Congrats to the True Clemson Fans!

Oct 21, 2013, 12:21 PM

I feel really bad about Saturday night. Not only did the Clemson players have a terrible night that snowballed downhill from first touch, but to put salt in the wounds, people who claimed to be Clemson fans ABANDONED, their men in orange. By half time the drunks were heading toward the exits for another drink and by the beginning of the 4th quarter more than half the stadium was empty. At game's end it was disheartening at the few people left. College football is big money--something is wrong with all of the hype. Attendees who pay big money expect to win, almost feeling entitled--and when their team loses they revolt. The men who lost that game on Saturday night are college athletes. No one of you feel worse than they do. Yep, they got their butts whipped. But, they worked hard and deserve better from people who claim to be fans. I personally feel very proud. With two minutes left in the game, few real fans left, I looked across the stadium and was able to pick out my twin boys who are Clemson sophs--still there. As we scored a touchdown with a minute to go, they were jumping up and down with a few of their friends. They stayed till the end--supporting their fellow Clemson student athletes. My boys know well what it feels like to have no fan support, for they are soccer players. They learned the importance of what fan support means because they felt hundreds of times what it's like when there is none--win or lose. Clemson football dropped two on Saturday night. First the game to a very good Florida State football team, and then secondly, a drubbing on national tv as fans demonstrated a lack of human respect for their own college athletes as demonstrated by the wordless scolding as they lashed Clemson athletes by abandoning them in time of need. I for one can tell you all that nothing is worse when you play college ball than your own fans abandoning you. I am qualified to take this position because It happened to me. I wonder how many of the naysayers posting these blogs can say the same?

I stayed, not by choice b/c my ride stays regardless..............if it was up to me i woulda left in the 3rd quarter and he's no bigger of a fan than i am.

we, THE FANS show up and do our part through the 1st half, but on the FIRST play the game was FSU's to lose..........it was an absolute humiliation at home in our "biggest" game in death valley history.

fans had the right to leave b/c our coaches/players put a #### poor product on the field.......those who stayed great, those who left fine..........doesn't make either fan greater/lesser of a fan.

Oct 21, 2013, 12:41 PM

True fans, just like true friends don't jump ship when the going gets tough. I am speaking of all of the people who didn't have a good excuse like young children and older folks. As a whole, FSU fans did outnumber TRUE Clemson fans at the end. And ABC was quick to acknowledge it too. Dabo craftfully thanked "the students who stayed until the end". He couldn't say anything about the non-student fans. There weren't enough there. Sad.

I had to finish a last minute project for a client on Saturday morning, so couldn't make it to the stadium.

I had to cut it off after the 3rd quarter. I have no idea how anyone stayed in the stadium for that. The player can't reasonably expect the facts to be there until the end when they give up midway through the 3rd.

If you think you're a better fan for subjecting yourself to that mess, your concept of reality is nil.

completely. All schools have very few "true" fans by your definition...I can promise you had it been Clemson at FSU and we where putting that kind of whipping on FSU the stands would have been void of Semihole fans.

Had I gone I probably would have stayed the whole game because we don't get up to Clemson as often as we want...but that doesn't make me any more of a fan than someone who is at every game but decided to leave after the game had been decided.

I bet our athletes/coaches are a little more pi$$ed off at themselves than the fact the fans left early.

I couldn't agree more. I went to Florida for the Orange Bowl with my 11 year-old son and we sat through every last second of the game. It was important for me to show him that you support the team win or lose. There weren't many of us left then either.

My heart goes out to the players and coaches who have given us so much to cheer about this year and must be feeling incredibly low right now. Maybe it's the mother in me, but I am so proud of this team and Coach Swinney regardless of the score of that one game.

flag link military_tech thumb_downthumb_up

Congrats on being a "TRUE" fan...

Oct 21, 2013, 1:21 PM

This past Saturday was a prime opportunity for you to provide evidence in proving your Clemson football superiority over the vast majority. You'll be able to tell the story of how you stayed til the end of the 2013 FSU debacle bc your such a bigger fan than those that left.

Maybe you are a bigger fan than me, how don't even know how you go about judging that but I'll concede since your pride is on the line.

I left right before halftime bc we were parked right next to the stadium and I wanted a snack, a quick drink and needed to discuss what the heck just happened with my group. I had full intentions of going back until FSU scored right after the half.

As much as people pay to come to games (in time and money) they can do what they want when the game gets that bad and its 10-11p. I usually stay near the very end, but Saturday night was just too much for me.

I'd like to think Im still a big Clemson fan, but now im being told otherwise. Where do I now stand in my fandom? How much orange clothing can I now wear? Can I still go to games? What do I need to do to redeem myself to true fanhood? Is it even still possible for me to be a true fan?

I know this is a smart aleck post and I meant for it to be. Reading crap like this gets old. Biggest regular season game in a long, long time and we got the ever living snot beat out of us right out of the gate. Some saw it was 10:30-11p and decided to go home. Nothing wrong with that considering the score.

flag link military_tech thumb_downthumb_up

Re: Congrats on being a "TRUE" fan...

