Not in the context of female student athletes. Here is a good article which explains it. A simpler explanation might be that fans dont need to call football players gentlemen so using the Ladies devalues women as a one off with the mens sports being the norm. I would also point out once again if it is ok why does the team go out of its way not to use in any of their releases (or anywhere else for that matter).

Happens very often in our office and not one single lady is offended. We have 27k+ employees worldwide and have to watch all these stupid videos on race, religion, sex, etc. and none of them mention this stupidity you speak of.
Heck I report to the VP and I hear him often tell our female employees good morning ladies or have a good weekend ladies. You're just an idiot.

By then, if the world still exists, maybe person as there will be no identity between male or female. Almost to that point now.
I always greeted my female employees everyday with good morning ladies or when they were leaving for the day or weekend as have a good evening or weekend ladies. What is the problem with that term? Today people get worked up over nothing. Glad I don’t have to put up with that bs anymore.
