What's up with that mitten thing

that some baserunners put on? I've noticed some of the girls wear one too.

Is it just to give you a little bit of extra reach when you dive for a base, or provide some sort of protection, or something else?

I never recall seeing that before this season, but I don't watch as much baseball as I used to.

I suspect it is to protect jammed finger and such, but yeah it looks weird. This is first year I've seen those things used as well.