Oct 21, 2013, 1:31 PM

Yep--big money spent and your time--so you expect a win. Sure, you can leave whenever you want. You didn't get your money's worth. YOU ARE MISSING THE POINT! These guys are not pros. THey work hard. They are students. They need your support. As a WHOLE GROUP, clemson fans (or those who think they are) bailed on these guys. They bailed because they were losing. Very sad and not helpful to those players who gave it all. Too bad it wasn't enough for you. Guess you don't have any kids in sports either. If the score was reversed, I would bet big money (so you will understand) that the stands would have been full right until the end.

military_donation.jpg flag link military_tech thumb_downthumb_up

Re: Congrats on being a "TRUE" fan...

Oct 21, 2013, 1:51 PM

I don't have kids in sports so I cannot empathize with those parents who kids play on the team. I would expect them to stay as its a different set of circumstances.

I support the Tigers and know they work hard, but it would be out of line to say they gave it their all....thats a load of bull. Maximum effort was not given by all those who particpated. It may have started that way, but certainly didn't stay that way as the game continued. Chass Morris agrees.

I was at the UK-Alabama game the week before and it was essentially the same stinking game on replay for me. Thats kinda sad when you think about it.

You cant blame folks for leaving.

flag link military_tech thumb_downthumb_up

I stay and watch a beatdown for 2 reasons

Oct 21, 2013, 1:40 PM

1) My team is delivering the beat down.
2) My kid plays on the team and I want to encourage him and console him after the game.

Watching that was pure agony. Why would anyone inflict that on themselves if they didn't have to? To say they're a true fan? Well, congratulations if that makes you feel better.

I saw coaches and a team that gave up. I don't think it started that way but the minute Dabo didn't kick the field goal I knew the outcome - he had given up. I'm still angry at my team and my players for giving up. I don't care so much that they lost but that they gave up. And I'm supposed to stay and watch to prove I'm a "real fan"?

My gosh this topic is getting old.....

Oct 21, 2013, 1:43 PM

....of greater relevance - and this has been stated previously over and over on this board since Saturday night - was the number of Seminole fans present in Death Valley for the game.

That made it hard for many (myself included) to hang around when surrounded by so many opposing fans. In my section, it almost felt like an away game in the 3rd quarter.

That, combined with the thought of a 3-hour drive home, did it for me.

Regardless sir, you are entitled to your opinion, but you are no greater of a Clemson Tiger fan than me.

I guess only those who played college football and suffered a big loss like this or those who have sons that play college football and suffered a loss like this will truly understand. Once again, it matters how the fans react to these types of games. I am telling you from personal experience--the stands emptying at half time and continuing to empty until no one is left in the beginning of the fourth quarter is highly detrimental to those guys on the field moving forward. You don't have to believe me, but I know it to be true. Nothing hurts worse than people kicking you when you are down--especially when those same people are supposed to be lifting you up. PLEASE!!! It's ridiculous to tell folks they are not true fans. Anyone who bought tickets (for a lot or a little), made the trip (short or long), and took the time to put their butts in the seats, even if only for a little while, IS a true fan. Don't be high and mighty because you suffered to the end. Martyrdom is not required to be a true fan.

Folks leave early when we're up by 30 in the 3rd quarter too, and they don't get bashed for it.

FYI - I stayed til the bitter end and took my son on the field after the game. He got a picture with Beasley and was beside himself with joy after that, despite the loss. But I didn't blame one single person for wanting to leave early.

Players are affected moving forward when they are losing and the stadium clears. Enough said. Anything more than that and I don't think you can truely comprehend. Ask any college athlete how they feel when fans abandon them. Of course it's not as meaningful whenyou are winning, but every college athlete would love to see a whole stadium, or half, or quarter of a stadium. Dummy up buddy.

I don't doubt that the players are affected when the stands clear out. They are also affected by poor coaching, poor execution, and getting their butts handed to them. If you honestly believe that a full stadium to the end would have made that loss any easier on the team, then you should question your own comprehension.

Hats off to you mister TRUE fan. You should have your face plastered on the side of a mountain. Carry on, and enjoy your trip to Maryland next weekend.

But please consider, the fans showed up and most of the team didn't. The atmosphere was vastly superior to the team's readiness for that game. By the end, they were about equal.

CSO---we've been on here a long time

Oct 21, 2013, 3:10 PM

and I nearly always agree with you. This time especially. For years, I was one of those folks who stayed until "all zeros". But common sense also has to be involved. The vast majority of folks at the game had a long way to travel AFTER the game and many had children with them, long waits in traffic, and there was no question about the outcome.

I'll be glad to entertain a discussion with anyone about my lifetime support of Clemson University--especially athletics. That support will not wane because of the FlaSt game although I was cussin' and spittin' for a while.

Far as I'm concerned, even though we're probably not going to win our division and as such the conference title, but we still have a giant hurdle to over come. Hope we have nothin' but marks in the left column through the end of bowl season.

