Why are we so thin at QB?

Apr 6, 2021, 3:34 PM

We have DJ, who is a generational talent, but after that we have a significant drop off.

Even when Taisun was healthy, there were concerns about his ability to come in and be counted on if needed.

Now, with Taisun's injury, we have one other QB on the roster and he is not even a scholarship player (although I have been encouraged by what I've seen from him thus far).

The QB we have coming in later this year might not even enroll, due to his baseball talents.

Our coaches obviously anticipated Trevor leaving early for the NFL. And I realize that there were probably promises made to DJ about us not recruiting another QB besides him. But why on earth are we in this position?

Did we miss on some QB prospects we needed to get? Is this just a quirky situation that couldn't have been prevented? I just can't understand how an elite program like ours has two scholarship QBs, one of whom is now out for the season, with no one behind him.

I'm not trying to start a debate about the transfer portal and whether Dabo will change his mind. I would like to understand why we are in this position, that's all. Thanks in advance.

We really weren't. We had TP who had potential and then we have 3 frosh coming in. Not many teams have an all world 2nd stringer unless they are a frosh anyway just waiting their turn.

First of all TP is a MUCH better player than many of you give him credit for being. You saw him at his best in the fourth quarter of the spring game. With TP and DJ both healthy the Tigers would have been better off at QB than practically any other team in division one. The transfer portal and the likeness rule will not be good for the games we live. Amateur sports are a great pastime. I hate to see it disappear.

Going to go out on a limb...I expect most of you to give me a good "Coot" callin'...

BUT=Should we expect recruiting to cover un-planned-for gaps, or should we be better at coaching or developing talent at these positions? Was ETN not a 3-star?

Our safeties have been hurt by CB's (or their coach) in Dime or ISO making names for themselves [Natty '15, 2x Sugarbowls]. There has been a lot of disciplinary issues in that same department.

Our line, is well, stagnate and impotent. We are shuffling deck chairs on the Titanic under Caldwell. We need new results from new vision and new standards. Mike Reed is halfway out the door-his resume reads like a business card.

[Brownell critics please rush to my rescue]

I don't understand how "Best is the Standard" and we can grow and develop players, but not at some key positions.

Sorry gang. Off the soap box, into the showers.

Trevor Lawrence started as a backup in 2018 and won the NC. I’d also say DJU looked good enough last year had he been needed. What I mean is that DJU looked good enough to win a NC with the right pieces around him last year, not that we would’ve won it with him.

Because Brownell can’t recruit? Sorry couldn’t resist JK. Actually, I assume TL16 scared off other HS QBs for a cycle so we got Taisun as a development project and walkons. Brice leaving really hurt, but that would have been more about last season than this year I think.

Having Cooper?, Brice, Johnson, Bryant, and Lawrence on the roster together for a short time was an unusual situation that doesn’t happen very often and probably not again with the new Portal rules.

Re: Why are we so thin at QB?

Apr 6, 2021, 5:37 PM

Sap1 is spot on. Not unusual situation at all if you review our history. When DW4 was here, we had developmental QB with KB 2. In DW4 senior yr, we signed Hunter Johnson, a highly rated 5* that I think everyone expected to take the reigns. That didn't pan out so we had to play kb for a year until Trevor got on campus.

We signed Taisun along with DJU. Taisun actually higher rated than KB. We have a stud QB committed... So it's actually par for the course going back to when DW4 was signed. Throw in Chase and Hunter transfers and here we are. Had either one stayed, we'd have had a quality backup with or without Taisun.

So, bottom line as many others have stated, thanks transfer portal. Only one team that's competed with us on star rating backup qbs, Bama. Hopefully next year with Cade, we'll be back where we need. Let's hope Dabo knows something we don't and that Bubba wants to play football.

Re: Why are we so thin at QB?

Apr 6, 2021, 5:59 PM

Did you actually watch TP in the second half? The dude won the game. That wasn't a bad beat - he was the better QB on the day. He started flat-out miserable in the first half, sure, but that was also at least partly due to some shoddy protection. Once he got dialed in he was slinging that rock around and it really raised my eyebrows. Hit some nice throws of all kinds, showed some arm strength, showed mobility, showed his ability to extend plays with his feet, showed his ability to create and get out of trouble. Dude flashed mad tools and while the injury setback is a bummer I definitely saw a guy with "NFL" in his future, which I definitely wasn't seeing in the first half. That wasn't a mirage; that was real stuff.

Hopefully he comes back healthy and soon, because Phommachanh's got some serious ability, enough that I think he might could actually make it interesting for DJU.

Especially in the era of the Transfer Portal, having two such QB's at that level is not ordinary, particularly after losing a Trevor Lawrence to the NFL. It's just bad luck we lost Phommachanh to an Achilles injury so soon after he starting announcing his talent.

Puts us in a pickle, for sure, and I definitely hope Hunter Helms can get it done as QB2. I have the feeling we're going to find out.

I agree with the hopefully he comes back healthy part but Good grief you say some hilarious stuff. Just because TP made 3 or 4 nice throws in the fourth quarter of a spring football game does not put him on the same planet of DJU. You can’t throw out every other data point from his play, which has been horrendous. So no, he’s not going to challenge DJU for the starting job. That’s just silly. Him being an NFL prospect is just silly.

Re: Why are we so thin at QB?

Apr 7, 2021, 8:58 AM

Sorry, 73% pulse-member-since-2018-likely-SCOK. (I definitely see why your pulse is so low. You come across as more than kind of a tool.)

