What is a student athlete ?

Jan 24, 2013, 2:28 PM

My opinion on 4 year scholarships will not be popular but logical. Athletes are awarded scholarships based on their athletic ability. The pay off is a college education. There are two different things. Regular students have to keep their grades in order to stay in school. They get no money from the school for housing, eating, or spending so they are kind of on their own. Student athletes have those perks and the expectation that all they have to do is keep their grades in order is really not fair to the regular student. Regular students are not given 4 year scholarships without expectations that fall in line with their responsibilities why should an athlete get a free 4 year pass on theirs ? I am talking about doing the job they are required ( going to class, being on time, working out when they are suppose to and being a positive contributor to the team). I don't think not seeing a player getting playing time as a reason but most kids will leave for that reason on their own. The 4 year rule is bad for any program because once secured these players have tenure and the only thing that can get them out is failing or leaving on their own or criminal offenses. Attitudes and loyalty to coach and teammates should also be a factor but it may not be. figure it out before you implement it....common sense.

Florida has boosters legally adopting players...

...to funnel cash to them.

That being said, Clemson has always taken pride in the fact that when an athlete makes a committment to the Tigers, Clemson in return makes a committment to the athlete to help them mature and prepare for life after college.

Either Teek failed to live up to his end of the bargain in his football/classroom/social life or the Tiger coaches failed to live up to theirs in fostering his physical/mental/emotional growth and valuing Teek as a person and not merely a disposable tool for the football program.

Clemson doesn't have players transferring out to the degree exhibited by 'Football Factory' schools, and I have no doubt that the blame lies squarely with Teek. However, if the recent trend continues, then it may be time to step back and re-evaluate the situation.

I value degrees above trophies, especially second place trophies.

Then coaches shouldn't promise players and their parents

Jan 24, 2013, 2:48 PM

that they would mentor, coach and help their son get a degree during the recruiting process. It should be more straight forward and honest, but coaches can't do that because they are under pressure to sign the kids.

Student athletes in football have to keep their grades up and their scholarship is far from a free ride. Wake up at 6 AM for conditioning and weight lifting, treatment in the trainer's room, eat, class, film, practice, eat, study hall etc. that is a full day for most of the season, then off season "voluntary" workouts, weight room sessions, spring practice, staying on campus to workout during the summer. It is far from free. Then you can do all of that and in the end, if they need more recruits, but don't have enough scholarships, you could be told you no longer have a place there.

Keep in mind that a number of student athletes come from lower income backgrounds and can't afford to be just a student and are left scrambling.

I didn't even get into the coaches that recruited you leaving and a new coach coming in and wanting to bring in his own players.

While I understand what you are trying to say you are wrong on many accounts.

1) Regular students who recieve full scholarships are given money for housing, eating, and many cases earn other scholarships that pay for spending money.

2) 4 year scholarships does not mean the player does not have to maintain a level of responsibility while in school. A full ride to a university is given with the understanding that a student will fulfill their obligation to the university. A scholarship to a student athlete would do the same. Even a one year student athlete scholarship can be retracted if an athlete is suspended for team rules.

Gamecocklow is just trying to justify pulling scholarships for guys that haven't made the 2 deep roster to make room for the oversign prospects.

Agreed - 4 year scholarships don't mean someone can't be dismissed for disciplinary reasons which could certainly include tardiness/absence from practices/class/film review/study hall etc. But, if a kid wants to complete his degree and is forced out simply because he can't crack the two-deep it is unethical in my opinion. The late great Bobby Dood agrees with me. Who's in your corner TigerLow?

The very present and great Dabo Swinney agrees that a scholarship is for 4 years. We are not Cootville or Alabama in that area. But I think it is a great learning experience for the athletes to be pushed very hard to perform by the coaches or else they learn that "some effort" to succeed is good enough. That is not the formula for great success in real life.

I cited Bobby Dodd because he very famously moved for Georgia Tech to leave the SEC and clashes with Alabama over ethics - particularly oversigning. I'm not sure that Dabo has ever specifically said he is against oversigning. I'm not sure he's actually "on the record" on the topic. Spurrier and Saban have specifically gone on record advocating for the one year system and justified their right to cut non-performers.

My honest opinion is that Teek wasn't cut out for the rigors of Clemson University.

With very few exceptions, Tiger coaches do a good job of evaluating whether a player is a good fit not only for the football team, but the Clemson community as well.

I think Teek came in at a time when quantity was a higher priority than quality and this is the divorce that follows a marriage of convenience.

I wish the young man good luck in the future, but he probably never should have been here to begin with.

treatment of players that he can't use anymore.

If a kid works hard, keeps his nose clean and keeps his grades up, he should keep his scholarship. If he hasn't developed the way the coaches hoped...as Dabo says...that's on the coaches.
