Regardless of the fact that they get an extra bye week while everyone else plays conference championship games, nobody will change anything.

That if ND gets into the CFP without actually joining a conference, it's proof of concept and from then on they have zero incentive to join a conference. If you can get there without playing a conference championship game, you'd much rather have the extra week of rest.

Alabama can do this even with a conference championship. That is worse in my opinion.
