What’s missing?

May 16, 2022, 9:23 PM

I watched the games against UVA. We are better than UVA, as we are better in my opinion than Louisville, Pitt and most of these ACC teams. I think our offense is scarier and pitchers stuff for most part is better.

UVA Sunday arm was average at best throwing 85-87 with average secondary.

I am honestly lost by this team. 1-6 in our lineup is dangerous and 7-9 can lose a ball at any moment. Our staff has top 10 stuff at times but is so inconsistent.

Is that what it is? Inconsistent? Is it coaching? Is it mental toughness? Is it lack of fundamentals or approach to game? I have now seen about 25 games and one day we look like a top 10 team and the next we aren’t even a mid major caliber team.

How does this coaching staff allow this team to be so up and down? Or is it me and this team is just average.

I have been watching clemson baseball since 1984 and this team has talent. Yes we strike out too much 516 times in 51 games.

Help me out here friends.

You have answered your own questions. Inconsistencies are killing this team. The strikeouts are a major problem and I know strikeouts are way up in both college and MLB but they are a problem. I don’t know our team’s stats but we walk batters at the worst time and pitch selection is sometimes questionable. Grice and Brewer not hitting all year has been tough to overcome.

Yeah I guess I did answer my own questions. I’m just scratching my head on this season.

I see us as being "consistently inconsistent" in two key

ways.

1) Pitching: We show talent at times, but then, for no particular reason, we suddenly get into stretches where the plate is jumping around to the point of actually walking in runs. Multiple times this season. To me, that is a much bigger pitching failure than allowing a long ball. Because, in reality, the strike zone is sitting there, all the time, without moving. You should be able to find it when you need to.

2) Hitting tactics: At times, we have a good approach, more along the lines of "small ball", and we make good contact when going up to the plate in that mindset. But then, just as with the pitching, we suddenly seem to fall in love with trying to swing for the fences ala the old Braves baby bull Ryan Klesko, on every swing. So, just as he did, we then strike out, just about every time we do that. Nobody is a worse offender than Caden Grice when it comes to that. Sorry to have to call him out individually, but to me, he is just about the biggest "Feast or Famine" player we have ever had. HE would equate to Dave "King Kong" Kingman. Kingman hit a bunch of home runs, but that was it. His batting AVERAGE wasn't far above the Mendosa line.

Staff doesn’t develop guys. Strider Was good at clemson but not great. Look what the minors and majors have done to him! I would say attitude as well. That falls on coaching. The team last year was lost and was down many times in close games. At least this year I will applaud the staff with having a more player led leadership.

You typically know your baseball, though you are quite pessimistic, and so I find Strider to be a very odd example for you to use to show that the staff doesn't develop guys.

He had a freshman season that was nothing to write about and then he tore up his elbow the week before his sophomore season started.

He then had several starts in which he was on a strict pitch count for his first live work since being a year out of Tommy John surgery. Then the season got cancelled for COVID.

What exactly did you want the staff to do better with him, and why are you shocked that he continued on the trajectory that Clemson saw him heading toward during the early parts of the 2020 season?

I know for a fact the staff doesn’t develop players as well as should. This comes from a fellow legion coach I coach with whose friend coached with monte. I know this also from a player who plays and his dad.

Put the ball in play. There's nothing wrong with hitting the ball on the ground and getting a single with runners in scoring position. It reminds me of the movie Major League.
