NO BUYOUT IF HE LEFT FOR A HEAD COACHING JOB? What difference does that make to us whether he's leaving for another head coaching job or to become the manager at Publix in Athens, GA? In any event we get poached and he gets to break his deal with no compensation toward Clemson while he is secure with a multi-year deal?

Seriously? That is just plain dumb and insane. That's a pee poor manager whoever did that.
Guess we're not only lil ole Clemson, we're also good ole Clemson... Willing to help other teams. College football is a business, not a playground.

I can't imagine any coordinator that aspires to be a head coach would sign a contract that bans them from fulfilling their dreams. Venables was a great DC for us, and now has a great opportunity to become a great Head Coach at Oklahoma. That's what success allows you to do, move up to bigger and better opportunities. Good for him and Clemson that this has occurred!

When was that contract negotiated? If that clause had been in there we might have lost him then. Be thankful for the time we had.

Exactly. That’s probably what it took to keep him at the time.

I’m just guessing the buyout to steal him away for another DC job was huge.
We just weren’t going to block him from a head coaching opportunity. I’d say he earned that contract.
