Who else thinks the February signing day

is about to become important again? With the portal allowing guys to leave at will, uncertainty of scholarship numbers due to the extra Covid year, no one can really know exactly how many slots they need to fill until December.
Could mean more 3-4 star kids waiting to commit to see if a better offer comes. And if youre honest with that 3 star kid who realistically won't play for 2-3 years, they may be more inclined to stick around and develop in a more traditional manner.

freshmen and develop them. The portal complicates that. He'll use the portal judiciously, but I see them looking at some 3-low 4 star kids who they used to thrive on but have been bypassed simply due to the success in our recruiting.
Maybe that's how you beat this mess. Sell a kid on paying his dues for the opportunity to play at Clemson. We certainly have no lack of this type player to point to as success stories

One benefit of the portal is you can still get a guy that may be only a year removed from high school. Plenty of time for developing.

True, but if they don't play here immediately

do they transfer again? There is no limit on how many times they can transfer.
When we use the portal I see us bringing in one year guys for the most part to fill a need. Exceptions could be guys we recruited out of high school who just didn't fit where they wound up going.
Personally, I like guys willing to pay their dues, and they are becoming fewer and fewer. But just on this years team you had Skalski, Spector, McFadden, Turner, Ruke. Some of our best players, all 3 stars who worked and prospered.

Unless you're a top 50 recruit

or you sign to.play OL at Texas, a big NIL deal is unlikely.
You also aren't getting one at Missouri, or Wake, or Kentucky. You can get one at Clemson if you become a stud. There are some kids still willing to work towards that.
With the NIL, it's going to be interesting to see how they attempt to reign this in. There has to be some limitations put in. It's already as blatant as Barry Switzer's days at Oklahoma or when we offered Herschel a car and Jawja bought them a house ??

I agree with you about paying dues, but i think those type of 3rd year first time starters are going to become increasingly rare. I'm just saying the younger type of portal guys may be what Dabo focuses on. But Who knows....i'm just guessing.

but didn't have room for currently committed to the coots, or Kentucky, or Wake, or whoever wouldn't jump at a Clemson offer?
It just happened with Williams at Dutch Fork. He didn't commit and got the offer he wanted

I certainly wouldn’t want Dabo to change his ethics. But I was thinking the same. We’ve hit on some 3 and 4 star talent and whiffed on some 5 star talent. Especially if you consider decommitments, transfers. (Too lazy to check whether most of our transfers are 4 or 5 star—likely 4 just given the numbers/statistics. But think point is still relevant)

I completely think this will be the case in a couple of years if not next. Also, with coaching changes etc. kids will wait.

stay uncommitted until rosters shake out in December. The portal has changed everything in regards to December now except for the top tier guys. Even then we've seen what coaching changes can bring

it is sad, I hate the transfer portal. I always liked watching the young guys being coached and getting better each year. Now there is no time to develop players. If they don't get playing time they go somewhere else immediately. Need to limit the transfer to one time and you need to stay at original commitment school for three years. If they tranfer after that allow them two more years to play. Get rid of the NIL, they are getting a free college education, room and board. Allow each school to give each student $600 a week. That way all is even at all schools. Maybe a bonus if your school makes the CFP and leave it at four teams.
