the federal level. Some states are shut-down and the workers truly need support...other states are wide open and can't find workers to fill positions which is having big economic impacts.

Tacked on top of that is the recent stimulus payments...just makes it worse.

badge-donor-05yr.jpg flag link military_tech thumb_downthumb_up

Re: Why are businesses having a hard time staffing?

Apr 21, 2021, 1:42 PM

It 100% has to do with Covid relief and unemployment benefits. It is affecting low paying jobs. Why go back to work when you can make more in unemployment. It really is as simple as that. If I could make more sitting at home than working, I would sit at home.

2024 purple level member flag link military_tech thumb_downthumb_up

Apr 21, 2021, 3:16 PM

it's a combination of the big boys in town (think smiley box) paying a premium and being able to attract everyone. Then, what's left usually doesn't pan out or they're on unemployment.

Seems like the hardest labor to find for my customers is that 16-25 $/hr assembly, floor, picker, fork truck driver type of worker.

Then on the tech side (maintenance) wages are going through the roof because there simply aren't enough people trained on the new technologies yet.

Corporate wise tho - doesn't seem to be an issue. Most of my interactions in the industry are with firms that are going gang busters and have plenty of engineers, analysts, etc. trying to solve the issue of no bodies available to row the boat.

Hopefully we can automate all this #### before we call in immigrants :)

I personally see the boomer / aging out issue affecting the trades type of jobs and corporate level jobs moreso than the line worker jobs. Most folks working on the floor in my interactions are millenials or gen x. The maintenance guys, plant managers, etc. typically have more boomers.
