CBS Sports is unanimous - Morris hot HC candidate
Aug 1, 2013, 11:57 AM
|
|
Just 4 guys' opinions. But it's unanimous they think Morris will be moving on in a year to a HC position. The question to me is - will there be a desirable position he would want by the end of this season?? There was a lot of change in 2012/2013. He may have to wait for a preferred spot.
Other opinions are interesting here, too, but this is the one that stuck out to me.

The one thing they're not considering.

Chad has enough buzz to wait for an offer he actually wants. He has earned the right to be selective. Unless Texas or aTm come open, or some shocker like UGA/LSU, I don't see him moving just yet.

He could be the most desirable coach in the country, but if there isn't an opening that is worth the switch for him it doesn't matter. And last year the was a lot of rotation of HCs. It could happen again and it only takes one good one, I guess. But no top Div 1 spots seem under threat right now. There are 13 games to go to see what happens, though.

I agree 110%. It would be very stupid of him to take any job with a program so far down that it may take him years to recruit it above average. That, I believe would turn eyes away from him.

the clemson area is a mighty fine place to live (I live here

too) and $1.3M is not a bad salary for the area (yes, I make slighty less) and not having the pressures AND responsibilies of a HC, I believe he will be awfully picky about which HC job he takes.

This would mean he'll break his promise to DeShaun Watson!

Chad promised Watson that if he signed with Clemson, then he'd stay for his 3-4 years.

I know that Watson once said that his commitment is to the university and he would like for Morris to be there but anything can goes...It is not fair for Morris to stick around if had a 4 million dollar package somewhere.

Could he turn around GT recruting enough?
Aug 1, 2013, 12:43 PM
|
|
The problem with GT is that he would have to really pull in a spectacular staff to bring them back into competition for local GA and even Southeastern recruits. Clemson and FL State as well as any number of SEC teams will usually win for most decent recruits.
Of course, he might be able to compete nationwide better than Johnson has. In the past GT has pulled in some decent candidates from far away.

The biggest reason for GT's horrible recruiting is...
Aug 1, 2013, 1:03 PM
|
|
Paul Johnson. The man is a football genius... but his system doesn't work well at the elite D1 level once people get used to it.
Plus he is a bit of a jerk.
I'm sure a Chad Morris led Georgia Tech would recruit just fine.
I hope he goes back to Texas... or away from us. I sure as hell don't want to play against him.

It's not primary right now. Their academics for athletes is a factor but
Aug 2, 2013, 2:00 PM

history tells me it isn't the biggest factor. Georgia Tech's academic standards have been relatively high for the last couple of decades to say the least. Despite that, they have a national championship since we do and recruited much better than they are now.
Paul Johnson recruits worse than the last 3 or 4 GT coaches. It's not as if academics have changed in that timespan. Paul Johnson is the bigger variable. And it makes sense as to why. He refuses to suck up to players, and his system is extremely unattractive to elite athletes. Do you think Chan Gailey and Ralph Freigen's systems were incompatible with the NFL? Absolutely not... which is why they recruited just fine before PJ.
Ask anyone close to the GT program and they will tell you that is the bigger difference lately. Of course they know that academics is a disadvantage for athletics, but they had been used to success despite that.

to do. He's going to leave a bare cupboard on the defensive side of the ball and a group of players on offense that will have a tough time transitioning to a different offense, particularly an extremely up-tempo one like Morris ones.

...so that could make it easy for Morris (or anyone) to step into a decent starting salary and still save Texas some money while proving themselves.
But they are starting out ranked lower than expecte (15). They have a big number of returning players. They've had some highly ranked recruiting years recently. So, expectations are low but a lot runs is their favor. Unless they blow it and go 9-4 again. Then he is likely toast.

Chad isn't going anywhere.
The only job he would even want is the TAMU job and that ain't gonna be open for a while.
He loves Clemson and he loves the continuity we have here.
He will continue to OC for Clemson for several years. I don't care what CBS says...

there's no way any human could turn down that much money. A five or six year contract for 4-6 million a year would set him for life. Just like OPie, he wouldn't have to produce to collect the money.
