What are the chances that they slap a brace on DW's knee

and he starts against USuC? Anyone have experience with this injury? Doesn't sound too serious.

I would conjecture.

Sprained my LCL my Jr. year playing soccer at Clemson....

Nov 17, 2014, 1:55 PM

I sprained my LCL when Peter Coles and I collided on a play during our final ACC match of the season.

Lateral ligament sprains are categorized into three grades (grade 1, grade 2 or grade 3 sprains) depending on the extent of the injury.

Grade 1 include tenderness on the outside of the knee over the ligament. Usually there will be little or no swelling. When the knee is bent to 30 degrees and force applied to the inside of the knee which puts the ligament under stress, pain is felt but there is no joint laxity (loose ligaments).

Grade 2 symptoms consist of significant tenderness on the outside of the knee over the lateral ligament. Some swelling can be seen over the ligament. When the knee is stressed as for grade 1 symptoms, there is pain and some laxity in the joint, although there is a definite end point indicating the ligament is still intact. In other words the knee cannot be bent sideways completely.

A Grade 3 sprain is a complete tear of the ligament. Pain can vary and may be actually less than a grade 2 sprain. When stressing the knee there is significant joint laxity. The injured person may complain of having a very unstable knee.

I have not heard what Grade level sprain Watson sustained but if he's listed as day to day, I am assuming it's probably a grade 1 spain.

Treatment is similar for all knee ligament injuries. If there is swelling apply RICE (Rest, Ice, Compression, Elevation). Discontinue with sport that irritates the injury. Wear a hinged knee brace to support the joint.

A grade 1 sprain involve conservative methods of treatment. These may need to be be carried out for 3 to 4 weeks and generally include pain medication, use of manual techniques such as massage, strengthening and balancing exercises. Support taping for the lateral ligaments can help with protection. The injured person is instructed to limit physical activity until the pain and swelling go away (usually about 2 to 3 weeks).

The biggest issue is that if the ligament was stretched, it may never regain its prior stability. This means that it is more likely that the knee will be somewhat unstable and could easily be injured again.

I wore a knee brace for the remainder of my playing career.

Thank you. A lot of people don't understand what the lcl is

Nov 17, 2014, 2:39 PM

does or what happens when injured. A knee brace helps the lcl enormously because the sides are sort of like an exoskeleton version of what the lcl is intended to do. An lcl tear would be tricky and your range of motion would likely never be the same as there would be a sort of "catch" when moved certain ways that would cause a fair amount of pain. Im assuming its a grade 1 and not severe at all because he himself has been saying the pain is significantly less and if it were stretched/ damaged that pain would only get worse. Now I'm sure it's painful today as in my experience and most everyone else's these type of things hurt worse the following days with the mornings having you ready to cut an appendage off. I see him wearing a sturdy brace to prevent too much lateral movement of his knee but apart from probably not being able to make such deep cuts I see him being around %100 in other aspects. I imagine the bone bruise is probably where the soreness is coming from but those heal relatively quickly. Honestly if him and stoudt switched injuries id be more doubtful because nothing's gonna help a shoulder except rest or medical intervention if needed. Deshauns knee if very treatable, rest and a knee brace would be the treatment for anyone.

All that being said I wouldn't be surprised to see him play with a knee brace for the rest of his career not as a necessity but just to make himself more comfortable and help support that ligament. I don't think we see the ridiculous cj spiller esque cuts out of deshaun for a while which is fine by me. They're fun to watch on highlights but I can't afford to replace that many pairs of pants.

He will be fitted with a custom "functional knee brace" today or tomorrow. He will be a GO on the 29th.

I'm thinking they do, but may limit his series.***

It will depend on pain tolerance and swelling.***
