What about the first 4 games Mullens?

Dec 4, 2019, 11:39 AM

We've been dominate in 11 out of 12 games this year not just the last 7.

SOS is determine by preseason rankings and lucky scheduling many years earlier and nothing to do with the quality of the football team being judged. Our best vs worst SOS seasons in the last 5 years did nothing to produce the ranking of best version of Clemson football out of those five years.

Question: if you were a coach with a team in the top four, rank the teams 1 to 4 on who you would not want to face in the semi-final. There's your top four best teams. You shouldn't penalize for something out of a teams control. ie: no one was afraid to play UCF a couple years ago, even though they were undefeated. I bet none of the coaches want to play Clemson in the Semis.

I don't disagree with you, however I also don't disagree with us being at #3 either. The eye test is obviously a factor, but SOS has always been one as well. Imagine if the roles were reversed and we had played LSU's schedule of beating Texas on the road(that win obviously doesn't look nearly as good as it did at the time, but still a solid OOC road win compared to many) Alabama on the road, Florida at home, Auburn at home, and Georgia still to come on a neutral field. Then imagine that LSU had our schedule, and the playoff committee decided to rank LSU #1 over us based on looking better based on the eye test.

Okay, now imagine also if we gave up 37-38 points to Vandy, Ole Miss, and Texas. Would we be passing an “eye” test?

Looks like we still don't have our "Blue Card". Bama would get the benefit of doubt, here, so would other Blue Bloods (in our situation).

It’s all good, we’ll get to finish our season with 3 top-25 wins***

This will all be sorted out on the field. I agree the SOS puts us at 3 for now. I also agree we are probably the team no one wants to play. I think Vegas has it right with Clemson being favored over all the other teams in the mix. We are right where we need to be. Take care of business and we will be right where we need to be January 14 too!
GO TIGERS!!!!!

I agree. Defending champs in the playoff hunt again. Can't complain. If the Tigers are as good as I (and others) think they are, they will go all the way. GooooooTigers!!!!!!!!

I will say this and honestly believe it to be the truth. If win the Natty again this year, all the negative talk about our SOS will go away as if it had never been said, and the ones that has talked the most about our SOS and put us down the most about our SOS, they will be the first to be afflicted with selective memory, and they will be the first to claim that they had been misunderstood bc nothing that they have said was a slight toward Clemson, and like the ones that had believed Clemson to be a legit playoff team, they were in total agreement, and they were even confused by why Clemson lost their #1 ranking bc we were the defending NC's. They have done it every year and have gotten away with not owning up to what they had said before Clemson won, and they will be allowed to get away with it again this year if we win the Natty, that is the media M O and that is the M O that they will stick with to cover each others A S S by claiming they were mis-stated or mis-quoted and completely misunderstood, and their lies continue in the same circle year after year after year!!!!

Think about this ..... If we were still in the BCS era, and

Dec 4, 2019, 1:51 PM

both Ohio State and LSU win this weekend, then we don't get to play for the National Championship. Most likely we would get Oklahoma in the Orange Bowl. Thank goodness for the CFP. But here's a thought, why not take the top 4 teams on Sunday and actually draw them out of a hat to determine who plays who. That way you eliminate the subjectivity of who is #1 vs who is #4. Just say ... these 4 teams are the best 4. Now let's do a draw to see who matches up in the semi-finals?

flag link military_tech thumb_downthumb_up

Holy Cow. You're right. The CFP is designed for this exact scenario.

Did we really believe they would stay away from the exact same shenanigans they were doing with the BCS bull chit. That is how the SEC became the mighty conference, they fixed it to be that way, and that was the real reason that ESECPN threw more $$$$ into the SEC right before the SEC had it's own ESECPN Network!!!!!

That would help take away the thought that they fixed it so that the SEC would have the best advantage to get to the Natty game with how hard they have been promoting for 2 SEC teams in the playoffs, bc that is exactly what I feel they are trying as hard as they can to do, SEC against SEC in the Natty game to assure that a SEC team wins the Natty!!! Go Tigers, and show them that their shenanigans didn't work out so well for them with as hard as they have been trying!!!

You’re correct. The whole “sos” thing is like the military version of ordering creamed chipped beef on toast. The “eye test”... same thing.
Week 1 - secsecsec schools in top ten: Bama2, Ga. 3, Lswho 6, Fla. 8
Week 2 - Bama 2, Ga. 3, Lswho 6, Aub. 10 Fla. 11.
Week 3 - Bama 2, (wins New Mex State and Cooterville), Ga. 3, Lswho 4, Aub 8 (moves up two spots after “quality wins over Tulane & Kent State) Fla 9.
Week 4 - Bama 2 (after unranked “quality win” ) Ol Miss puts 31 points up on them. Ga 3, Lswho 4, Aub 8 (Up two after “quality wins”) Kent State and Texas a&m . A&M let’s them squeak by 28-20. Fla 9.
Week 5 - Bama 2, Ga 3, Lswho 4 (“quality win”) over perennial powerhouse hunter killer Vandy who put 38 up against their steel curtain D. Aub 7 unranked Miss State “quality win”
Fla 9.
Week 6 - Aha Bama1 ( all is right in secsecsec world, at ESECPN and finebeans land)
Clemson 2 ...where we made the horrible mistake of beating NC and the fall begins.
Ga 3, Lswho 5, Aub 7 ( they won and didn’t fall, imagine that)
Fla 10.

Uh nothing to see here....move along..... move along..... “quality wins , strength of schedule and what not, global warming, climate change, humidity and such”

Re: TNET: CFP Chairman on Clemson’s support for being ranked No. 1

Dec 4, 2019, 3:23 PM

Mullens essentally affirmed Dabo's point. The ranking had their genesis at week 1 and continued through week 14. When our Tigers played poorly against UNC, the media conversation changed. Most conferences don't play top tier teams outside the conference except the ACC, so strength of schedule for teams within their conference is subjective based on early ranking polling that I believe anyone would admit is biased. It's a house of cards that depends on the ground floor integrity.

Re: TNET: CFP Chairman on Clemson’s support for being ranked No. 1

Dec 4, 2019, 8:54 PM

Absolutely,Not sure, but I think they had 4-5 SEC teams in the top 10 to start the season. If they lost a game, they wouldn't fall far from the top to make it easier for them to get back to the top if they didn't lose again, UGA rings the loudest bell of that happening!!!

Just a few short years ago we were hoping we could win enough games to be eligible for a decent bowl. Now we are concerned about our position in the final four. Success does create a lot of problems and I hope we can work through it without too much stress.

Would it be OK if Clemson scheduled all SEC teams for a couple of years? That way we could loose a couple of games and have a strong SOS (str of Sched) I betcha the spotes media would holler lowd about something else then. Clemson is playing out of their conference!
