Last week, someone asked about streaming games...

Oct 3, 2022, 9:26 AM

while tailgating. We have been using a satellite (Dish Tailgater) for years and we have never had any problems. As I am sure most of you know by now, when folks arrived at the game Saturday morning, they learned that Dish had discontinued offering ESPN, ESPN2, the ACC Network, and the $EC Network without any kind of advance notification. Direct TV did so as well. So now, thousands are unable to access games on those channels.

In light of the above, since we had a Roku TV, we decided to give mobile streaming a go and watch YouTube TV just to see if it would work. Everyone I have ever talked to about this has recommended not doing it because the cell service in and around the parking areas at Clemson is so poor on game days. Nonetheless, we decided to give it a shot anyway. After a few connectivity issues, we finally managed to get to connect.

While the picture quality wasn't nearly as good as using an HD receiver, it did work (somewhat). As the lots got more and more crowded throughout the day, we did experience a lot of "buffering" issues that interrupted the signal.

That said, we are going to try it again in a couple of weeks using the Verizon Internet Gateway box. Hoping it works. I'd sure rather pay Verizon $30.00 a month and access my YouTube service through Verizon internet rather than paying Dish Network $120 per month for their sports package that no longer includes ESPN, ESPN2, the ACC Network, or the $EC Network.

Dish restored ESPN this AM.

That's what I heard...

but we're still going to give the mobile streaming a shot because of the price difference.

I checked on Saturday.

I’m on Verizon. I can usually stream ok until a couple hours before game time. This week I lost useable internet around 2:30. No texts. No email. Randomly I’d get a text come through but it would be like an hour late.

A friend is on AT&T. He had no trouble streaming all the way up to game time and had useable internet through the game inside the stadium.

This seems to be true every week. If you have Verizon I’d recommend a dish…or change providers.

I am a Verizon customer...

and I have similar issues at home. The Verizon service in my neighborhood is abysmal. Verizon gave me a network extender/signal booster and while that is an improvement, when the power is interrupted, we're back to square one with shoddy cell service. The people in the neighborhood with AT&T or T-Mobile have no issues whatsoever. All things considered, I think I am about to make the change.

I don't know why so many people seem to be married to Verizon...

They are terrible in my home area and the most expensive. I have been with Consumer Cellular for almost 10 years, and have never had any problems. It runs on the ATT network, very reasonable priced and their tech support is in the USA. Three phones cost about $75 per month.

DirecTV did not lose Disney networks this weekend. It has

We have the verizon box. The issue you are going to run into is with data. Even with the 300gb limit plan that is nearly $200 a month, it limits your speed after 50gb of data usage. Then after you reach your data allowance it is $10 per 5gb of data used.

We have both verizon box and youtubetv at home and we used 200gb watching college football in one weekend on youtube tv.

We're not using FIOS...

We would be using the simpler 5G conventional speed that has no fees or data caps.
