Brownell and recruiting

Dec 28, 2013, 4:24 PM

You guys have to realize that he is at a disadvantage straight out of the gate because Clemson is located in South Carolina, which in general, has terrible high school and AAU basketball. There are 2 4* players from the South Carolina this season, Peak and Stroman. In 2015 there are 3 4* players, but 2 of the 3 are from Columbia, which puts us in a hole. OP enjoyed a flare up in South Carolina "talent" not from Columbia with his one "top" recruiting class, and we all know how the 2 studs in that class turns out. Brownell has done pretty well, considering how little in state talent he has to work with. Picking up a guy like Grantham from W.V. was a huge recruiting upset.

Devoe is averaging 35+ a game thus far this year. Perhaps the shooter we have needed.

East Coast (and even a bit on the West Coast). Our best teams during the Ellis years were stocked with players from DC and Baltimore and even had players from Inglewood and Compton. if you are going to compete in the ACC, you have to be able to recruit in practically every state as do UNC, Duke, Syracuse, Louisville and Notre Dame.

Since 2002 we have signed 2 4* players outside of SC

Sullivan and Grantham (both Brownell). Everyone likes to pine over the OP recruiting days, but other than Jennings and Booker, he exclusively signed 3* players.

Bottom Line: Purnell signed 4 Rivals 150 players in one

class (2009: Jennings, Noel Johnson - also a 4 star from out of state btw, D. Booker and Donte Hill). Brownell has only signed 3 Rivals 150 players since he arrived in 2010 (Sullivan in 2011, Blossomgame in 2012, and now Grantham in 2014).

In 7 recruiting classes, Purnell signed 10 Rivals 150 players (Vernon Hamilton, James Mays, David Potter, KC Rivers, Catalin Baciu, Andre Young and the 4 from '09). In 5 recruiting classes, Brownell has signed 3. It is demonstrably false that Brownell has been able to recruit at the same (nevermind at a higher) level than Purnell.

But again, the proof is not in the recruiting service numbers, The proof is in the Ws. Purnell won 19 games in year 3 and won 25 in year 4. Brownell won won 13 games in year 3. In year 4, how many do you think Brownell will win?

And Johnson and Hill transferred. Now Coleman is transferring.
