I was in high school, in tiny "A" class in South Carolina, just a team making ANY field goal was a rarity, and a big deal. It would have been beyond anybody's Wildest Wet Dream to make one from beyond 50 yards. They would have built him a statue on the spot he kicked it from.

I think they kick off tees in HS if they want to, at least that used to be the case in the easily 2000s
|

Back in the early 80s teams couldn’t even kick PATs. Went for two all the time.

Yep, I remember the shoelaces under the cleats too. We had a soccer style my senior year in 1974, everybody thought that was crazy until they saw him nail a 45 yarder. After that, it was the end of the straight shoelace kicker.

after he hit that 63 yarder (straight-on kicker, by the way), someone in the media actually had the gall to say that Dempsey had an unfair advantage because he only had half a foot. You couldn't MAKE that stuff up.

Yeah, our coach never trusted the kicker to make a 30 yarder, so he wouldn’t get a long opportunity. Maybe we need to offer that kid a scholarship!?
