Ever see Dabo Swinney at Publix?

I had a late night after playing in my nine hole golf group Thursday. I didn’t wake up early enough to eat breakfast and was too lazy to cook lunch so I went to Publix to buy a family size bag of Doritos and some margarita mix for lunch. Imagine my surprise when I was walking down the snack food isle behind who I believed to be Dabo Swinney. Clemson shirt cleanly tucked into his khakis with a Clemson belt and brand new Nike Air Zoom Pegasus 38 Clemson Running Shoes. Clemson ball cap and everything. He was walking down the isle like a boss. He totally owned it. I knew it had to be him.
I immediately froze and could feel my palms start to sweat. My mind was racing? Do I tell him that I’m the Chad that sends flowers to his office every November 20th? Do I ask him if Tony Elliott ever told him about the plays I drew up and texted him after I got Tony’s number from his neighbors lawn guy? Do I congratulate him for winning two National Championships and even tell him about how I was cited for disorderly conduct after the second?
Honestly, what do you do if you ever come face to face with your hero in front of shelves stocked orderly with some of Americas greatest culinary achievements? I don’t know if it was because I was still a little dehydrated or if it was because my blood pressure was about to lead me to a visit of the CVS Minute Clinic, but I was positive that I was going to pass out.
I dropped to my knees just as he turned around to walk back towards me. The scene must have looked like one of those church paintings of people kneeling in front of a saint, but only potato chips and Red Bull in the background instead of religious stuff. Turns out it wasn’t Dabo and just some dude.
The important part of this story is that we need to plan for the unexpected. If you haven’t thought about it, you probably should. What would you do if you ever met Coach Swinney?

Say "Hi" and if he wants to do some small talk, go for it. Stay away from college sports conversations. Be like the guy next door. He is probably running a Honey-do list.

I would probably have a better conversation with Danny Ford. Dabo is a
great coach and mentor to his players but I wouldn't strike up small talk
with him unless he spoke first.

Happened to me probably 7 or so years ago at the Miyabi in Easley on a Saturday during the off-season. He was in front of us getting food with his boys and it looked like they’d been to some sports event. I figured I’d leave him alone and let him enjoy time with his family as I was with mine as well. The one thing I’ll never forget is that he paid in cash, almost got $20 back in change and stuck all of it in the tip jar. (granted he had the money but was nice to see)

I've met Dabo. It's pretty easy, really. I came to Clemson with ex-Michigan coach Lloyd Carr who lived in Greenville for a while and we were able to tour everything. Dabo is super cool.
But, probably because I was with coach Carr.
