New Story: Swinney says spring will be critical for inexperienced defense

Swinney says spring will be critical for inexperienced defense

When the Tigers take the practice field on the final day of February, all eyes will be on Brent Venables and the young Clemson defense, which has to replace a bevy of starters and playmakers.

I don't think the Tiger secondary will be as desperate

Feb 13, 2016, 8:11 AM

as many foretell....there's some talent coming back that just didn't get a lot of playing time in the bigger games late in the season....but regardless, by the time early September rolls around and they've all had to go up against the best (and probably deepest) Wide Receiver crew in college football over and over again, there won't be many wide-eyed rookies left

I have full faith in BV to get these cats ready!

Feb 13, 2016, 9:05 AM

playing in one of your biggest games of the season on the road against Auburn is going to be the test of all tests! If BV can get these players ready and we can go in there and dominate Auburn at the line of scrimmage and in the secondary then there will be NO stopping us this season!! #15in16 ALLIN

Tank had 5 interceptions a game and wasn't the top ranked national leader ?
Preposterous !
I must have been in the john for most of those .

what about DOD?

Feb 13, 2016, 8:54 AM

Dorian O'Daniel. He should be starting by now, yeah? He seems to play well when he's in.

flag link military_tech thumb_downthumb_up

Wow!! I don't remember Tankersley having THAT good of a year

Feb 13, 2016, 9:37 AM

5 INT's per game? Unreal!!

I noticed Dabo didn't mention Dorian O'Daniel or Chad Smith. Is he sandbagg ing a little bit?

badge-donor-05yr.jpgmilitary_donation.jpg flag link military_tech thumb_downthumb_up

With Dabo and spring practice sometimes hearing less

Feb 13, 2016, 12:04 PM

about a player is a good thing. Sometimes he likes to talk up certain guys during bowl practice and in the spring about how great they are doing but come September those guys are no where to be seen. We heard last spring about how great Trevion and Shadell were but other than a few plays for Thompson neither one of those guys contributed and Bell redshirted. I think some of the more talented and experienced guys sandbag a little during the spring and some of the new guys go hard and shine a little bit. However, once fall starts the real players turn it on and you don't hear anything about some of the others until spring rolls back around.

What is the 2 deep at safety for Spring?***

Punting and Kick-off Coverage

Feb 13, 2016, 12:06 PM

These are overlooked in my view on its impact on the defensive performance. Having opposing teams start inside their 20, or inside the 10 in Pinions case, has huge implications on the play-calling for the offense and BV. Getting three and outs are significant and as such, having the offenses starting deep in their own territory has major benefits that don't show up in stats necessarily.
BV has proven to be an incredible DC, best we have had since Ford's day without a doubt, so I'm hopeful we will give him even more firepower if we can improve those areas, which have generally been weak in recent years (with Pinions junior year the exception).

When I look

Feb 13, 2016, 12:16 PM

At the roster of players that Dabo has to work with, it looks like a nice problem to have. Spring football will be fun. No one should question the Tigers work ethic and the talent abounds everywhere. Pass coverage by the linebackers has been an issue but I bet Coach V. Will work on that

This time last year everyone was concerned about number 4's health. I don't think there is a fan who can question his toughness after this season. The sky's the limit

Yep, special teams need new blood as with "renewed" coaching

Feb 13, 2016, 12:22 PM [ in reply to Punting and Kick-off Coverage ]

or NEW coach (I keep wanting to hear of a hire of an experienced successful young coach)

Here's the answer

http://www.tigernet.com/story/football/Clemsons-great-middle-linebacker-Skalski-talks-commitment-13518&nextbox=1

from orange and white: handled the punts and had over a 40-yard average…also handled kickoffs and was second-team All-Region kicker as well…also running back at times for Northgate team that finished 12-2, the most wins in school history…also a three-year starter in soccer…actually played football and soccer at the same time during the fall of 2013

Imagine having a backer as a punter. That'd be like having twelve men on the field. He's an excellent open-field tackler.

Hopefully Tankersley can match his 75 ints from this year

Feb 13, 2016, 12:41 PM

Its hard to believe that was only good or 20th in the country.

And yet, no one is mentioning Korin Wiggins returning. You remember that guy that seamlessly stepped in for Travis Blanks while he recovered from injury only to be injured himself before last season began. Did I miss something? Is he not coming back?

Dabo hit the nail on the head when he said we've recruited well. The talent is there. Let it develop, and then scheme around it. That is why Coach Venables has been so successful at Clemson. We're loaded, ladies and gentlemen. The cream will rise. Bryant and whoever starts opposite him (Yeargin?) have an opportunity to make a name for themselves. Meanwhile, our interior is going to be ridiculous. Boulware will lead the backers and Tankersley will lead the secondary. Let's focus on what we have...not on what we've lost.

And yes, Korrin Wiggins will be back. I can't wait to see that guy play again. He was a monster for us.
