For any Clemson Historians out there--one of my relatives

dug this up this week: an "Entrance Payment Session" for Clemson Agricultural College for 1948-49. It was either for my grandfather or my great-uncle's matriculation.

Some highlights:

- Tuition was $20.00 for an in-state student and $62.00 for an out-of-state student. I'm guessing this is quarterly so annual tuition for an SC resident was a whopping $80!
- $80 in 1948 was about the equivalent of $851 in 2019...
- The uniform cost for freshman was almost as much as tuition and fees.
- Apparently you had to re-purchase a new coat belt and belt every year, as well as 6 shirts.
- It's cut off in the picture but looks like Vets going to Clemson on the GI bill could just wear their service uniforms instead of purchasing a new one.

Thought some people may find this interesting.

Any other alumni on TigerNet from the immediate Post-War era?

Wow, it's remarkable how little tuition

has gone up since then. Kudos to the University for honoring this tradition of low cost education.

Don't know what tuition is these days but I'm gonna go out on a limb and say it's not $900!

That's really neat. My Dad was there that year (48-52). A little cheaper than today!

Check your Tmail. My dad was there in that time as well.***

My tuition at the University of Florida before WW2 was $27.00 per semester. I can't recall for certain but believe my ROTC uniform was free. For 16 hours per semester, that was $1.69 per semester hour. Compare that figure to the current cost per semester hour.

I was working at CU around 1980 when Tillman was getting a renovation. We discovered a long-forgotten cache of Clemson historical items in an attic in a vault in the Registrar's office and moved it all down to the Cow Barns for temporary storage. I spent days down there going through it all and found, for example, the original prospectus for Clemson A&M College which was presented to the SC legislature, a framed certificate declaring John C. Calhoun as Secretary of War signed by one of the Adams boys, John Quincy, I believe. All these historical items and many, many more eventually landed in the basement of the library in what was then called the "Strom Thurmond Institute". Very interesting stuff which I'm sure Dr. Jerry Reel has reviewed most, if not all, of it. I wonder where it is now?
