Good for him. A Republican with a spine. Which is rarer, a Republican with a spine or unicorn?

One with a spine would represent the will of those that elected him.
You realize the only reason he and other pubs “speak out”, is to get on the Sunday news circuit, right? Politic long?

Yeah it takes a lot of guts to do what crazed trumpsters want you to do and threaten you and your family if you go against their psycho leader. Standing up for right is to be admired.

They elected him to fulfill the obligations as their US Congressman and all that goes with it. It's too bad that so many don't understand what comes with that gig. Apparently he does and good for him. Bodes well for getting back to debating in these chambers and tackling mounting issues instead of kicking all the cans down the road for courts and executive orders.

My dad called Rice's office last week, expecting to just

leave a message on the comment line. He got a real person, however, and they spoke. He just told them that he was very disappointed in the fact that Rice had supported Trump's shenanigans since the election. He told them he felt Rice knew better than the story Trump was pushing and was being irresponsible in going along with it. He also told the person that if Rice was that quick to dismiss the votes of four states full of people, that he clearly didn't care about the voice of the people. And that if he didn't care about their votes, then he knows he wouldn't care about my dad's vote. And for that reason, he would never be able to vote for him. He told her that he felt what Trump was doing was a danger to our democracy and entire system. The phone went dead and my dad thought oh well she hung up on me. I guess she'd heard enough. But a few minutes later my dad's phone rang. And it was Rice's office calling him back and the woman said she just wanted to tell him that she didn't hang up and to assure him that every commment would be passed on the the congressman.
This phone call took place before the events of January 6, 2021. And although I am very liberal, my dad has voted conservative more often than not. I think the only times I know of that he voted for a democrat for president were in 1976 (Jimmy Carter's first run), and 2012 (Barack Obama's second term). I don't think he voted in 2016 because he did not want to vote for Trump and could not make himself vote for Hilary. His favorite candidate for president that he voted for was McCain in 2008. He really really liked John McCain. And of course he voted for the Bush's, Reagan, Nixon. He will tell me to this day that Nixon was doing a great job as president, until Watergate. Well, other than that Mrs. Lincoln......

Your dad voted for Nixon, Carter, Reagan ,Obama. Forgive me but I’m trying to get an idea of exactly where he would stand on issues. That’s some list.

Carter and Obama were the only democrats. I think

he could not resist voting for a southerner for president when Carter ran in 1976, and my dad was young. He did not vote Carter for re-election, primarily becuase the economy was a shambes. He did think Carter was a very good man. As for Obama, I think he felt Obama had done a good job first term and it also took some nudging from me, because my dad liked Romney a lot also. He liked Obama, but I think his conservative lean would have him voting for Romney, if not for me. I think I campaigned enough to get him to vote for Obama for me.
The rest were republicans. He is a very even keel person, very little drama, and prides himself on not being an automatic for either party. He is on the conservative side fiscally, but believes the republicans could lighten up a bit on social issues. I was surprised he called Rice's office, but I think that is how fed up he was with Trumps antics since the election and how dangerous he thought Trump's behavior was.
Like I said, he was a huge fan of John McCain and if you remember, McCain would cross the aisle from time to time. McCain wasn't a robot.

That’s just a list of polar opposites. I try to sincerely understand why people vote as they do. I understand liberals voting for liberals. I understand conservatives voting conservative. I’m always puzzled at the undecided voters a week before the election. The contrast is so clear these days that I sincerely can not understand an undecided voter.

For some, character and integrity matter. So do I understand that you will vote the most despicable person so long as they align with you on issues?

Well,if you're really interested in that, one hunch I have

is the following. And keep in mind, I'm never an undecided. I am always democrat. But I think a lot of the undecideds are just moderate by nature and they don't have a particular single issue that is their ride or die. Therefore, they are tied to a party at all costs.
My dad has always been a fiscal conservative and believes people should be responsible in that realm and pull thier own weight. He is for less governmetn. As for social issues, however, he is pretty liberal, with the exception of abortion. He hates the thought of abortion, but he understands why people feel they have a right to make choices aobut their bodies. In short, I think he wishes it didn't exist, but he is not going to be all militant on it and vote a single party every time because of it. I guess he feels that's a Supreme Court issue and no politician is going to do anything about it. All other social issues, he believes conservatives are too hung up on and up tight on. He believes they have turned off many minority groups for different reasons and that has not served the republican party well. He's a Christian, but that doesn't necessarily determine his every vote. And it certainly doesn't necessarily equate to Republican. For example, Biden, Carter and Obama, all democrats were probably all more in tune with their faith than repubicans like Nixon, Reagan and Trump. Just a hunch there by me. I don't put myself in a postition to judge someone else and how in tune they are with their faith. Just a hunch.
With many undecideds, there is a hodge podge of issues and feelings. And I don't think any particular issue is so urgent to them to make them an automatic for either party. I wonder if many of them are low drama people like my dad. That might have a play in it as well.