And speaking of: as a guy who played the game myself and now has a son playing big-boy FBS ball as well, the one thing I can tell you with absolute certainty is: you can't fake physical tools. You've either got 'em or you don't, and you can spot those in about twenty seconds. Phommachanh has 'em, and then some. What Phommachanh was showing was arm strength, mobility, height, agility, and a rather remarkable ability to improv and get out of trouble. Once he started firing the ball in there and getting some confidence you could see the arm talent. He put the ball on his receivers in a hurry, almost as fast as DJ did. And DJU puts the ball on his receivers fast. But Phommachanh does not have a noodle arm himself...it certainly appeared stronger than, say, Kelly Bryant's was; I never did see Bryant quite zip it in there like that, particularly across the middle. Bryant always seemed tentative and avoided throws across the middle, in fact, and I suspect a big reason was, he never did really trust his arm. All of those attributes definitely appeared to be NFL level with Phommachanh. You don't unsee that once you see it. I'll bet your right now: barring further injury in college, I think Phommachanh plays in the League.

Again, I used that word "might" challenge DJU because the dreadful beginning was a concern, but he was getting hit and harassed almost every play initially; his protection early was awful. And the way DJU closed the game was a concern to me. He did absolutely nothing after starting hot. But again, why? Look at the tape - protection. DJU himself was getting hit and harassed every play late.

And yes, one outing, one set of data points, but the dude showed the ability to do some stuff, and he's definitely progressed a mile since this time last year.

Again, just one guy's reasonably informed opinion. But if playing the game myself and getting my own kid to FBS football isn't informed enough for you, by all means, proceed along to those more-informed experts out there. I'm sure they're all eager to talk to you, as cool a guy you so obviously are.

Re: Why are we so thin at QB?

Apr 7, 2021, 9:35 AM

TP has shown me nothing to give me faith that he can be counted on in a real game situation since he's been here. Yes, he has the physical attributes, but he's light years behind DJ.

flag link military_tech thumb_downthumb_up

Re: Why are we so thin at QB?

Apr 7, 2021, 9:54 AM

Light years?

I dunno about that. I saw a guy really coming on and I was starting to wonder if Clemson was about to have itself a QB controversy, you wanna know the truth. That Achilles definitely puts that on the back burner because that's at least a year-long rehab.

The thing I love about DJU is his arm. The guy's got a rare, rare, rare arm. I mean, 10 out of 10. Better even (dare I say it) than Trevor's was, was probably up there with Jeff George's or John Elway's, can throw it through a car wash without the ball getting wet, as Jerry Glanville used to say. I'm less crazy about his mobility and ability to extend plays. He can run when he decides to but he's not Trevor and he's definitely not Deshaun.

Taisun, I saw distinct flashes of that Russell Wilson escape-artist stuff Dabo was talking about that absolutely drives DC's insane. Be interesting to see where he is a couple years from now as he continues to grow as he puts it all together, because that guy's got some real interesting tools.

Not sure which guy has the bigger upside, frankly. Be an interesting question for up the road.

T.P. Is. is not a starting Power 5 QB . At least not based off anything that has been witnessed by anyone with a decent knowledge of football. And no, Dabo will never say or acknowledge that even when he transfers, there’s no good in him saying that.

He may come on in year 4 when he starts for Coastal Carolina or Georgia St., but his field vision and lack of confidence in his throws are evident right now. Having said that , he was the 3rd best QB and could have been used in emergency situations.

Apr 7, 2021, 7:49 PM [ in reply to Re: Why are we so thin at QB? ]

You played the game but didn’t know what a boundary receiver was? Or what the 5 man was? Hmmmmmmm.

And when I said data points, I wasn’t just talking about the spring game. Every game action he’s been in he’s been absolutely dreadful. There are tons of college qbs, even qbs in the fcs, that have physical tools. That means nothing as to if you’re going to be a good college qb.

Thanks for pointing out that imaginary thumbs up and down buttons are so important to your life. That’s as silly as your liberal leftist talking points.

One thing I agree with Walt D on is "coaches like to stockpile quarterbacks but quarterbacks don't like to be stockpiled". I suspect that next year with Klubnick that we will be able to get another good QB because they think they will be able to compete for the starting job. I doubt that Klubnick thinks he is going to come in here is take DJ's job, just like DJ thought about Trevor.

Anybody remember the last time we played Maryland when they had an LB playing QB?

It might have been a good idea to bring in another scholarship QB in 2020 along with DJ. Instead, the coaches got Helms to come in as a walk-on (had offers from Liberty, Troy, and USF).

But, we are thin because not everyone is on campus. The depth chart would have looked like this:

DJ
Taisun
Bubba
Helms

That’s 1 generational talent, two 4 star recruits, and a walk-on that turned down three D1 offers. That’s not thin.

flag link military_tech thumb_downthumb_up

Trolling! Though I can say without speculation!

Apr 10, 2021, 1:57 PM

Why are we not 4 deep at qb?
It started with Trevors first season after he took Bryant starting job. All future qb’s who wanted to start, namely Brice, waited behind him until DJ became 2nd man up at the whatever game and ND game. The backups saw the writing on the wall and transferred so they would have a chance to start. Guess what,!, they did,, Brice started at his new school after leaving the spring DJ came in, Johnson will probably start at his new school after transferring this past offseason, as well as another 3rd string guy.
No speculation Keller just facts. The coaches recruited to well I guess!

By the way, like you mentioned, TP tore his Achilles but Helms looked to be the next man up!

Solution has already been in place before this happened with putting Pearman at the role of transfer recruiting. The coaches probably did not in a million years think they would need it so fast but it’s amazing how much foresight they have.

Hope this helps but I have a suspicion you already knew.
