33 Years and Counting.

Feb 28, 2019, 2:06 PM

At 5:00 PM on Feb. 28, 1986, I closed the door to my office and marched out of the building to enter the land of retirement. Well, it was semi-retirement because sometime later I became an associate of Fort/AIC Consultants for a special job. My job as a research engineer began in Stoneville, MS, and then to Belle Glade, FL, and finally in 1955. to Clemson where wild horses could never bulge me. Even some very tempting offers could not sway me to leave Clemson, my home town for the last 64 years.

I had infomed my associates that when I retired, I was going out in style. Rather than bore you with the long version I knew most of you would definitely appreciate my boring you with the short version. On that day long ago, rather than driving my old reliable pickup to work. my wife had the honor of escorting me in the family car. In addition to my usual briefcase i had concealed my tux in a carry-on bag. About one hour before my departure that afternoon, I closed my office door and changed into my tux. Now that I was clad in approptiate attire, the staff came to my office for their farewell and good riddance messages and found me at my desk sipping champagne, an act that was not really legit.

About 15 minutes before my 5:00 PM scheduled departure, my wife arrived clad in clothing and a cap appropriate for a chauffeur. With everyone looking on, she picked up my brief case, escorted me to our vehicle and opened the back door. She took out a blanket and held it so all the observers could see and then placed it over my lap. She gently closed the door, returned to the drivers seat and we slowly rode off into the sunset.

Little did I realize at that time I would still be above ground to make this post in 2019.

For those of you who didn't pass Ms Dunkle in math...

That means that Joe was born in 1921... that makes him give-or-take 98 years young. Many more happy ones, Joe21.

That was so much better than mine. I just walked out and closed the door and rode off into the sunset.

If people were as good as their obituary - and products were as good as advertised - this would truly be a wonderful world !!

good job. My father was amazing and lived at home until he was 93. He was still sharp as a tack but slowed way down the last couple of years. My memory gets blanks all the time and I'm just in my mid 50's. I eat and exercise about average I suppose. There is no way I will be able to stay healthy and brain conscience till I'm 90, much less 100!

You sir, are an inspiration.

I so enjoy your posts, Joe. This is a great story. My husband and I will be coming to Clemson for a baseball game in mid March. We plan to visit my brother-in-law's mother at Clemson Downs while we are there. I think I remember a post from you talking about living there. We would be honored to meet you in person if you are interested in visitors. Tmail me.

Joe21, please consider turning your writings over to a publisher. A book of your thoughts and memories would be absolutely awesome. You are truly an inspiration and an icon of what the tnetters here should be like.
