through the portal meaning we replace them with someone who doesn't have a lot of experience. like DJ.If we don't start using the portal we will get beat by those top teams that do

Not using the portal also adds a heightened emphasis to hitting on player evaluations. I wouldn’t label Notre Dame a puppy mill program b/c they obviously are not. However, their starting QB was a portal transfer last night. I think the portal could be used judiciously without compromising the integrity of your program as Dabo has inferred.

ND's quarterback is a graduate student who already graduated from Wisconsin. Isn't that different than using the transfer portal?

It means we are able to give scholarships to many fine young men, including multi-millionaire's kids, who lack the size and talent to play in the games.

You have the right question but the wrong example

Who in their right mind is bringing in a portal QB to compete with DJ? ND's situation of bringing Coan in makes sense because he is a one-year player and their alternative is a highly touted true freshman so you don't have to immediately throw him into the fire.

For this year's team, it would have made sense to go after portal OL, CB, WR, and maybe DT to add depth. I am not a fan of never using the portal, and telling recruits we use the portal far less than other elite schools can still be a selling point.
