Sexton and Travis were terrible for their first year. It was like some weird iteration of that old TV show “Fantasy Island” character Tatoo. ‘The plane … the plane.’

Travis: The mask … the mask. Gheezh.

Now, Sexton and Travis have ascended into average territory. Long long long way from getting to Mt. Rush-more, though.

Tucker would kill it radio.

Xxxxxxxx

In other news (excerpt from US News & World Report … March 23, 2023). Some car mfgers have dropped AM radio in their EVs.

(MA Senator Ed) Markey surveyed 20 automakers, finding that eight have stopped offering AM radio in their EVs, including Ford, Mazda, BMW, Volkswagen and Volvo. But while it sounds dramatic, the problem has a reasonable solution. Stellantis took steps to remedy the issue by planning to move the radio receivers away from EV components in next-generation vehicles and said that it uses shielded components to reduce interference. Volkswagen complained, saying that the solutions bring extra weight, which impacts range.

That's the weird thing, because of their carriage fees, Fox News is printing money. I still think heads have to roll after what happened. But they would really have to make an effort to not make money unless cable and satellite outlets refused to keep paying said fees (about $2 per subscriber per month - way more than other cable news outlets). It'll be curious to see what happens - whether they'll try to keep doing what they're doing but without their biggest star or whether they'll try to return to some form of news reporting.

Lemon has needed to go for a good long while. You get the definite sense that dude is unbearable once the cameras stop rolling. He's pretty intolerable even on the air.

I'd love to see an end to Infotainment, or at least put a great big INFOTAINMENT sticker on it for the duration of their broadcasts so they can't stand in that murky middle ground between newsman and spin doctor and make people think what they're doing is actual news. "Unbiased" is a pretty hard bar to clear - we're all biased in some way - but this partisan propaganda warfare the cable networks are doing is incredibly destructive and a huge part of why we're so divided right now.

Re: Wow, Tucker’s gone.

4

Apr 24, 2023, 1:12 PM

This is going to hurt both Fox and MAGA a lot more than they realize. Tucker had something, IMHO, that no other anchor at Fox had: affability.

Whatever else he is, the dude is likeable, charismatic, and extremely persuasive. He could say awful stuff in such a manner it put all manner of sugar around the harsh medicine, dance right up to the edge of stuff like race war or justifying sedition or, you know, claiming with a straight face the election had been stolen. And he'd never quite say it.

The other Fox hosts, in contrast, are abrasive. They're disdainful, cynical shills and it shows; they're just grown-up high school bullies. But Tucker wasn't like that.

Tucker isn't going to be a good fit at the likes of OAN or Newsmax either. The dude is posh, highbrow, a sophisticant. He fit Fox well. One thing Fox brings to the table is extremely high production values. In contrast Newsmax and OAN are amateur-hour Youtube-studio-in-a-garage-type productions. They just look cheap and tacky. Whatever else you can say about Fox, they sparkle. Tucker would look as out of place at OAN or Newsmax as King Charles would at a goat rodeo.

They can put somebody in Tucker's seat, but they have no one (that I've seen, anyhow) who can remotely replace him. The dude was #1-by-a-mile on their network for a reason.

flag link military_tech thumb_downthumb_up

As far as I'm concerned, this is all karma.

3

Apr 24, 2023, 1:32 PM

The communications exposed in discovery confirmed what we knew all along (and what his close relationship with Hunter Biden suggested) -- that Tucker was much more moderate and level-headed in private than his online personality suggested. But, he sold his soul for ratings. I'm guessing Tucker's position at the company gave him a ton of production autonomy, but because this ended up coming back to haunt Rupert for potentially billions, Rupert had handed Tucker enough rope to hang himself, and he did.

As you said, anything else but FOX is a step down for Tucker's potential, but where does he go? I doubt Trump touches him after his private comments were revealed. I doubt Tucker goes for the step back to Newsmax or OAN.

My guess? He runs for office. It's what you do after you wash out everywhere else.

Re: As far as I'm concerned, this is all karma.

Tucker was less ideological than most outraged lefties had perceived him to be.

Lefties seethed over Tucker’s frequent expose (expose-A is what I mean) of shady dealings by Democrats; consequently the lefties were blind to Tucker’s frequent shows that were critical of non-lefty happenings.

Tucker blasted Sydney Powell, for example.

As far as Tucker running for office … don’t tell me that he’s fallen THAT far.

1

Apr 24, 2023, 2:03 PM [ in reply to Re: Wow, Tucker’s gone. ]

Newsman and OAN are indeed primitive broadcasts. I can’t make myself watch OAN; admittedly haven’t tried for a couple of years.
As for Newsmax, I keep waiting for Garth and Wayne to get a prime time slot.

Fox News was similar to Newsmax back in 1996. (I mean to Wayne’s World.). Tony Snow was a good soldier. Hannity and Colmes was an awful imitation of CNN’s Crossfire.

Because CNN got too comfortable with being the king of cable news, Fox News had time to grow and refine their act.

Kind of like how K-Mart got lazy, allowing backward WalMart to get their act together.

