We may very well be looking at Brownell's last stand

Feb 8, 2022, 9:04 PM

Coming off heels of this loss, you're asking this team to turn around and get up again to face Duke. Then asking another short turnaround to face Notre Dame. Even w/ those games at LJC, 1) they're against the top 2 teams in the ACC & 2) pretty sure the crowd's are probably not gonna be as up for them after watching this team letting another close 1 slip away in a season full of them. We very well be on the wrong side of .500 after this week going into the final 6 games. 3 of those are on road (which doesn't bode well give the poor record away from LJC this year). 5 of the 6 are against teams ahead of us in the standings & the 1 game that isn't is against a team that owns a win over us.

I know it's not a lack of effort by the boys on the court. But the fact is that we're realistically looking at not only finishing in the bottom half of the ACC in a very down year, but doing so w/ a sub .500 record - 1 year after making the NCAAT. I think we're at the point Clemson basketball needs some new life breathed into it. With as down as the ACC is, & w/ one of the perennial powers about to undergo a significant leadership change after the season, it might be the time to do it.

We can only hope, it’s just the same story over and over and over, and the same mistakes

They aren't beating Duke. They are going to be P..... lossing to UVa on Monday.

As long as the NCAA isn’t on campus to investigate and the players go to class, this will not be Brownell’s “last stand”. Neff has made that pretty clear.

Maybe it then needs to be Neffs last stand, the folks are paying the bills.

Where has Neff said that?***

On signing day David Hood asked him about Brad’s “performance” and he said they have been friends a long time, and that around here the only thing that matters from basketball is compliance, graduation rates, and keeping your nose clean. Not once mentioned any on court performance goals or even on court performance or game attendance/alumni support as a criteria.

flag link military_tech thumb_downthumb_up

I actually heard that interview too

Feb 9, 2022, 2:14 AM

He didn't say, "the only thing that matters from basketball is compliance, graduation rates, and keeping your nose clean".

Re: I actually heard that interview too

Feb 9, 2022, 10:15 AM

He said that’s how we judge our basketball program “around here” and never once mentioned on court performance. So one can safely assume those are the “only” criteria. Otherwise he would have said most important is compliance and rule following, and on court will be evaluated at the end of the year, but our goal is to be a tournament team at least every 2-3 years, or something like that.

Duke coming in not a happy camper after getting beat last night at the buzzar. NOT GOOD

I have a feeling it is.

Feb 8, 2022, 10:11 PM

Not sure I can explain why - I know we've all seen this movie before. I just have the feeling that even Brownell knows it's time. He's clearly done all he can do and taken it as far as he can take it (I know that sounds funny, but you know what I mean). We are beyond the point of absurdity, and keeping Brownell at this point only further establishes Clemson as totally irrelevant to the rest of the basketball world. Everybody with a brain, including Brownell himself, and our AD and BOT has got to be aware of this. The longer we keep Brownell, the deeper the hole gets, and the harder it's going to be to shake that reputation. I don't think those involved can or will fight it any longer. We'll see.

Agreed. The entire fan base besides Judge Keller wants him gone. Idk how he still is employed at the end of this season.

I’ve been a big Brownell supporter but it feels like it’s time. No excuse to be where we are at this point in the season and it’s the same ###### almost every game- get a decent lead, blow said lead by not scoring for 10 minutes, fall behind big, make furious comeback, fall short.

The same way your mom is still employed. Think about it. I'm just kidding HA. It does look like his number is up just like good ole mom!

Dear God

Feb 9, 2022, 12:15 AM

I hope so! Enough of mediocrity already!!!
Our players deserve better coaching than they are EVER going to get from CBB.

Mr. Neff, out US out of HIS misery now! As a basketball coach, Brownell has proven himself to be a lost cause. We have made him very wealthy and got crap in return and no matter how many more chances he is given, he can't deliver the gods even semi-consistently. Do you duty to the University, players, and fans and throw him out NOW, so e can get a better coach.

It’s time to put everyone out of the misery we are in!

Feb 9, 2022, 8:08 AM

The fans, players, students, and even BB have been in misery for too long. This has dragged on for 8 too many years. He has proven he does not have the answers to move us forward. He gave it his best. The program will be fine. We will have new life. Find a charismatic coach, one that inspires and enjoys his job. Enjoys the students, fans, players. Who will put oxygen back into LJ. Will wins come? Maybe, maybe not. But the death watch is too painful to continue. It should have been swiftly accomplished years ago. But as they say - the best time to solve an ongoing problem is today.

He’s had plenty of time and can’t move us to anything above mediocre. Time to move on. Truly the Bowden of basketball. Can’t win the close one. Good coach for a school wanting to be .500 and I wish him the best at a Div III school he winds up at.

With the possible exceptions of Bobby Roberts and Larry Shyatt, Brownell is the worst basketball coach in Clemson history. It is a credit to the administration's complete lack of caring that he has survived 12 years.

Re: We may very well be looking at Brownell's last stand

Definitely shows an overall institutional apathy about basketball as a sport. Fans are guilty as well. We get what we accept and we accept poor to crappy basketball.

And why would the administration be like that when Rick Barnes and Oliver Purnell were in recent memory? Do they care that they were good then?

Lack of ability to recruit enough high quality players, unable to develop players once here, and poor coaching during games especially during the last eight minutes!!!! Face it, we are headed for another year of not even qualifying for the NCAA Tournament!
