I can't remember - was Wes Goodwin the DC in the bowl game last year or was Brent Venables?

Anyone doubting Wes needs to look at the bowl game. I think their thinking may change.

I didn't have many doubts or worries, but I did as you suggested and watched the complete game just now, since I haven't seen it other than when it was live.
The D looked good, but not quite as good on some plays. As an example, we were still very susceptible to TE routes in the flats and behind the LBs, caused mainly by blitzing LBs and CBs. That style of D is a 2-edged sword that I'm willing to live with, so long as we have an offense that can score enough points to cover the inopportune D-calls when being aggressive. We did get the pay call set sooner than when Goodwin was in the booth and Venables was on the field.
What I really didn't like was the O-line. When you can't move the ball on the ground against a 3-3-6 D, you're not much of an O-line. We got next to no push all night. There were some zone-blocked seal plays that worked - including one sprint draw to Shipley for a TD that looked great and even included good blocking by one of the WRs, but as a rule, the O-line was not very effective in the run game. Will Putnam was a noticeable problem. Iowa State used the 3-3-6 line gaps to send the extra safety a lot and it was more than we could handle at times.
Other than the interception, I thought DJ actually played a pretty good game and looked considerably more mobile than he did earlier in the year. EVen though the coaches limited (eliminated) the deep throws, he seemed to do well with the short stuff for a change.
Going back to the D, I hope Mario Goodrich got a game ball - he was outstanding!
Overall, I don't know how we'll compare to earlier D teams, but I'm not worried and we might be surprised with the best CFB D ever!

a 3 - 3 - 6 defense ??
I think that is 12 men. No wonder we struggled to move the ball.

I definitely have my doubts

Even after that bowl game. The defense did ok I guess, but they weren't exactly going against the 2019 LSU BAYOU BENGALS. Iowa State was an average team at best. Goodwin will not be as good as Venables. But he might be pretty good. He's just still unproven. I know he spent years in the NFL. So what? So did Keven Steele. So I'm definitely uneasy with him as DC. But I'm also trying to be optimistic. It's one game. So we will have to see how he does in his first several games. His first real test will be at Wake then the following week vs NC St. We should get a pretty good idea as what kind of DC he will be by then. I will say this. I'm more concerned about the OC. Dabo should have hired from outside instead of hiring within. Offense has gotten stale over the years and needs fresh blood. Venables hired the OC that Dabo should have hired. But we will see.

I was chalking up your post as eeeh it’s his opinion even though I disagreed, until you wrote Dabo “Should” have hired from outside. Man has no one started to just trust Dabos decisions by now?
I thought of the hire about like this. I’m not a coach at all and I have no clue who to hire because I’m not in the college coaches circles. Dabos always thinking ahead. Just trust him. If we fall back to 8-9 wins over the next few seasons then yeah we can all start to question. But let’s just wait and see for now.

A lot of his defense will depend on our own offense. We stink it up like last year without a QB change and we will be what we’d all like to see.

BV left his team at Clemson so fast when Oklahoma came to visit him, it was like he just found out that his Tiger team had a deadly plague, and never looked back!!!
I have often wondered if he would have left his Clemson team if they were about to play a playoff game, or a NC game. I'm betting he would have stayed to get notch in his resume!!!!

Brent Venables left Clemson and took the Head coaching job at Oklahoma because he thought Clemson was not going to be good this year??? If he thought they might be a contender he would have stayed?? You mean tripling his salary to 7m per year had nothing to do with it?? It is too early in the day for you to be drinking that heavily. He will not have the D at Ok this year that he would have had at Clemson. He has not recruited the D at Oklahoma for next year that has been recruited at Clemson. Oklahoma will not be playing for a national championship anytime soon.

Since Brent Venables is gone, there is really no point in displaying any regret at his leaving. Wish him well and get behind Wes Goodwin. You can regret it after the season ends, if you want.
