When did you de-coot ?

Jul 18, 2021, 10:52 PM

For those of you like me who might have had an early childhood mis-development….. You know, raised in a garnet and black household or maybe in a neighborhood where all the other kids were misguided Gamecock fans….

What was the defining moment when you concluded you simply could not be a pathetic, whiny, sniveling Gamecock fan ? For me it’s hard to pin it down to one precise moment but…..

I grew up in a Gamecock household. When I was little they dressed me in garnet and hauled me off to every Gamecock sporting event in town. I was there with my parents and my older brother and sister sitting in the west side lower bowl at “Carolina Stadium” before they ever built the east side upper deck. We were there routinely at Carolina basketball games when Frank McGuire’s teams were really good. We were always at the Roost for baseball games and if Bobby Richardson’s daughter didn’t have a desire to do the job that day, I got to be the batboy.

Probably my earliest memory of wanting to defect came late one evening after we’d come home to our house in the Rosewood area after the rivalry basketball game which Clemson had won in the old Coliseum. It was cold in the house and my father had just turned the furnace up. While we’re waiting for it to kick on, I remarked, “I don’t like Carolina no more. I like Clemson !” I was maybe about 5 or 6 years old. My sister naturally responds, “Eeewwwww ! You like Clempson!” I don’t know why that memory stands out to me but it does.

I can remember being at the infamous “No Cigar Today” game in ‘77. That was the most dramatic change of momentum I’d ever seen in a football game and Jerry Butler’s catch seemed to happen relatively up close for me. It was a stunning finish and I had to admire Clemson’s football moxy at that point. Then comes Charlie Bauman, Woody Hayes and the punch. I think I was riveted to Clemson football with that performance.

By about the age of 12 I had established a core group of neighbors friends. They were relatively evenly split between Carolina fans and Clemson fans. Through middle school I began to see a trend with the “Carolina” kids. They were obviously butt-hurt over losing in football and they whined and cried incessantly. Their hatred for Clemson and all that is orange was on display 24/7 and it came across as more than just rivalry. It was just plain pathetic cry-sacking. If that look wasn’t bad enough, they’d double down always pretending to somehow be superior. To me, the average Carolina fan came across as just a sore loser. Yeah, there was no way I ever wanted to be numbered with that crowd.

When I tell Carolina fans how I grew up, invariably they’ll ask, “ What happened ?” I tell them, “Free will. …..And 1977.”

I was born and raised a South Carolina fan and married into a Clemson Family. My Wife's Dad was a 1943 Graduate and had season tickets. I went to many games with them. When the Tigers played UofSC I wore Garnet. In 1977 at Willy Brice after the catch we were walking out and I was in Garnet and my Wife was in Orange. The South Carolina fans were cussing and throwing things at Her and I literally had to fight my way out. I decided at that Moment that I wanted no part of being a Gamecock. I became a Tiger Fan. We are still IPTAY members. This was the Second best decision I ever made. The first was Marring into a Clemson Family. We married in October and my Father in law finally forgave me for making Him miss a home game!

I did not grow up a fan of either school as I was not born in this state let alone this country. Was not a huge football fan but was a huge soccer fan as that was the only sport I knew. I began to follow Clemson soccer in high school and went to a few games fell in love with the campus and school. Worked my butt off to get my grades up high enough to get in killed the SAT and enrolled in 85. My daughter recently graduated from Clemson in 2018. Her fiance graduated in 2016. Keeping it the family.

I grew up un Columbia surrounded by nothing but gamecock fans. My family was from NC, so fortunately I didn't have family ties to the school. I vividly remember being in 4th grade going with a friend and his family to a Game at WB and sitting next to a 400+ lb man with a big slurpy cup he was dipping into. If his mass encroaching on my personal space wasn’t enough, he spilled his dip spit on me at one point in the 2nd quarter…. and I was done. I have disliked everything gamecock since that point. I followed that up with a trip to Clemson with my best friend the next month.. and was sold from then on… didn’t even apply to school anywhere else..

For me, career day my senior year in high school. I grew up a huge carolina fan (early 80's), and was so tired of hearing about the Clemson 81 championship.

