What Dabo said 7 years ago in November 2015 is so powerful — What happened to this version of Dabo?

Nov 27, 2022, 12:36 PM

“In the business world, you look at the old bell curve of a business," he said in November of 2015. "You’ve got the birth. You’ve got the growth. You’ve got plateau. You’ve got decline. And you’ve got death. Those great businesses out there, those great programs, they don’t plateau. So how do you do that? You have to constantly reinvent, reinvest, reset, learn, grow. You change. You have to do that. You don’t just change to change, but you have to always challenge yourself each and every year and make sure, 'OK, this may be how we’ve done it, but is it still the right way?' At least ask those type of questions.

"I think every successful business, every consistent program, that’s a mentality. You can’t be satisfied. Because just as soon as you think you’ve arrived and you’re satisfied, then you plateau and then the next thing you know you’re on that decline. Now you’re not paying attention to the little things. You don’t have the sense of urgency because you’re fat and happy. And then it’s death. The business is closed, or whatever.”

Yesterday we saw the death.

After the ND game I slept well because I told myself “at least we didn’t lose to SCar”

At this point it has to be reborn.

There's something in these hills.

Hopefully we’re not dead yet but if we don’t change something fast we die. We’ll be wishing to just win the conference

We need to do whatever it takes to get Scott back in the program.

Re: What Dabo said 7 years ago in November 2015…

Nov 27, 2022, 12:50 PM

Very insightful words on his part… but clearly he doesn’t think that they apply to him. Or he wouldn’t have used the turnover in his staff to promote inexperienced coaches to replace experienced ones and wouldn’t seek to surround himself with friends and family member “yes men” at virtually every turn. And he wouldn’t essentially refuse to use the transfer portal when it’s apparent that there’s a place for it in building and maintaining a full 85-man roster, instead giving open scholarships to his kids and his buddies’ kids as he’s done. Carson Donnelly and Drew Swinney played snaps with the game on the line yesterday. Let that sink in. And Donnelly looked so inept that he had to be pulled right back out. Big surprise.

Dabo has SAID a lot of really good things through the years, and followed those words to produce incredible results. I just wonder if he’s still hungry and committed enough to actually follow his own advice any longer.

Re: What Dabo said 7 years - Dabo's adjustment to NIL

Nov 27, 2022, 12:51 PM

Many Clemson fans have not yet recognized that we simply cannot compete on a 'spend competitively with the big money programs' basis.

I.e., the world of NIL.

Clemson's biggest donors are neither numerous enough nor 'athletically monolithic' in their donations to match up with the 'truly big money' college athletic programs.

Dabo's means to make the adjustment is limited by Clemson's financial resources. Therefore, instead of trying to outspend the other programs, he is trying to further establish the value of superior culture as being more attractive than the value of short-term money.

This is a hard row to hoe, but it is our best (and perhaps only) chance to compete.

Unfortunately, we will only be able to attract a limited 'type of player' whose family prizes long term development of their son over the allure of immediate NIL money.

Dabo has made the adjustment, but the days of us being a top 4 program on a regular basis are over. Enjoy the 10 win seasons and donate what you can spare to IPTAY ... FB can still be fun for us and in some years we will be back in the Top 4 and maybe win another National Championship.

I am curious as to how many Clemson players have NIL deals? Not sure if DJ still has one.

Well he’ll have to figure that part out. Can’t recruit in 2022 using 2015 tactics. The world is a different place and he has to adapt or he’ll get left behind
