What is the deal with Deshaun Watson??

Dec 29, 2012, 9:50 AM

He is listed as a commit but all I have seen lately are snippets of him talking about what schools he likes and who he plans to visit. Talks about liking Tennessee and hoping they offer so he can "give them a shot". Isn't he the recruit who supposedly does not want us recruiting any other QB in his class? Seems as if this is a one-sided commitment at best.

Go Tigers!!

this type stuff has me scratching my head but fortunately I focus more on signing day rather than the day to day stories.

if you're going to accept commitments from kids very early in the process, you have to allow for this. We got him before he got hot. Now, he is one of the biggest 2014 names and the heat is on. He is going to look around.

I see that but aren't we taking a chance not recruiting any other QB's in that class when it is obvious he is looking around?

You really think we aren't recruiting any other QBs? You really think Dabo is taking recruiting recommendations from a 16-17 year old? Doubt it.

It will be a bumpy ride until signing day, I will be surprised if he stays.

wet about Nkeidemeikichieritchiericheke coming to Clemson, and "can't wait to see this kid in Orange" and all that, when I see Watson on the Clemson practice field, in orange, taking snaps, I'll believe it.

Many recruits today don't have what it takes to settle on 1

Dec 29, 2012, 10:42 AM

school since they are confused or dazzled by all the offers, or don't have the ability to say NO, or haven't been raised with a sense of commitment to sticking with their promise/word, or...?

I still like it when a local boy is crazy about Clemson and wants to live & die for Clemson...but today boys are coming to Tigertown from many states away and really don't know our history..so don't have that feeling for Clemson that we do.

Not sure about him, but he may be having some second thoughts, or he may fear that Morris will be elsewhere by then, but we will be fine at QB with him or without him, I believe. I see Kelly as a very gifted guy, already on the team, who will be very hard to beat out. JMO, but time will tell.

We do have 3 other 2015 QBs on our board being evaluated, but none have been offered yet.

Bo Baldwin - Aiken
Will Grier - Davidson, NC
Will Hunter - Lexington

Which ever QB comes to Tiger Town in the 2014 class, even Watson, is likely to redshirt and then play behind Chad Kelly for 2 years.

It's simple, and get used to it. Recruiting in college

Dec 29, 2012, 12:08 PM

football has gotten so far out of hand you can expect to see more and more of this. The pressure to win has caused coaches to offer high school players at a much younger age than ever before, in an attempt to "lock them down".

We had a "commitment" from Watson when he was a sophomore in high school. That's 15 years old folks - 3 more years of high school - don't even have a driver's license. Do any of you have 15-year-old kids? Are they really capable of making that kind of commitment? Do you remember when you were 15? Were you mature enough to understand "commitment", especially one of that magnitude? I know I wasn't - I didn't have a clue. And in all fairness, should we really expect these kids who commit that early to stick to it - is that in the best interest of the kid, or do we really even give a #### about them? A lot can change between 15 and 18, things that may legitimately impact where a kid wants to go to college; who are we to criticize them for that?

A lot of kids are very mature at 16-17; but most probably are not. A year - 6 months or so before college, at age 17-18, it's time to start narrowing it down, and by then it's more reasonable to expect most of them to have a pretty good idea of where they want to go. At that stage a commitment should carry some weight. However, if the absurd trend doesn't stop and hopefully reverse, in a few years we'll all be stalking pee-wee league football games and getting all fired-up when a kid we're hoping to reel in shows up for a sleep-over wearing gamecock footie pajamas.

My son is a junior in high school, plays high school football. He will sign a binding commitment to Clemson today!!

It has gotten to the point where a commitment means very little until they truly are committed after they sign the LOI.

First, congratulations to your son! Exactly what is he
