Super glad to see Tigernet displaying a more liberal point

Aug 10, 2020, 2:46 PM

of view these days. The fact that so many folks who have long been opposed to paying players or unionizing college athletes are now so squarely on board with the new proposal by Power Five athletes to form a CFPA (College Football Players Association) just warms my yellow-dog heart.

To paraphrase the great John McClain, "Welcome to the party, pals!"

Basically, the way I see it is if you support college football coming back--and especially if you support #letusplay--then you're a union sympathizer.

Congrats.

Re: they should be paid...

Aug 10, 2020, 3:00 PM

I think they deserve more than that. We need to step it up and give them free food and awesome lounge areas to hangout in. Maybe even consider giving them free clothes with the school logos all over them. They just don't get enough. They should also get admitted to schools easier that most normally wouldn't have gotten into. I am sure the admission standards are much tougher on talented athletes compared to the average person who applies. They have it rough.

Re: they should be paid...

not to mention a degree that could allow them to earn $900k more (on average) in their lifetime than a non-degreed person.

get, too. Dabo is paid in education and gear and housing. Yep.

Funny how the guy on the sidelines with no risk at all is the one paid in actual currency, and the guys risking head injury in the midst of a pandemic get paid in classes and gear.

Jesus. Did you even think before you posted that?

Re: Right--that payment plan is so good, that's what the coaches

Aug 10, 2020, 4:01 PM

They are paid. Dabo just gets more because he has earned that position. He isn't in college. He already did that. He graduated.

flag link military_tech thumb_downthumb_up

Hilarious. Do you think "graduation" = payment?

Aug 10, 2020, 4:16 PM

Do you think players might be able to make a little money if there wasn't CFB? How much would an NFL team pay for TL right now? Or for any number of other players?

But they're all playing for education and gear because the system says they have to. And they're generating billions of dollars that they never see.

If you love capitalism, you'd support the right of CFB players to earn whatever they can. If you're unAmerican, you support a system that caps potential earnings and limits opportunity.

Which one are you, bud?

flag link military_tech thumb_downthumb_up

Re: Hilarious. Do you think "graduation" = payment?

Aug 10, 2020, 4:24 PM

TL is getting a lot and he can leave after this year. His issue would be with the NFL. They require 3 years. Nobody forces players to showcase their skills in college and get hooked up. When he is 21 or so he will get 50 million. He will also have zero debt and some of the best years of his life. He is living the dream. The XFL is coming back though, so the players don't care about free reverything in college can play there coming up straight out of HS and showcase their skills for 50k and never get a degree.

Great idea! Since this should apply to all colleges playing football, Then maybe the football players at schools that are losing money can take out loans to pay their fair share of the debt. That is how capitalism works, but maybe you forgot about that part.

What an unAmerican point of view. CFB players have skills

Aug 10, 2020, 4:19 PM

but no way to be paid for them. How would you feel if you went to work everyday for a billion dollar company and they sent you home with gear and books to read?

This is the chance to end the communistic CFB stranglehold on the free market and have a true capitalistic football system where the players get paid their actual worth.

Who's with me? Or maybe you're just red, through and through.

It’s quite simple I wouldn’t work for that company and no one else would either. You’re hypothetical company wouldn’t exist. Without CFB most of these players wouldn’t sniff college. As far as your trying to frame this argument in American/unAmerican terms you can stick that right up your troll ####. I happily served this country for 20 years. Even defending morans like you. Exactly. Look Tyler Grisham too. He now has a great career in coaching because he made great contacts at Clemson. Look at all of the guys that have degrees and great jobs because they got a degree. Look at Youngblood guarding the White House. He came out with zero debt and has a great job now.

Scholarships not used for tuition, fees, and other qualified expenses such as books have been taxable since 1986 if not earlier. This is not a new thing since 2017. My kids earned good scholarships so I have gone through the pain of figuring out the tax bills.

The 2017 Tax Cuts and Jobs Act changed the rate for the kiddie tax that affects some students that have a large amount of unearned income, including scholarships. However, Congress fixed the issue the following year with a retroactive provision in the SECURE Act.

The IRS publication 970 covers scholarships among other education topics.
