I'm no legal expert, but I believe that self defense still requires that a person use no more than the required level of self defense.
This is obviously an extreme example, but if a 5 year old child walks up and pushes you then you wouldn't be allowed to punch them in the face as hard as you can. Maybe if the 5 year old grabs ahold of you and won't let go you'd be able to justify whatever would be needed to get them off of you such as getting their hands off from around you, but you still wouldn't be able to punch or kick them.
I haven't seen the Joe Mixon video in a long time, but it's not as if that girl was any threat to him. He could've walked away, called for someone to separate them, or if needed pushed her off of him. From what I recall he responded by knocking her out. It doesn't excuse her actions, but his response to the situation went beyond what was called for IMO.

It probably depends on the state as to the self defense law. One issue is probably that if you charged him, legally you probably have to charge her too, and I'd bet that's why nothing happened.

The "nowadays" idea is the problem. It is incumbent upon people to think about situations rationally, instead of having programmed reactions and running around like chickens with their heads cut off.
For example, if a professor reads aloud from Huckleberry Finn in literature class, so he have to resign?
