My first semester at CU after transferring from College of Chas. Didn't think we could hang with the Irish, but we did and it changed my perception of what Clemson football could be...

I was in the new South Upper Deck. Still the loudest crowd I remember - beginning to end - in Death Valley.
I hope we can bring the noise again but have better game results.

The refs should have flagged the ND coach for the middle finger at the crowd. That fired up the ND team but should have fired up us even more.

doesn't fumble around the ND 7 just before the 1st half ended we would probably been up 24 to 7 instead of 17 to 7 and probably won the game. Montana was unreal the 2nd half.

end up doing his magic - he was not an all-American for nothing. Our guys on both sides were so much smaller. Golic and the Browner Bros. were just tearing our small o-line up in fourth quarter. I thought, considering the size difference and their all-americans on both o and d, the Tigers outplayed them for 3 quarters - just got worn out!

I was sitting in the student section; didn't sit down the entire game. I vividly remember the midnight prep rally the night before in the amphitheatre. I'll be there Saturday with my family. Go Tigers!

@ Little John later that night ! Was 12 and blown away by the whole experience ! The Valley was rocking ! Remember Dan Devine walking out on the field and picking up a flag and getting booed ! It was so rowdy the Doobie Brothers commented about how loud the Valley was at the concert that night ! I also remember the PA guy mentioning the Doobies were in attendance and the crowd going wild

I was at the game in 1977 and also went to ND for the win. Wore my orange coveralls and had ND fans asking to purchase them after the game was over? Not sure why? Very hospitable and one of the better away games that I have attended. Flew my 172 Cessna to the game into a head wind and took two days to travel. Spent the first night in Lexington Ky. Had a good tail wind on the trip home and made it back in about eight hours.

We sat in temporary bleachers under the oak tree that is scheduled to be cut down. Took my mom, dad, wife and 4yo daughter. Very cold. Our daughter kept my mom busy going to the concession stand and then the restroom. Thought we had'em beat until Dan Devine intimidated the refs in the 3qtr. We never got a call our way afterwards.

I was sitting in the South Stands at about the 35 yd line. I was 16 and just yelled my head off. I remember how much of a tool Dan Devine was and that started my hatred of all things Notre Dame then I watched Rudy and had some good feelings and then Lou sealed the deal, I have hated them since!

One thing to note is this very game put Clemson on the national map for good. Steve Fuller led the Tigers the following year to 11-1 and the infamous Woody Hayes bowl game win...the Danny Ford era began...beat ND at their house in 79 then took the NC in 81.
Clemson has never been the same since the ND '77 game.

Yes - fourth year of college - girlfriend who is now my wife of 36 years sitting next to me - she came to game but stayed in my room. I had to go to game. ND coach complained that noise at stadium was unsportsmanlike - So the whole stadium only went Shhhh until the snap.

It was my senior year. I was over the sale of all "Original Tiger Rag"s in the stadium and in town. Our fraternity handled it for the Block C club. I took all the Tiger Rags in in one large box to distribute bundles to the guys who sold them at the gates. Nearly all the bundles had a bottle inside so getting our refreshments in the stadium went real easy.
Remember Dan Divine picking up the flag and holding it in the ref's face without recourse. And, as someone else posted, Montana was spot on in the second half. I believe we were the only team to score a rushing TD on them that year, or maybe it was to that point in the season. Great game.

I was in my new seats the year after I graduated and I still sit in those north stand seats watching the Clemson coaches and the Tigers. It was some great football except for Montana's passing in the second half. Beat them to death xcept final score. Great comeback by them. We won't allow that this time.

Sorry if I missed the reference I'm about to mention. I've seen several people refer to the "Shhh!" But before the game there was a stadium-wide silent treatment. The band "played" a silent pre-game, marching in formation but, instruments raised - no sound. The cloud even "mock clapped." Classic.

I was in North stands and remember Devine and players flashing number one sign as they left field. Guess they didn't appreciate our hospitality.

Sealed the deal for me. My Pop, a lifelong Domer, too me and I became a Tiger fan for life. Sat on the Hill and remember the JD bottles being passed around and the ear splitting crowd.

Sat in South stands, down low. Close enough to heckle Joe Montana.

Two legends were born that day...

1. Joe Montana. It was the first of his many fabled fourth-quarter comebacks. And after he did so in Death Valley, there was no stopping him anywhere else.
2. The roar of the Valley went nationwide that day. By now, no doubt, y'all have seen the "TV vs. real life" youtube of the 2005 Miami game. https://youtu.be/XaJwiOjt9fE
That was how much of the day was in the Valley. Clemson has been known as a fearsome place by other folks in the South, but no one outside of our region had heard the wall of liquid #### our fans could unleash ... especially on folks that had publicly challenged them, like Dan Devine and Bill Dooley.
No one ... NO ONE ... left the valley with more than shreds of their voice. Students, alum even fatcat IPTAY joined in a game-long chorus of noise. It would be nice to see that sort of unity unleashed on the BB Heads and their freshman QB once again.

By the end of the first quarter I was already hoarse. Standing in the corner of the West End Zone, I said to a friend next to me, "What I wouldn't give for a liquor drink." The guy on my other side opened his jacket that had mini bottles sewn in and said,"You get the mixers." Saved my voice!!
First time C-L-E-M-S-O-N was done around the stadium. At least it was the first time I remember it.
I believe Tracy Perry had the fumble in '77 and Billy Lott QB'd in '79 and scored on a long run.

Was there. The last game in death valley with no upper decks. Made the return trip in '79 and watched Lott and company get a win. Lost in columbia the next week 13-9. Last minute drive ends on an incompletion in the end zone. Then lost to Mike Singletary and Baylor in the peach bowl. The Tiger also got mauled by the live bear mascot on the sideline.
