Nancy Pelosi and Taiwan

Jul 27, 2022, 6:54 AM

I don't want to hear about how people dislike her. I get that. The question is, should she take this visit to China? To me it seems reckless and accomplishes nothing.

She should go to North Korea***

They would like that and she would be safe. On the other hand, a visit to Taiwan will ratchet up tensions with China. China is threatening military action over it. What is she hoping to accomplish?

"accomplishes nothing."

how do you know this?

I really don't. What could she possibly accomplish though? Showing support? Maybe showing we don't care what China thinks? It seems there is more downside than upside.

Absolutely.

Jul 27, 2022, 7:19 AM

And it accomplishes much.

What does it accomplish? I hope it would, but what's the angle?

Taiwan found Obama's original birth certificate?

Recognizing a free and independent Taiwan is a good thing.

Jul 27, 2022, 7:59 AM [ in reply to Re: Absolutely. ]

Particularly as China is rattling the saber to see our mettle.

Who are we to back down to the CCP, letting them tell us who and what can go to Taiwan?

I can see that.

flag link military_tech thumb_downthumb_up

Who are we is the unfortunate question

Jul 27, 2022, 8:13 AM [ in reply to Recognizing a free and independent Taiwan is a good thing. ]

At the current moment we're a world power with ambiguous, at best, global policy, weak relations with traditional allies, and a military brain trust that massively effed up a withdrawal from a fairly cooperative enemy territory. I don't want us going to war with China ever, but definitely not under this administration.

Jul 27, 2022, 8:22 AM [ in reply to Recognizing a free and independent Taiwan is a good thing. ]

That's the deal. We have been playing footsie with our one-China policy while maintaining "strategic ambiguity" with Taiwan. How can there be one-China and a truly free and independent Taiwan, although Taiwan is essentially free until China decides to enforce a one-China policy?

Pelosi has more balls than Biden, but since the Administration is against her going at this time, it would seem the Speaker of the House and the President should have gotten on the same page privately before going separate ways publicly on a volatile issue.

Joe's already muddied the waters back in May when he said we would get involved militarily if China attacked Taiwan. Biden, "Yes... That's the commitment we made." Not true. That was unambiguous on Biden's part, until a lame attempt was made later to explain what Biden really meant.

Now that Pelosi has publicly made her intentions known, she will need to go, otherwise Biden is projected for what he is--weak. Pelosi and the representatives tagging along on the trip should now go, but keep the trip low key.

This is an unforced error.

Yea she should go. Her husband is going to meet with a couple of chip maker CEOs. The Pelosi golden parachute is very important to America.

military_donation.jpg flag link military_tech thumb_downthumb_up

Feels like she’s playing a bluff that will

Jul 27, 2022, 7:50 AM

Be incredibly easy for China to call, and if they do, our position is markedly worse.

Here's my conflicting take....

Jul 27, 2022, 8:03 AM

The first part of my take is: The Chinese Communists can go f**k themselves if they think they can influence or dictate the "where" and "who" any American, much less a US elected Representative, decides to travel and meet with outside of mainland Chinese borders. Everyone in the USA should be telling China to get bent over their threats against Nancy Pelosi's trip to Taiwan. If someone in our Government wants to travel to Taiwan and meet with the Taiwanese Government then we will do so freely and without permission or conditions from the CCP. The CCP has absolutely NO SAY in the matter....

The second part of my take is: Nancy Pelosi is not a diplomat - she is legislator so unless she is going to Taiwan to gather information in the pursuit of current/future legislation I see no reason for her to make an official visit to Taiwan.

2024 orange level memberbadge-donor-10yr.jpgmilitary_donation.jpg flag link military_tech thumb_downthumb_up

Is she going to get Taiwanese insider trading tips ?

Jul 27, 2022, 8:09 AM

If so, then no ... her husband guesses right 100% of the time on stocks ...

so the trip would leave a wasteful carbon footprint in the atmosphere the size of Utah.

If history holds, she goes and returns, China does nothing, and we all forget about it.