At our career fair, I talked to the carolina folks about their engineering program, and was excited. I knew that's what I wanted to do, and I liked what they were telling me. I did well on the SAT and the carolina person said my scores would easily get me into their engineering program.

I talked to several other schools that day, then finally talked to the Clemson folks (I'm still not sure why). I really liked the way they described their different programs, then they asked me about my SAT scores. Feeling confident (after what carolina told me), I told them. They said those were good scores, but Clemson typically requires scores a little higher than mine for admission.

I asked the Clemson people "why are your requirements for the the engineering program so much higher than carolina's?" One of them looked me dead in the eye and said "Son, you just answered your own question."

I took the SAT again (scored a little higher), and got accepted into Clemson for the spring semester. The rest is history.

dads side of the family are chickens and moms side of the family are tigers but grew up outside of Columbia. some weekends I would go up to Clemson and some weekends id stay in the slums. My dad successfully brainwashed my brother and he tried the same with me but sitting in the roach at 7 years old watching those clowns storm the field and tear down the goal posts after ending their 0-21 streak against New Mexico State I thought to myself "what the hell am I watching? maybe mom is right after all"

I moved from East TN to Greenville for work.

Jul 19, 2021, 7:50 AM

After a few short months I moved to Easley and noticed a sign which said 'How about them Tigers.' I asked the kid I was riding with 'what tigers,' and he schooled me on Clemson. I didn't know where Clemson was at the time and had no idea how much God planned to bless me via Clemson.

After suffering poverty for a few years in Easley working as a sheetrock hanger and finisher I took a job in G'ville running the drywall finishing crew on the Hyatt. Yes, it was a long, long time ago. While working there I noticed the most important men on the job were engineers. When difficult or critical layout work was being done they were supervising. Don, Sid and Bob, I'll never forget the names.

I spent some time wondering what I'd forgotten until one morning it occurred to me, I had forgotten to finish my education since dropping out of high school, getting a GED diploma and going into construction. A few months later I found Clemson and went there to enroll.

They laughed at me. I'd been out of school for about 12 years so they told me to go to jr college and prove I could do the work. After two quarters at G'ville Tech I returned to Clemson and picked up an application. I had delivered it, coffee stains and all. I remember that well. I also remember getting a acceptance letter in the mail three days later.

I tried to enroll in Building Science but they didn't take transfers from outside Clemson so I had to waste a semester in engineering then transfer from within the university to the College of Art and Architecture.

During that first semester I fell in love again. Clemson had something I wanted and being a grown redneck I came to take that which was mine, an education. Clemson gave it up like a prom date and it was good too. Now I've enjoyed over three decades of a Clemson education, Clemson sports and Clemson fellowship and brotherhood.

It wasn't exactly love at first sight but this love has grown and become solid making it a 'by death do we part,' relationship.

Lived in cootlumbia when I was young 4 to 15yo, but never a coot. Had a uncle that lived in Charlotte that would take me to The Valley for games. We would make at least one road trip a year, usually a bowl if the Tigers were going. Sold cokes at the roach when they were playing my Tigers as that was the only game I wanted to see. Born in Rock Hill and moved back when 15. Took 2 years to wash off the stench.

We didn't talk about college at all...

My sr year I decided to to apply to a back up school in SC so asked the kids in my classes (which were tne top 20 kids in the school) what the best school in SC was... most said clemson.

I went to the guidance counselor to get an application and she said I wasn't smart enough to get into clemson. Said I should go to tricounty tech.. work my way into a college of charleston or Furman. I applied on my own.

At my high school "college fair" I asked the guidance counselor why there wasn't a table for Clemson. His response: "Because I went to Florida State." I always knew he was a jerk. So I applied on my own and the rest is history - now ancient history.

I actually grew up in a neutral household (father went to el CID), and grew up liking both. I liked the 70’s Maguire basketball teams. About ‘75 I flipped to Clemson after going to Red Parker’s football camp.

Yes, I noted the pathetic jealousy of a large number of Carolina fans. It was not a good look to a 10 year old.

One of my neighbors was a big booster and his son was an equipment manager for the coots. I actually got to meet a few players at their house.

