I believe it is Coach "Tiger Bob" Smith. This predates Whitey by a good bit, I believe.

Don Wade, Bob Jones, Frank Howard, Banks McFadden ...

He was a great man, and a stellar athlete in his day. His sister taught me 2nd grade in Great Falls.

I was guessing about it being Bob Smith. I didn't know Wade, but I did know Smith who was on staff my Frosh. yr., and Wade looked like a younger guy with the same build, so that was my reasoning. Thanks for the info. I don't know who the guy on the other end is, either (way before my time). Jones and McFadden were on staff my Frosh year, though, and they were around the program my entire time at Clemson.

But on game day

It was coat and tie. Yes, this pre-dates Whitey Jordan's coaching time. He might have been playing then.

I was thinking the same thing.

Coach Howard wore suit and tie, a hat too!
Even in the early 60's we all dressed up in suits for the games, women in dresses or suits, high heels and lots of times hats too.

Yep, and the ladies usually had ribbons or flowers

The guy on the left appears to have dirt on his pants. Maybe he had been prepping the field prior to the photo? Great Picture!!

Notice the players in the background...headed up the hill back toward Fike. And also the tree on the hill. That's a fairly young Death Valley.

Not bragging but i interviewed 3 of those Men as sports

Oct 30, 2013, 9:52 PM

writer for The TIGER student newspaper in mid 60's..and they knew their 3 yards & a cloud of dust football..something our Boys could use now & then IMO.

GoTiGERs!

Personally I still love the 3 yds and a cloud over the fast games of today. An occasional bomb mixed in w/ a pounding run game is what I crave......but w/ recruiting being what it is, I fear this type of offense would turn away many players. A shame imho....

Coach Howard generally wore short sleeve dress shirts

Oct 31, 2013, 6:55 AM

with ties and a hat during games in warmer weather and a coat otherwise.

He, also, rarely roamed the sidelines, Dabo-style, preferring to remain close to the 50 to watch field action. Thus, the staff and team knew where he'd be any time during the games.

Even during practices, I rarely recall seeing him without his customary brimmed hat, which was typically worn by men in those days, although in his earlier years, I know he wore some type of baseball cap as shown.

Is the coach on the far right Art Baker? He was on the Clemson staff in the early sixties, then became HC at Furman, Citadel, and ECU I believe. It certainly looks like him?
