So not even 3 months and they’re going to the Trump plan?

Apr 7, 2021, 11:30 PM

Wow. That was fast.

Man Biden us going to be demonized on Twitter, in Hollywood and in the press. SNL will have a field day. Tougher enforcement, attacking sanctuary cities, separating children and building a wall. What. A. Monster.

Perhaps you guys will shut up about open borders now.

BTW, I am taking the wall talk with a large grain of salt - we will see.

flag link military_tech thumb_downthumb_up

Yes - if most of that happens (I'm taking all of it with a

grain of salt) - I will mostly shut up about open borders.

As an aside: It is insane that Harris has been put in charge of the WH response to the current crisis at the border - but she hasn't made an official statement about it or visited it.

Apr 8, 2021, 9:25 AM [ in reply to Re: Well this is going to get interesting ]

admit that your four years of demonizing the former president and his policies was nonsense. That he was right all along and you were wrong. That you were brain-dead zombies responding to Outrage Incorporated whenever they told you that you were outraged. As evidence, I point to your response...where's the outrage? Biden is Trump 2.0 on the border!?! UNACCEPTABLE! What? Oh...no...this is still about Trump supporters and their problems. Oh, okay.

Are we allowed to say that Biden, just like Trump, is proposing bad border policy?

I voted for Biden and have been pretty supportive of what he's done so far, but he is not making the right decisions when it comes to the border.

I think the problem is less that he made bad decisions from the start and more that he is doubling down on solutions that are proven to not work. A big problem in my opinion is Title 42 expulsions. Expelling immigrants immediately to the other side of the border allows for repeated attempts, driving up arrests. Expelling families but not unaccompanied kids causes the families to self-separate and send kids alone. Why persist with this obviously flawed strategy?

This article from the Cato institute goes into detail about some possible solutions, and these ideas make a lot more sense than continuing with current border policy and/or building the wall.

Re: So it was mere coincidence

Apr 8, 2021, 12:20 PM

No, the main reason seems to be an increase in repeat crossings, which is most likely because everyone other than unaccompanied children is turned away from the border due to Title 42 restrictions. Looking at the data, without these repeat crossers, the first few months of fiscal year 2021 would look nearly identical to fiscal year 2019 before the pandemic.

https://twitter.com/David_J_Bier/status/1374005686451978244?s=20

The logic that Biden operated on initially was "if we keep expelling as many crossers as possible, we won't get overwhelmed." Now that theory has been conclusively falsified. So what's the new theory to justify continuing expulsions?

Re: So it was mere coincidence

The problem is these enforcement only policies have been tried and failed over and over again. I agree that specifically Trump's MPP were better than the Title 42 restrictions that replaced them, as they at least gave people a court date, however there were a lot of other problems with those laws as well. The camps where people stayed were crowded and often unsafe, and the majority of asylum seekers lacked any legal representation (I think the estimate I saw was around 7.5%). The lack of counsel, combined with the danger and insecurity that individuals face in border towns, have made it nearly impossible for anyone subject to MPP to successfully win asylum. This is backed up by the numbers that show a huge drop in successful asylum claims after the implementation of this policy.

We have also developed alternatives to detention that range from approximately 91-99% compliance for asylum seekers returning for their court dates. These also cost about 7% daily of what detention costs. In 2019 ICE only had 1 active ATD program known as the Intensive Supervision Appearance Program III. If the US could successfully implement more of these programs, we could allow asylum claimants into the country without having to make a choice between detention and unmonitored release.

Imprisoning repeat crossers might lower the overall numbers, but now the US taxpayers are responsible for subsidizing their stay in a US jail. It seems the easier solution is to create a more streamlined way for immigrants to have their asylum claims heard, rather than turning them all away at the border.

Ha ha. Uuuuh, no. Actually, you're not allowed to do that.

Apr 8, 2021, 11:16 AM [ in reply to Re: Perhaps we'll shut up!?! Lol. How about perhaps you'll ]

You're not allowed to review Biden's policies and casually remark that..."Hmm...I believe this policy may in fact be ill-informed...I would recommend a different course of action..."

Nooooooo no no no no. THAT'S not what we've heard over the past four years in response to similar policies.

I want to hear the outrage.
I want protests.
I want wall-to-wall, 24 hour coverage of this xenophobe and his racist, hate-filled approach to our poor neighbors to the south.
I want AOC crying at the border (I actually did see a headline where Ilhan Omar "blasted" Biden...so that's a good start!).
I want condemnation of Joe Biden as the soulless monster he apparently is from the same people who condemned Trump.
And I want it for a straight four years, nonstop.

I'll hang up and listen...for four years...

If any wall construction happens, any no matter how small, every liberal democrat in the country needs to shut their fcking mouth for the next four years.
