What's next after ESPN?

Jan 6, 2016, 8:45 AM

They are losing money and slowly becoming irrelevant (obvious by the layoffs and trying to rebrand themselves). So what's the next big money maker in sports? Is it another sports channel (fox? CBS)? or is it a different experience? If so what?

ESecPN isn't going away... They are right where they want to

Jan 6, 2016, 8:49 AM

Be....

They are talking up Bama to get the spread as big as possible and then they are gonna bet the house (DisneyLand and all) on Clemson!

Yes, they now are only 10 times bigger

Jan 6, 2016, 8:51 AM

than all the other sports networks combined. Last year, they were 15 times bigger. The end is near.

The question isn't when is it going to happen. The question is when it does happen what will take over the sports reporting world.

I think the next "big thing" and quite honestly not sure how it is going to work, is Netflix, YouTube, etc. as delivery systems for sports. I think we are in "Blockbuster Video" mode of sports broadcasting, where we think this is the greatest thing but then technology advances come along that makes "Blockbuster Video" totally irrelevant. eSECpn, Fox Sports and CBS Sports are the Blockbuster's of today. Not sure how it's going to work but they will be irrelevant in 10 years.

How would that look like? and What would Netflix have to do to pull in that contract?

That's not just ESPN...that's TV in general.

Jan 6, 2016, 9:05 AM [ in reply to Re: What's next after ESPN? ]

It's all going in the direction of streaming.

flag link military_tech thumb_downthumb_up

Which is why comcast is the sleeping giant in sports

Jan 6, 2016, 9:09 AM

they have several sports networks already....and they control a significant portion of the bandwidth in the country to deliver the streaming of other networks.

Add in your cable, internet and phone and comcast controls the way you communicate and receive information from the rest of the world. They can't freakin' lose.

If NBCs sports broadcasts weren't so bad comcast might have already taken over the sports landscapes.

ESPN's losses have more to do with cord-cutters than people

Jan 19, 2019, 11:42 AM

not pleased with their content. Viewership isn't down, subscribers are.

Look for them to sell WatchESPN as a standalone in the near future.

flag link military_tech thumb_downthumb_up

Yeah. ESPN is irrelevant

Jan 6, 2016, 9:04 AM

They are just the primary driver of your cable bill.
They are just the primary driver of ABC/Disney stock, one of the most lucrative companies on earth.
They are just the primary reason that there is a CFB playoff.
They are just the primary reason that so many players get to go to bowl games.
They are just the most watched cable network.
They are just the most listened to radio network.
They are COMPLETELY irrelevant in the world today!

It will be a decade or more before there is a viable alternative to ESPN, and it will likely be something that ESPN created (like their integrated streaming that is now on the ESPN app) that is completely separate from your cable network. The only likely alternative would be if conference can create a direct to consumer application that cuts out ESPN.

Most cord cutting is due to the rise in cost on cable bills that are caused by the conference network fees. So its as much the conferences' fault as it is ESPN. As much as fans (rightly) complain about ESPN's bias in reporting, fans should also realize that ABC/ESPN is the economic engine that powers big time college athletics. If that goes away, either every school cuts their budgets in half or you can expect your ticket costs to double.

flag link military_tech thumb_downthumb_up

They won't be irrelevant and aren't going anywhere.

Jan 6, 2016, 9:16 AM

They will always be the biggest in sports. They had to lay people off mainly because people are getting Hulu, Apple, etc etc. People that don't care about sports aren't forced to take ESPN anymore/ ESPN will always be the biggest for those of us who are sports fans.

Re: They won't be irrelevant and aren't going anywhere.

Jan 6, 2016, 9:35 AM

Always? So in 100 years they will still be the leader in sports broadcasting? Or is there a possibility there is something else that could come along? That is my point. When/if that happens, what will take it over?

As long as your alive.

Maybe not that long. I am saying there is no end in sight. It's kind of like asking when the Ipod will be a non factor.