My first Clemson game, I sat on the hill with my cousin. Much to my dismay, he kept pointing out to others that I was a "carolina fan". This was in my early teens.

After attending a few Clemson games, I became hooked, and there was no looking back. It's odd how I actually started to hate the coots. My older brother is still a gamecock fan. He had a lot of fun during their 5 game winning streak, but no longer seems to talk about it too much.

I've been a Clemson fan for as long as I can remember. As I have stated a couple times, my brother attended that school in the columbia area.

My parents cheered for both schools...trying to keep peace in the family.

Once I moved into Johnstone back in 1979, my dad mentioned at work that he had a son at each school. He said he received so much crap about having a son at Clemson from his co-workers (he worked in Columbia) that he became a diehard Clemson fan.

He simply couldn't stand the stupidity of their fan base.

It was Clemson vs. Carolina game of my freshman year.

I remember being shocked/disappointed when I learned they were our "rival". I honestly figured we must suck. Being too embarrassed to tell anyone back home I kept it to myself. 100% true story. For anyone else who grew up in a different part of the country you know what I'm talking about. The only people that consider it a rivalry grew up in SC, and they're mostly Gamecocks.

Not a de-cootment, just a little perspective from someone who never had a dog in the hunt until he set foot on Clemson's campus as an 18 year old.

Mine is a story of redemption and being saved by the career

Jul 19, 2021, 9:01 AM

I chose.

My family already had two Coots by the time my college decision rolled around. I had my choice of any school I wanted to attend, as long as it was within the boundaries of South Carolina. My parents had made it VERY clear that there would be no out-of-state tuition being paid.

Not knowing what I really wanted to do or be, other than I KNEW I did not want to take over the family farm, I went to my high school guidance counselor, who suggested Chemical Engineering as a worthy and lucrative (HA!) career. Okay, I can't really complain about the money, I did well enough to retire comfortably.

Now, with the career path chosen, I looked at the schools in state, and Clemson was ranked FAR ahead of USuK in the Engineering curriculum. The only other school that was in the running at all was Furman. But, having been there as a Furman Scholar, I could see there was far too much studying going on, this could interfere with the college experience. But, Clemson was a problem for me, as, having been raised with two Coot siblings, attending Clemson was like blasphemy. But, career trumped school pride in the end, and Tigertown Bound, I was. I had been so sure of myself getting in, with high SAT scores and good grades, that I didn't even APPLY anywhere else but Clemson. I would have been truly SOL if I had been turned down. But,thankfully it was easier to get into Clemson back then than it is now.

Now, I figured I would attend Clemson, take their Engineering degree, and never root for them in anything, sportswise. That lasted until the very first football game in the Valley. Suddenly, the blinders came off, I said "Thank You, Jesus", and became Solid Orange, just like that. That "Something in Those Hills" had gotten me, 100%! And, you want to know something funny? Mom and Dad had never really bought any USuk gear, even though they had already sent two kids through there. But, when I went to Clemson, suddenly little bits of Tiger stuff started showing up around the homestead. Who knew?

Turned against the coots because of an uncle who lived in Columbia who made a point to constantly make fun of the Tigers when I was in middle school. Had a high school teacher who graduated from Clemson who presented himself well as a "Clemson Gentleman" and I was sold on attending there. Still knew so little about the school and traditions that I got a haircut the day before leaving for my Rat year. Wasted that money for sure.

Two days before moving to Knoxville, I de-Vol-ed. It was the right choice.

Clemson offered me a better scholarship package. I think I got the letter on a Thursday, drove down to Clemson Friday to confirm everything, and moved in on Saturday early August.

Never a coot. I came from a generally uneducated family, yet we looked down on the coots... in Virginia. My father was up until that point the only one who attended college and did so using the the 10-year part time plan while working at the factory. He said the coots could not even tie their own shoes and thought it was some type of accomplishment being as ignorant as they were.

I remember in middle school, that one or two idiots would wear the coot stuff as a way to wear "co.cks" in public. So when you take into the fact that their were deemed acceptable to a 7th grader to get around "profanity" as middle-school-cool, you know they are weak-sauce.

