Hollywood, parts of the music industry, video gaming are usually very liberal and and in favor of Gun Control to the nth degree. But they won’t give up their right to produce violence in movies and music lyrics, and in video games. Hypocritical? Absolutely! Should be regulated more closely?

least of the concerns we should have.
There are much worse problems contributing to the insane uptick in mass-shootings. I fall on a very different political side from alot of you and that is fine, but I think the ease of access of weapons, especially high-powered weapons, contributes to the impulsiveness of someone which allows a situation like that to happen. Is that the ONLY contributing factor? Absolutely not. But it is one of the contributing factors.
Greenr is all for responsible gun-ownership, but gun-ownership in the United States has gotten out of control. It is a status symbol for some bordering on cultish for SOME people. I also understand that amongst a group of southern middle to upperclass white males, most of yall are going to probably disagree with me.

I remember alot of Columbine, the names, the CCTV videos of the incident, the endless coverage, because I was in high school at the time and we had some kids who started wearing trench coats afterwards, etc. We because ACUTELY aware of all the weirdos that might shoot up the school. I know they tried to make it seem like Columbine was partially because of violent games but I wasn't sure if that was just a push to find a fall guy when there wasn't one or not.

Not trying to tie this to the recent shooting, and this is totally anecdotal, but it seems like there is a lot more braggadocio with people who legally carry, than there was 20 years ago. It seems like 20 or so years ago people, that carried legally, didn't really talk about it. Now I hear more people talking about it in a bragging sort of way.

when I ended up pulling in a parking spot before this guy did. He was 2 rows over and I guess somehow he thought the spot was his.
I always thought it was funny that he is threatening me with "and I carry". What an arrogant thing to think. How does he know that I don't carry? How does he know that I don't have any kids, and have a lot less to lose than he does? Maybe, I'm willing to have a firefight in a parking lot. Maybe, I'm a lot better shot than him and I take out his kids first, and THEN him? His arrogance was pretty amazing, at least to me.

is a fair amount of research suggesting that mass shootings are a form of social contagion driven, in part, by the notoriety gained by the shooters (especially the earlier mass shooters). I believe there is similar research on suicide.
To the extent media plays a part, I think its by giving these folks coverage, although it seems like they have adjusted to an extent.
I would guess this plays a relatively small part compared to mental illness, family breakdown, social isolation, and relatively easy access to guns.

not a good argument now.
If there is any deviant cultural element that encourages mass shootings, it is the 2A community's glorification of firearms, from fashion accessories to warrior cosplay at protests. If the 2A started treating firearms like deadly weapons to be used only in extreme circumstances and with no joy at all (outside of their sporting uses, obviously), instead of taking christmas card photos with them, we could go a long way into dispelling this mystique around them that attracts warped minds of troubled kids.

Cut out some of the video game violence.
STOP selling auto and semi auto shat like ARs. Figure out a way to keep folks from amassing hoards of ammo. What is the fugging point?
Crack down on gun show and internet sales that aren't vetted properly.
Raise the age to purchase guns to 21.
Understanding that social media has a YUGE role in all of this, get those companies to prohibit and report these MFs that post photos showing off with guns, etc.
Want to own a gun? Cool. Go ahead. Fine. What we are and are not doing today is not only clearly not working but it's getting worse. Political agendas need to be put aside and real changes need to be made, like NOW.

people that have that stuff NEVER commit a crime. I get it. But again, WHAT'S THE POINT?
This fuckwad in TX buys an AR or 2 on his 18th birthday and ALL of the signs were there. Weird, obsessed with call of duty and guns, posting shid on social media, co workers were sketched out by his gun infatuation, broken home, etc.
Somehow I feel like some of this stuff can be prevented, but it's gonna take a bipartisan effort and sadly I don't think that will ever happen.

I just watch whatever entertains me and ignore the rest. Politics has a way of contaminating my soul so that I get bitter which violates my believe that we should love our neighbors as ourselves.
Now, this wouldn't be such a problem except that in no other forum could it be so well understood that I really love myself a lot.

No. People have always been violent
May 26, 2022, 12:25 PM
|
|
Despite what happened this week, we're still the less violent as a species than we have ever been. People weren't watching action movies throughout history. They weren't playing video games.
The Romans weren't violent because of Grand Theft Chariot. The Wild West wasn't violent because Dr. Brown and Marty brought back a VHS copy of Red Dawn. The Holocaust didn't happen because Hitler was listening to that extra violent extreme classical music.
We didn't have generations of kids jumping on turtles outside after playing Super Mario Brothers.
Movies, video games, and songs don't cause this--and that's been proven. It may feel like things are worse, but people have been violent and horrible if given the opportunity.
No Country for Old Men covers this nicely in the end.

Human life has little to no value to other humans today
May 26, 2022, 2:53 PM
|
|
most people get more upset when a dog or a horse or a bird gets killed/injured than an actual human being. Somebody kills a dog - watch the public outcry on the news. A human gets murdered...ahh, just another day, carry on.
That speaks volumes.
Society as a whole cares very little for human life any more. Until that changes, good luck out there.

Everything has changed... growing up, I almost never even saw
May 26, 2022, 8:50 PM
|
|
a gun. Basically no one had one... you didn't have to worry about opening up the glove compartment of your friends dad's car and seeing a 45 laying there. I had an old bolt-action 22 rifle that I shot in the woods as a teen. But nobody had an AR-15 or AK-47, we'd never heard of em, if they existed back then. I guess the equivalent back then would be a tommy-gun machine gun or something, but nobody had anything like that. Or ever seen one, outside of movies. The only guns I ever saw were the hunting rifles or shotguns of my friend's dads that hunted, locked up in a case.
But now, everybody's packing heat. And got AR-15's or AK-47's just stashed in a closet or whatever. Any nutjob can grab one, get a few high-capacity magazines, gear up with some body armor... and go on a rampage. It's almost too simple... anybody can do it. And they do.

in the back windows of the trucks in the high school lot because the guys driving them had gone deer hunting before school. There seemed to be a correlation between the dudes with guns in their trucks and the amount of camo they wore to school on that day.

I used to carry a gun to school. I did it a bunch of times.
May 27, 2022, 12:45 PM

|
I doubt it was ever loaded though. I was straight to never transport a loaded gun. We'd go duck hunting before school; my teachers would often ask how we did because they knew about the guns and if we were still wearing camo.
If a kid did that today they'd go straight to jail.
