Anyone else still have Christmas tree up?

Jan 4, 2022, 9:47 AM

Just me?

Wife says she always leaves it up until January 6th. She was raised Catholic and that is the day of Epiphany of the Lord. I think she is just trying to put off dealing with it. Anyone else do this or heard of this?

Still up. But also got home 1/2 and haven't taken the time

Jan 4, 2022, 9:49 AM

to take it down. It stayed up until February last year.

I think the 6th is the 12th day of Christmas traditionally.

Still? Never put it up.***

My mom mentioned Jan 6th / epiphany the other day, which is the first i've heard of it....but she's not catholic, so it's probably procrastination on her end

I was raised Methodist. We celebrate Epiphany as well,

Jan 4, 2022, 10:00 AM

but my family never tied that to ending Christmas celebration and taking decorations down. I get it, except that I don't.

until this weekend, even though the 12 days are over on Thursday.

I’ll bet she still goes to a Latin Mass.

Nah, her first husband was a dumbasss redneck.

Jan 4, 2022, 10:14 AM

She had to become Southern Baptist.

That is not an attack on Southern Baptists, that is an attack on dumbasss rednecks.

few years ago, and it's glorious. One additional perk is that you can leave it up until the spirit moves you to put it back in the basement.

TIL 12 days of Christmas happen AFTER Christmas, not before

Jan 4, 2022, 10:15 AM

dang, 18 years of Sunday School, absolutely worthless. I was never told this.

So why do we listen to Christmas music BEFORE Christmas, and not after?
This is all very, very confusing.

For record, my tree is still up, because it is a potted live tree. It will be my Christmas tree again next Christmas. My decorations came off it the day after though, how I was raised. My mom would rather burn her house down than have Christmas decorations still up on New Years. She deemed that an irredeemable new year's omen of bad luck.

badge-donor-05yr.jpg flag link military_tech thumb_downthumb_up

You, like most Americans, have confused the secular holiday

Jan 4, 2022, 10:41 AM

with the religious one.

It's hard to escape when the radio starts playing Christmas music before Thanksgiving.

But at a liturgical church, the Christmas music begins at Advent. Usually anticipatory songs like "O Come Emmanuel" then ramps up to the songs we think of all the way through to Epiphany.

I guess Southern Baptists don't make too much of the 12 days

Jan 4, 2022, 11:01 AM

Other than the grating "Partridge in a Pear Tree" song, I don't recall anybody ever making a big deal of it.

badge-donor-05yr.jpg flag link military_tech thumb_downthumb_up

Oh and my Geechee aunt TOTALLY believes in the superstitions

Jan 4, 2022, 10:45 AM [ in reply to TIL 12 days of Christmas happen AFTER Christmas, not before ]

around the tree. Can't put it up before Thanksgiving, can't leave it up past New Years. Do so and you are in for some BAD mojo.

growing up intertwined amongst the Gullah

Jan 4, 2022, 11:20 AM

people in the SC Lowcountry I'm not sure what is what with the traditions and superstitions my family adopted and maintained, whether from Gullah culture, Scots-Irish culture, Native American culture, or maybe something else. When your family has been in one spot for literally 250 years, core beliefs run deep. Hard to distinguish exactly how/where they developed along the way. My mom's family especially had all kinds of superstitions and rigid beliefs they held strong.

I know they are sometimes very different from other places I have lived, and range both good and bad.

badge-donor-05yr.jpg flag link military_tech thumb_downthumb_up

Mine is still up... 12 days of Christmas and all.

Jan 4, 2022, 11:08 AM

But Ephiphany was this past Sunday... so I guess we're all-clear to take it down. It blocks the view of the playroom TV from the kitchen...