Good topic...I too was born a coot but got smart

Jul 19, 2021, 2:48 PM

My Dad has got his undergrad degree from SCAR, but he transferred in and graduated after his junior year, so he was never fully indoctrinated. Nevertheless, we lived close to the Armpit in Orangeburg, so when I was born in '68, we were Coot fans. There is a photo somewhere around of me in a Coot sweatshirt as a 4 or 5 year old. My oldest brother used to go to Frank McGuire basketball camp every year, but we didn't go to football games.

It was early '77 when one of my buddies took me to my first Clemson game, and it was all over then. I remember where I was when "The Catch" happened (sadly, at a mall in Charleston watching it in an appliance store and not at the actual game). In '78, I was given an assignment in 6th grade to write a poem entitled "What is (color of your choice)?". I chose orange, and my poem was quite memorable - even published in the school newspaper. I have quoted it a couple of times on this board, but somehow it does not sound as impressive now, and it was not exactly politically correct, either.

In '84, my middle brother accepted a gold scholarship to Clemson, and two years later, I followed him, although I was on the party plan and not the scholarship plan. Now I am married to a Clemson girl, and have my youngest daughter enrolling next month. My oldest daughter is in CU grad school, and my son is a CU graduate.

I've come a long way since entering this world. The Tigers lost to the Coots on the gridiron the first three games after I arrived. While I don't celebrate those victories, I do like to think that my switching sides must have contributed to the domination that has resumed and accelerated over the last 50 years.

We always & still do hear nothing but how Clemson sucks from them. We as a family including my mom were always Clemson fans along with all of my dads family who all lived along the SC & Ga line.

I can say I always pulled for the coots one game year & as you can imagine that was against UGA. That in no way means I’m a coot. I just knew the coots were going to lose the majority of their games anyway.

I was raised in a family that was Gamecocks on both sides. My grandfather would take me and my older brother to the Clemson vs. USC game each year. This started when I was about 6 yrs old (1961). I was a Gamecock. My brother was a Gamecock. My father and uncle were Gamecocks. My grandfather was a Gamecock. Every year up in Clemson before the game we'd go up to Fike and get the bar b que chicken. I'd get to walk around campus and we ALWAYS were one of the first people into the stadium...we'd see how many times we could walk around inside the stadium before kickoff. My brother and I were on the Hill and I was already feeling uneasy about pulling for USC because I always had a better time at Clemson. Well this Gamecock scored a touchdown and all of the Gamecock fans on the hill started picking fights. At that moment I had seen enough. I ripped off my Gamecock jacket, threw it on the hill and screamed that I was a tiger. My brother said that he was going to tell my grandfather and he was gone. There I was alone as a 6 yr old on the hill wondering if my grandfather would ever take me to another game or even give me a ride home! What had I done? A couple of Clemson men managed to get me to the car. My grandfather still drove me home to Kingstree but didn't talk to me very much. When we got home I had to tell my parents what I had done. Remember, I'm 6 yrs old. Fortunately everyone, except my older brother, forgave me and continues to support me. So in 1964 we lost 7-3 , but gained a lifetime fan. Plus, my younger brother saw the light and attended Clemson.

I attended first grade through 7th grade in Charleston. I usually pulled for the Citadel. Halfway through 7th grade, we went to visit my grandmother in NJ. My Dad got very ill during the visit so my Mom packed everything up in SC and moved us to NJ.
When it came time to choose a college, I applied to Southern Mississippi and Appalachian State because of their marching bands, USuck because I may have been able to get a band scholarship (and in 1969, I liked their basketball team of Roche, Owens, Cremins, Riker and Ribock), and Clemson because I always watched Frank Howard's Sunday recap of Saturday's game when we lived in Charleston. Also tuition was less to go as an out of state student at all those schools than being an in state student in NJ.
South Carolina accepted me first after I had a really poor SAT score in my junior year of HS. I retook the test my senior year of high school a scored over 200 points higher. Clemson sent me an acceptance letter after my second SAT score and said they had room if I still wanted to come there. My Dad's advice was that Clemson was the better school so I enrolled in August of 1970. It only took minutes of being on campus to hate everything gamecock including the basketball team I had been pulling for.
