What is Clelin Ferrell's future? As hard as it is to think

Feb 16, 2022, 6:33 PM

of him as a draft "bust", you almost have to, considering how high he was drafted. If a team takes you at the top of the first round, you are expected to be not just a role player, but a STAR. Cle Missle has underwhelmed to the point that he lost his starting job awhile ago. Covid and injuries did him no favors, either.

There is no sentimentality in the NFL. Add that to the fact that the coach AND GM that drafted him are now both gone from the Raiders organization, along with his relatively expensive rookie contract as a high first round pick, he will almost certainly be cut loose soon.

I just hope he can get a new start elsewhere. Players that are considered "busts" via the draft don't always get those second chances.

He just needs to try and make teams if he wants to stay in the league. Obviously he will probably get a 2 year deal max wherever he goes next.

I think he will be ok

I hope he managed his contract money well. I don’t expect he will be in the NFL much longer. Maybe if he can catch on with a team that better suits his skills then perhaps he gets another contract to get a second shot. Love Clelin, but it just hasn’t worked out with Raiders.

Aside from taxes and his agent, but lucky he was in Vegas for this last part as far as taxes go. California was probably a killer. Either way he is set. He can go somewhere else and prove himself for a couple of years and then maybe he can get another good contract again. I hope he does it. Either way, he is loving life financially.

Yes. For his draft selection, no doubt Cle has underperformed just as CW42 has overperformed. All that said, Geeville states real clear Cle has overperformed at the bank. So he will get a fresh start as a backup and hopefully make the years needed for long term NFL medical and pension.

Nothing wrong with leaving the league with two good legs and lots of money.

It is a huge jump from college to the NFL but he sure looked like an NFL player.

Obviously all the experts, eyes, analysts, measurables said he was the pick. I mean these people could careless what he did in CBV defense. They're looking at how he played against top olineman.

Could it be like Renfrow said on dr podcast, that it wasn't working the way the Raiders were training him so he decided to develop and do it his way. Idk - thought it was interesting though.

So maybe a new team and coach/scheme he breaks out.

I sure hope so. He was truly “Clemson” through and through. Recruiting kids to come to Clemson as he was receiving National Championship accolades!

That's why I still believe he can do it. He just needs to prove himself somewhere new. Also, I just looked it up and he is only 24 years old. He doesn't even turn 25 until mid May.

Cle is set & his shoulder injury set him back for two years. He will only get better as he continues to heal it. Look for him to breakout next season if he stays healthy!

He has underperformed because the other guy playing his position has been over performing & he had a really bad injury.

Great perspective HumbleServant®, although the it sucks that what you report is the truth.

Players recover very well from torn ACLs, but not so well from meniscus tears and messed-up shoulders. Perhaps a QB can still play well if he gets a messed up shoulder on his non-throwing side. Punters and place kickers can also do OK with a bum shoulder. Other than that, FB and a bum shoulder just don't go together.

As other have said, if C.Ferrell is toast as far as playing FB, then let's all hope that he either has (or gets very soon) a smart financial adviser who isn't a crook. He'll be fine as long as his investments aren't gambling or day-trading or too much money in REITs.

Not sure what cutting him would accomplish for LV. His contract is guaranteed. I suppose they could rework something to change the cap hit, but they’ll have to pay him the full $31M.

Could be. OP said Clelin could be “cut loose” so I’m just pointing out that there’s no benefit to the Raiders Org to do that.

First thing - quit using the word “Bust”.

Feb 16, 2022, 8:46 PM

They may not meet expectations- but to claim Clelin is a “bust” is rude and demeaning.

Re: First thing - quit using the word “Bust”.

Feb 16, 2022, 8:52 PM

I saw Ryan Clark, the former Steeler, having a debate with Rex Ryan about that. Ryan Clark says it bothers him when people are called busts, because there are so many factors, such as the team/organization they go to, injuries, and who they have around them. Rex Ryan said that a bust just means that the team didn't get what they had hoped for from such a high draft pick.

flag link military_tech thumb_downthumb_up

For once, Rex Ryan actually made sense if he said that. When

Feb 17, 2022, 11:45 AM

a team takes you as the 4th player picked in the first round of a draft, they are expecting MAJOR returns on their investment. We could don all the Orange Colored Glasses we want, but the performance on the field has not nearly matched those expectations. That is not being rude, or dismissive, it is just a hard fact.

As some others have said, the Raiders made a huge reach by taking CF that high. Had he been taken in a later round, the expectations, and financial investment would not have been nearly as high.

I made this post in no way to demean Ferrell the man. From all accounts, he has been a great team leader off the field. His personality has been a definite plus for the Raiders organization. I sincerely hope that whatever situation he goes into next, it will work out to his advantage.

Cle is going to be ok. That said, his injury and the time they spent playing him inside were less than ideal. Either way, he will be ok, He's a Clemson Man!

Re: What is Clelin Ferrell's future? As hard as it is to think

Feb 17, 2022, 1:52 PM

I think so too. From my untrained observation, LV seemed to prefer to keep him on the inside and was heavily featured on special teams and run-blocking plays. So with the step up to the pros already being a transition, he is also in a role he is less accustomed to and having less immediate success (and flash). He's a freak athlete and a hard-worker...I would not be surprised to see him pop back up with an altered scheme and/or more time in the system after recovering.

Clelin benefited from having CW and Big Dex at DT his senior year. They took the double teams and RB pickups so that he could make plays. He was a very good player but most everyone knew the Raiders took him way too early. For whatever Gruden loved our players. Regardless, he was a 2nd/3rd round pick at best but, to his credit, he capitalized on his situation and hopefully has saved and invested his $$$ and will be set for life. Kudos to him for playing the game and winning!

You said it all. Cle benefitted from playing next to CW42 and Big Dex. Without those two giants on the inside, he wouldn't have been nearly as productive. Drafting him way ahead of those two proved Mike Mayock was in idiot. I'm sure he overruled their scouting department who could see from film study what all Clemson fans understood: Cle was the 3rd best D-lineman on the team.

He needs a fresh start and the Raiders need to move on. Not sure he'll do any better on another team but at least he's set for life financially.

flag link military_tech thumb_downthumb_up

Re: What is Clelin Ferrell's future? As hard as it is to think

Feb 17, 2022, 8:11 AM

It was a mistake to draft him that high. He is not blessed with elite athleticism. I wouldn't necessarily blame Cle for this. The Raiders just made a mistake. I think in the right scheme, he can be a quality starter. But I don't see the "pro-bowl" potential like you would expect from a top 5 pick.

If he stays in Las Vegas, he will stay a backup. The Raiders drafted Maxx Crosby in the fourth round of the same draft and Crosby has turned into one of the better DE's in the league.

So, I think that it has been more about Crosby's performance than Clelin's lack of performance. I still think Clelin could have a decent NFL career,

Re: What is Clelin Ferrell's future? As hard as it is to think

Feb 17, 2022, 11:36 AM

I had hopes with Mayock/Gruden that he was being drafted for a specific reason, but it's apparent that those two know how to talk the talk, not walk the walk. Cle was overdrafted and underdeveloped and deserves and chance somewhere else (Tennessee comes to mind) to develop further.

Re: What is Clelin Ferrell's future? As hard as it is to think

Feb 17, 2022, 6:12 PM

Taking Ferrell where they did was a reach for the Raiders, but they were banking on the Championship pedigree. Just because it didn't work in Vegas doesn't mean it cant elsewhere. He's got a definite shot to at least get a look elsewhere just from his measurable's alone. If he goes somewhere that has a penchant for developing DL players he could still yet make a big impact.