Kiss my ### dude

I pay for my season tickets, I had been out there since 8 am, hardly slept the night before I was so excited, and to see that was truly disheartening, I left when we went down 37-7 not to beat traffic but to just go back to the tailgate, I couldn't watch what I was seeing, and before you give your whole piece on Ive bet you have never played football or college football wrong and I was involved in a game against a local powerhouse that pretty much had the same outcome and was hyped up for weeks, we were both 7-0 on our way to both being #1 seeds in playoffs and wound up getting beat 57-17(pretty sure that was the score) so the same fans that were telling us how great we were, were also the ones walking out at halftime. But guess what I didn't care that was the last thing on my mind in the locker room, only thing on my mind was how poor we executed our game plans. So quit acting like your such a great fan for sitting through that game, I guess I just value my time more than you.

You having played school football and people leaving the game have no correlation to each other. My beef with people leaving early is the message it sends to the rest of the college football world. I have sat through some real butt kicking before and have stayed for it because I liked to watch them play, even though they didn't know how to play. People have a right to leave if they want to no matter what the score or the reason, I understand that. I am saying when the game is on national tv it makes us all look sort of petty. That's my opinion of it, at least.

Re: Congrats to the True Clemson Fans!

Oct 21, 2013, 3:30 PM

I have been going to Clemson games since the 1957 Orange Bowl. I have never, to my recollection, left a game before it was over, unless it was down to a couple of minutes and it was out of hand one way or the other and that was because I was riding with my daddy and we were probably headed back to watch SC play that night on our way to MB. I understand what you are saying perfectly well and agree with you 100%. The fans leaving early is unacceptable and it is what the Gamecocks use to do all the time. We are acting like the Gamecocks and I hope you people know that. Please don't leave early. It reflects very badly on Clemson and it's fans. And that is what we are know by throughout the country...our fans and the way they support the team no matter what. We lost. Does that mean you don't love the Tigers anymore?

Of course I was pi$$ed off and disappointed. Who wasn't?

Stand behind them if you're a true fan.

True Fans????

Oct 21, 2013, 7:04 PM

If we only have 8000 "true" fans we are in bad shape. What gives someone the right to pass judgement on another for leaving the game. I left halfway through the 4th... I had seen enough that particular evening. I'm no less of a tiger today because of that

Oct 22, 2013, 7:58 AM [ in reply to True Fans???? ]

Speaking as a whole, Not judging individuals. Leave when you want to leave. Just saying when the stadium emties way, way early it looks bad on the "fans" for not supporting the team and the university. If you can't understand that, sorry.

Oct 21, 2013, 7:44 PM

I wasn't trying to compare a high school game to that, I was just saying when he acts like he is the only clemson fan whoever has played football is stupid...when you get a beat down the last thing on your mind or your coaches is "oh the fans gave up on us...wahhh" no it's you looking around like what the hell happened

Oct 21, 2013, 8:47 PM

Is a better fan than me because she stayed the entire game? My blood is orange, I am a woman and I know more about my Clemson teams than a lot of men, I sat through the entire Gator Bowl massacre vs Syracuse...but, my friend who couldn't name five CU players past or present, is a true fan because she stayed the whole time?. Give me a break!

Although I agree with you clemsondad1, I do usually stay to the end and go to some away games as well. I will say though that this is not something that happens very often. I expect it had to do with trying to get home before 4 am since most people travel and bring kids. In reality we are very good supporters of our team. I am sure the players are disappointed in the fans leaving however the egg we laid and the way we played was as disappointing as I have ever seen except orange bowl which I also attended. I don't see an all in attitude by this team. I don't see fire, attitude, or leadership. I will continue to drive ten hours there and back to games after working my tail off all week and will generally stay the whole game. But my leaving in the third quarter to go clean up my tailgate and pack up the car doesn't make me less of a fan. It was just too much I bailed. Still love the tigers. Wear orange everyday and pay tuition for two of our kids that are there. It was just a huge letdown Clemson dad. Both fans and team need to learn from this peace

the fans. The biggest game in the history of Death Valley and we looked like crap. Every fan has his/her own definition of a "true fan" and you are welcome to yours but that was one ugly effort on our part but what is yet to be seen is just how good FSU really is! Recall when we lost to Bama on national television in the Georgia Dome only to realize later it was the start of what has been an incredible run by the Crimson Tide!

To some of you who agree with my meaning--thanks!

Oct 22, 2013, 7:47 AM

Lot of people not reading the whole statement and understanding. Also a lot of people making individual excuses for leaving--not looking for that. To those of you who read my post, understood it, and agree that we should do a better job supporting our college athletes and the University--THANKS! Nothing good can come out of an empty stadium in the beginning of the fourth quarter as it relates to the perception we leave to both our players and those watching on tv. We blew it Clemson, we blew it.

Oct 22, 2013, 8:33 AM

Sports competition teaches teamwork, perseverance, discipline — and humility.

But while athletes must take the physical and psychic lumps that come with scoreboard shortfalls, many fans reverse their fields when their favorite teams flop.

If your team wins, you can say, “We won.” If your team loses, you can blame coaches, players, referees, the weather, schedule makers, etc.

Hey, it’s human nature to embrace success as your own and failure as somebody else’s.