(*). With Fox News accelerating their own demise, I suspect that this will lead to more viewers for NewsMax. If we see Bud Lite sales take off again, it will because conservatives (like me) will need some help to make watching NewsMax endurable.

badge-donor-05yr.jpg flag link military_tech thumb_downthumb_up

Re: Aren;t you a big Trump fan?

Apr 24, 2023, 11:57 PM

Conservative means thinking for one’s self and assessing those events &/or thinkings which promote freedom, equal opportunity (as opposed to equal outcomes), protection and nurturing of the young & disabled / feeble, fiscal responsibility, and individual responsibility.

There are a LOT of phony ‘conservatives’ out there who are actually crony capitalist thieves (re Mitch McConnell, #### Cheney and daughter Liz, Lindsey Graham, etc.).

True conservatives such as Rand Paul, Ted Cruz, Jim Jordan, & Ron Johnson, espouse the core values that are in the first sentence.

Trump also espouses these values … except for the fiscal responsibility issue (which is big). However, Trump has the stones to challenge the in-the-tank media outlets (including Fox News … which led to Rupert Murdoch’s all out war on Trump) -&- Trump dared to address P.R.China’s predatory trade practices with the USA, and to challenge PRC’s dangerous escalation of war talk against Taiwan.

Since none from among Rand Paul, Ted Cruz, Jim Jordan, or Ron Johnson are running for POTUS, Trump looks like the best of what’s left.

Best regards to you.

2

Apr 24, 2023, 1:48 PM [ in reply to Me guessin' that Tucker's "parting ways" was a Fox News ]

The thing is, carnival barking is starting to get expensive. Both sides of the cable news spectrum have a huge amount invested in convincing their watchers that they are the ones with legit grievance and Are The Real Victims Here.

The problem is, they're having to go further and further to satisfy the seemingly bottomless thirst of their audiences for validation. Fox knowingly committed outright defamation with the Dominion thing, and you tune into CNN or MSNBC with a lot of anchors and you'd think you were listening to an Liberal Guilt symposium. CNN and MSNBC still have solid newsrooms - Fox dismantled theirs, it wasn't profitable enough - but CNN/MSNBC's primetime Infotainers are carnival barkers themselves; they're so durn biased they've become an outright propaganda arm for the DNC, and constructing an erroneous picture through selective omission is in some ways even more pernicious than Fox's outright MAGA shilling because it isn't as overt. The difference between what CNN/MSNBC do and what the likes of actual newscasts from BBC and NPR do has gotten so stark it's startling.

But you've been abroad and seen it with your own eyes: propaganda is often extremely effective at first...but over time it generates diminishing returns. After awhile nobody believes your bullsh!t anymore.

The sooner serious people start tuning out of cable news, the better. America's brain needs to start functioning again.

Today was a good day, anyhow, on that front. Hopefully there will be more of these to come.

flag link military_tech thumb_downthumb_up

Mostly agree - that's why I rarely watch any of it -

2

Apr 24, 2023, 2:02 PM

particularly the "opinion" shows. Every blue moon I'll watch Brett Baier and his 6:00pm News broadcast - usually when some particular big event happens (e.g. Russia invades Ukraine etc..). I think he is about the most fair guy that Fox News has - tries to walk an honest line even if it is coming from a conservative POV.

These days I pretty much get my news from many different Internet sources. Cable News is anything but and checking the same news story through multiple sources tends to eventually give an accurate picture.

I really hate the state of today's journalism - the constant narrative and counter-narrative pushing for team blue or team red is part of the reason our Government is so dis-functional where no one is ever held to account.

Fox would not have had the problem had they / their show hosts not used the term “fraud.”

Dominion had a pile of embarrassing information (remember the leaks of Dominion’s internal executive level communications in which they acknowledged big problems with their machines) and one categorically undeniable case of a huge flaw in an election in which Dominion machines were integral to that particular election (I.e., the DeKalb County, GA primary race for a county commissioner seat … Michelle Long Spears).

The use of “fraud” to describe Dominion’s problem was Fox’s problem.

Dominion was smart to settle. By so doing, Dominion avoided the blowback for when Fox would have gotten (via the discovery process) the platform to expose those internal Dominion acknowledgements about their poor voting machines.

From what I’ve gleaned from posts by TNet’s liberals in which clips of Tucker’s show had been provided, it seems that Tucker’s gig needed video material to optimize his program.

(I haven’t watched Fox News in ~ 4 or 5 years, so I’m dependent upon others to bring examples of Mother Tucker’s activities to my attention.)

Glenn Beck … I listen to his show on occasion while driving. Glenn Beck was a radio jock long before he had that TV gig on Fox News and got the Tea Party movement going. Beck does very well without needing visual aids to get his points across.

Comparing what I’ve learned about Tucker via TNet vs Glenn Beck, Tucker had more time to organize his show around documentable facts. Beck, on the other hand, gets facts mixed up more often than he should and therefore is guilty of misinforming his audience on occasion.

(*). Tucker and radio may not be a good marriage. Tucker needs the video angle, IMO.
