What it Means to be a Clemson Fan

Jun 20, 2022, 10:04 AM

Being a Clemson Fan (sorry this post is long)

Last week, a fan of another program claimed to have seen the light and was considered becoming a Clemson fan. If this person – or others – is serious about leaving the dark side and is considering becoming a Clemson fan, he/she should know what being a Clemson fan actually entails.

In my attempt to help, I have identified eleven items describing what it is like to be a Clemson fan. I am sure some of you will be able to identify many items that I have missed.

First of all, being a Clemson fan is a wonderful, joyous life experience. It is a calling to greatness that is only understood by those who live it.

That said, being a Clemson Fan includes:

1. You check Tigernet multiple times each day. First, you click on new stories (particularly those involving football and recruiting). Then you check other Tnetter’s posts. You laugh at the ridiculous posts and give them a thumbs up for comedic value. You appreciate the insightful posts and you give them a thumbs up. You also find yourself puzzled at a few posts that make no sense.

2. You debate with your Clemson fan friends about which sport is the second most important college sport: Men’s Basketball; Baseball; or Softball.

3. You wonder if something is cognitively wrong with your Non-Clemson fan friend who says, with a straight face, that a pro sport (such as the NFL) is more exciting than its college equivalent (such as college football). After composing yourself, you make a joke about your friend going back up north where he/she obviously grew up. You both laugh and walk away friends. As you walk away you wonder if something is cognitively wrong with your friend.

4. Whenever you run into your old friend, who is an Alabama fan, you smile and have fun with your friend. You talk about the upcoming/current football season. You ask how his/her family is doing. Before you leave you tell your friend how great it was to see him/her again. All of which is genuine. You talk about the upcoming football season again and then you leave. The entire time, however, your mind was vividly reliving certain National Title plays such as Watson-to-Renfrow; or the Terrel pick-six; or the fake field goal stopped by Niles Pinkney. You assume your friend was mentally reliving Bama’s successful onside kick against Clemson.

5. When you run into your old friend, who is a Georgia fan, you listen politely as your friend tries to convince you (and, actually, tries to convince him/herself) of two things:
(1) Kirby Smart is the best college coach in football
(2) UGa has caught and/or surpassed Clemson, Ohio State, Bama, and any/all others as the most elite program in the sport.
Your friend desperately hopes you will agree. Instead, you simply choose to listen politely. You then ask your Georgia fan friend for a refill of your sweet tea.

6. Every two to three weeks you see that a South Carolina fan has said/done something to puff up the Gamecock football program, you smile. At these moments, you remember that South Carolina has a football team. Part of you wants to laugh. Part of you wants to give him/her a thumbs up for trying so hard.

7. About one to three times per year, Paul Finebaum makes a petty remark about Clemson. You smile as remember two things:
(1) Finebaum hopes to press buttons that will elicit sufficient reactions to boost his ratings.
(2) Finebaum hopes to marginalize any perceived threat to the SEC in general and to Bama in particular.
At these moments you remember that Finebaum still has a show. You applaud Finebaum for overcoming considerable obstacles in keeping his show going for so long.

8. Your wardrobe includes quite a bit of Clemson items (t-shirts, collar shirts, hats, boxer shorts, etc.). You have certain Clemson items, however, that you still have not worn. You cannot, for example, wear that one certain National Championship shirt because you want it to stay looking new. One day, after you are long gone, your relatives will probably find it, still unworn, and fail to treat it with the proper respect that you gave it.

9. You have watched the last drive of the 2016-2017 National title game hundreds of times. You still get excited every time Renfrow makes that catch.

10. You have watched Terrel’s pick-six hundreds of times. You still get excited each time.

11. You still Coke bottles and cans commemorating the 2016-2017 and the 2018-2019 National Championships. One day, after you are long gone, your relatives will probably find them, still unworn, and fail to treat them with the proper respect that you gave them.

Clemson: Academic Excellence! Athletic Excellence!

If you still have the commemorative cans, be aware they leak

Drill a small hole and let the soda slowly drain out.

I still have a 1981 can and bottle. The can has been drained, but the bottle is full. Both look as good as the day they were made.

The glass will hold unless the cap rusts.

The thin aluminum will not.

I still have my six pack of unopened 1981 soft drink cans. :)

Also forgot about the 1981 National Championship. Don’t forget about the cans from the 1981 NC. Still have a few. Still watch it on an occasion.

Yep, too long

Hope being a true fan doesn't mean having a long attention span.

to be Tiger fans like Bulldog suspiciously wants to be if they're patient and literate enough to read all that good info and scenarios.

You also tolerate the Bama fan that is half your age that you meet at a charity golf outing who calls you a “bandwagon jumping Clemson fan” because according to him you couldn’t find a Clemson fan prior to 2016 and now they are everywhere. Then you explain to him that you have orange socks and T shirts that are older than him and wish him a nice day.

I am a Clemson fan. I seldom post as you can see by my rating. I don’t even know how long I’ve been signed up on t-net. I was born, raised and lived most of my life in Pickens. My grades in high school ruled me out of attending Clemson. While some of you were Iptay members, and were going to games, I was listening on the radio and watching the few games that came on t.v. before the 81 championship, which, watching it on t.v. was the highlight of my experience until Dabo Swinney. I don’t think I saw a live game before the Bowden era. I got to go to some good games while C.J. Was running back. I’ve not been into the stadium since I retired in 2015. I don’t fit some folks mold of a fan, but though I be denounced of my fan-ship, I am. The only thing I can say that makes me a fan is I like Clemson sports. You may be gooder than me, and spend a lot more in support, but I may be just as big a fan as you (of course not by the fanmanship rules of many who have good cause to object to my claim).
