Sadly, Covid (& possibly Weight) took my former B-I-L yesterday.

Jan 17, 2022, 7:58 PM

As we know Covid is preying on not only those over 65, as he was, but those of any age who are overweight and/or obese.

Why?

Well.. obesity, fat tummies & generally being overweight are outward signs of one probably having Insulin Resistance in their cells where the fat & sugar storage processes have been affected..and over the years various organs are harmed & are not working efficiency..and thus the virus attacks the fat cells that are making IL6 which is a powerful inflammatory molecule. Being overweight in any form where it may affect your organs, brain or heart is usually a slow process over many years of misuse until your body is unknowingly weakened internally and when attacked by a deadly virus it’s deadly.

Jimmy, my former Brother-in-Law, was a kind & good soul who I liked very much and it’s possible his age (78) and maybe even his diet & exercise habits in his later years may have been factors..but still I am very pizzed he had to die such a horrible lonely death after being taken off a respirator b/c his organs simply failed him.

PLEASE, Please be aware of what foods you eat, the quality & quantity and how much you exercise.

Don’t get your Carbs from a box, bag or bar code.

Fat is good for you vs SUGAR since the brain needs fat.. and fat intake will not make you fat per-say but high sugar intake definitely will.

“Limit or avoid” these high in sugar or fructose items, such as: alcohol, ice cream, salad dressings, BBQ sauces, Ketchup, Breads, Donuts, Honey, Fruit Juices, Cola’s, Candy, Cookies, Pies, Cakes, White Bread & Flour Products, Many Dry Cereals, Potatoes (and No french fries), White Rice, Sweetened Ice Tea, Etc. I know, about impossible for me too. ?? And, try not to snack as much since it fires up your body & organs again and they have to call in the insulin again to take fat & sugar to their awaiting cells.

Think about FASTING as I have started doing recently (missing a meal, breakfast being the easiest for me) for 14-16 hours total after your last evening meal. You can start doing it one day a week or several days a week and you’ll be surprised as to not being hungry til about 12-2 pm..and if you do get hungry have a few walnuts (good fat) & water and hang on.

Remember, the word “Break-Fast” means you are about to break your fast from the last (evening) meal which was about 12 hours ago..so going another 2, 4 or 6 hours not eating isn’t gonna kill you but it can make big differences in your internal organ, brain & hormonal health over the long run.

Intermittent Fasting allows the body & organs to have more time to heal, to lower inflammation levels, cleanse itself, reset, burn off toxins, BURN Fat and to feel less bloated, leaner & meaner.

Insulin dictates how the fuel (sugar & fat) is used in the body and if it fills up the cell with fat & sugar as it should and then if this mechanism is altered whereby the Liver doesn’t know what to do, it (the Liver) pumps out more glucose to the cells that are already full of fat & sugar, as they should be, and with this backlog and the liver not realizing what’s happening it (the liver) continues this erratic process of pumping more fat & sugar to the full cell with no luck and it (the cell) is now really “resisting” the Insulin or catalyst used to make this process work..thus this failure or glitch in the normal process is called “Insulin Resistance” which causes a Diabetes condition where one has to be given insulin to restart the normal process.

Insulin Resistance is THE Root Cause of virtually every illness to mankind, thru the various processes of Inflammation.

80% of Americans are metabolically Unfit. 70% are overweight while 30-50% of those are considered Obese!

Fat tummies are an outward sign that one may have hormonal problems, and changing hormones in men & women turn the fat cells in the belly into machines that deregulate your body’s ability to resist inflammation.

Sex Hormones (Estrone & Testosterone) tell the fat where to go store itself to be used as energy, and due to insulin Resistance they don’t know what to do so they head for the belly. Do you have a beer gut?!

Oh, the GUT is the Control Center of your body and keeping those little living organisms in it happy with probiotic foods like healthy sugarless yogurt or sauerkraut is beneficial and they will repay you handsomely!

Oh, as your belly expands X-rays have shown your brain shrinks!

So, Keep your Insulin levels low thru good diet & exercise since there’s proof that Alzheimer’s, Fatty Liver Disease & Diabetes are due to high insulin levels..with SUGAR being the main culprit.

Remember..FOOD is your friend AND Enemy and eating wrong can not be fixed by exercise alone!

Lastly, we are fat as a Nation because we have been blessed by an abundance of food that’s readily available and at reasonable prices and thus we eat, eat & eat and exercise very little overall. The Cavemen would have loved our easy quick way to gather food but it would have caused him to die fat and thus we wouldn’t be here as his ancestors!

And to believe I left a Pre-Med major at Clemson and changed to History.

R.I.P. Jimmy ~

Very sorry about your BIL. I agree that obesity is making severe covid & death from covid more likely. That's one thing that's made Covid more deadly in America than, say, Japan or parts of Asia where the population is much less obese.

One question I would ask is was your BIL vaccinated? Most people his age are vaccinated, although I know that's not a guarantee of survival from an infection.

Always heard and thought skipping (fasting) breakfast- not a good idea as it starts your metabolism for the day. Probably not the meal I would want to miss.

That's the old school way of thinking to "start your day off right with a good meal" but thinking that it helps to start your metabolism is incorrect.

LBB is correct that the healthiest thing someone can do for their metabolism is to adopt some sort of fasting.

You are welcome to keep eating breakfast if you would like, but that may mean it's healthy to start eating your dinner around 3:00 or 4:00 in the afternoon.

I am not perfect with it, but I try to do 8 hours of eating and 16 straight of fasting each day.

I typically eat for the first time each day around 11:30 or noon.

I have replaced breakfast with drinking a larger than normal amount of water when I wake up in the morning.

I feel much better for it.

Sorry for your loss!

Great reminder for what we should do to protect and enhance our health.

I've been injured and can run/workout like I used to for 7 years now. As such, my diet is crap. Way too much sugar. You note is a wake up call for me as I need to say enough is enough.

Jan 17, 2022, 8:25 PM

But having both conditions in one might be a bit much to handle. It’s like you can be fat, eat crappy, never exercise and they have a pill for all of that but if you combine smoking with it, you’re just screwed.

Sorry to hear about your B-I-L.

100% sound advice, and as hard as those lifestyle changes sound, I promise you it can be done.

I grew up in the 70s and 80s drinking sugar-filled Kool-Aid and converted to soft drinks and sweet tea as I reached adulthood. I ate lots of bread, rice, potatoes, and pre-packaged foods from a box. I also ate my fair share of sweets when offered.

At age 50, I decided I wanted to live well past 60. Over the next few years I made major changes in my eating habits (Bill nailed most of them in this post) and have done most, if not all, of the fasting you hear about.

I lost about 140 pounds, lowered my A1c from the 7-9 range to the mid to high 5s, and was taken off my diabetic medications by my doctor. The rest of my bloodwork is in excellent shape.

It was (is) not easy. There is a book by Jason Fung called the Obesity Code that changed my life. Dr Fung is a kidney doctor, and his common sense (easy to read) approach helped me get started. You can find it on-line.

Sorry for this long response, but I enjoy talking (typing) about my journey. I might get hit by a bus tomorrow, but I'm living a lot healthier today.

Go Tigers

Good tip. If all you can do is walk, then walk. It will start to bring your hormones back in line. It's a easy place to start if you've been on the couch for awhile. I started last March. WalkInf turned to jogging. Lifted every now and again. Jumped some rope. Dropped 80lbs. I'm old ish. Got up to 20 miles a week. My diet was good like the poster mentioned.
