Who saw Secretariat ?

One of the greatest athletic performances of our lives .
Anybody think that a racehorse shouldn't be called an athlete?

What an inspiring piece .

I did - watched all three Triple Crown races in 1973........

Feb 16, 2018, 9:09 PM

saw him in June of 1973 win the Belmont Stakes by a mile over the rest of the field to win the Triple Crown.

He set the speed/time records in 1973 for all three Triple Crown races and those records all still stand today.

He was unbelievable.

Agree .
I was 4 years old in 1973 so if I watched it I can't remember , though my mom was a horse admirer so something tells me I was there in front of our television half watching history and half concentrating on a pile of Legos.

Don’t lie Dug, you had no interest in those legos and you were eating bugs and toe nail clippings you found on the floor. We all did it.

Most likely, but that's part of my very fabric now ...so I am proud of that humble beginning .

Greatest athlete of the 20th Century

Feb 16, 2018, 9:17 PM

I used to live in Lexington and got to see him in retirement. I was in awe when I stood in front of him. Incredible animal and amazing presence.

I'm sure . They talk about how much more of an impressive figure he cut than his competitors .

Have to agree with you tdug.

Feb 16, 2018, 9:27 PM

Secretariat was one of the finest race horses ever. A special note on that horse... Secretariat was born with an enlarged heart, lungs, and produced more muscle burning energy than any horse that has been documented. That gave an amazing edge to competition and made for beautiful sprints.

Thank you for reminding me.

So he was working off a 4 barrel carburetor when his competitors only had the 2 ?

That is an interesting add on . Did you know him DSP ?

Oh no, Mr. Chenery died long before my time at W & L.

Feb 16, 2018, 11:53 PM

He was Class of 1909-10? He served in WWI, so @hartins® might have pressed the flesh with Chris? ;)

I've been to The Meadow a number of times, beautiful country north of Ashland leading to Fredericksburg and then beyond. There's a number of books about Secretariat's time in Virginia and of course the recent movie. Great story.

Washington & Lee owns the The Meadow's colours/silks worn by Secretariat & jockey along with many other keep safes all under glass in Doremus on campus.

All the best Tg23; enjoy your Friday night.

I ran a business with one of our plants in Paris, Ky.; the home of Clayburn Farms. Toured the farm a few times and saw secretariat's grave. Thanks for sharing.

lifetime record 19-1 the one loss she came from last place to 2nd by a nose in the Breeders cup. The triple crown is nice, but the Breeders cup is a better race than any of the triple crown races. The payout for the Breeder's Cup is the same as all three of the Triple Crown combined.

I remember it like it was yesterday. Such a difficult time in our nation's history. Viet Nam and Watergate were all we heard about. By that time, both were points of shame. Secretariat was the only bright spot. He captivated the imagination of the entire country. I watched every race and was mesmerized by this creature's prowess. He was in a league all by himself. There'll never be another performance as dominating at Secretariat at the Belmont. Thanks for sharing the video. Great way to start the day. Go Tigers!

What I found odd after Secretariat's retirement from everything I've ever read, is that out of I think over 300 colts of his, no male never produce close to anything Secretariat had accomplished. But Secretariat's sire Bold Ruler was a dang good race horse, and he was a Hall of Fame race horse.

Secretariat's major contribution

Feb 17, 2018, 11:22 AM

breeding wise was through his daughters. You will find his name in many, many pedigrees of past and present racing stars, mostly through them. Also, his daughter, Lady's Secret, was Horse of the Year in the late 80's.

Yes, I did read that his Filly offspring had done well, and their offspring had done good in the race horse business.

I saw Secretraiat win The Garden State Stakes a year before he ran away with the Triple Crown. Standing by the rail, he looked like a Maserati next to the other “Cadillac” thoroughbreds.
