TLDNR - They're screwed, along with Australia.
The real problem they have is they did so well keeping it out, the urgency for vaccines never developed. As such, now that it's obvious they can't keep it out, they're going to get nailed with far more deaths. You saw the same thing in Taiwan, Singapore, and other places. Mostly islands in SE Asia. They all got slammed by delta.
Just simple stuff, that goes back to day 1, means they can't stop it forever. 70% of new cases now in Australia are household transmission. That means 30% are not. So you're locked down, whatever that may mean there. If a person gets it, their entire household likely gets it, not to mention contacts, etc.
The only way you can handle it, and at this point that may not even work, but the only way to stop it would be to ,### test everyone, separate positives from their families in a separate quarantine facility, then send severe cases to the hospital, or otherwise when recovered send quarantined people back home. A simple "lockdown" won't work. And the added loss of freedom required to make it come close to working, won't be tolerated.
Oddly enough, this is exactly what colleges did in the US last year, and it worked. But college kids are far more compliant chasing that degree than other random groups of people.

A few years ago NZ was desperate for medical professionals and recruited docs from the US pretty heavily. Friend of mine was an empty nester and said what the heck. He did not like it. While the scenery is beautiful, turns out Kiwis are not particularly welcoming of outsiders and he felt like he couldn't practice medicine the way he wanted within their rules. Anyhow, they did their year contract, saw the sights, and left.

I remember. But nah, the worst that happened was mask mandates and a poke.
