We have had receiver blocking issues on those screen plays
Oct 20, 2021, 10:38 AM

for a while now. Would think those issues would have been fixed by now as it really isn't a confusion thing (i.e. who they are supposed to block) that sometimes trips up our O-line. Just seems like these guys don't have certain fundamentals down and that is on the coaches...

Ross went after the wrong guy and missed.
Ajou was tracking the right guy and for some reason decided to turn around to see what his teammates were doing behind him as the defender ran right past him.
Very confusing

This is why...

passes to the boundary rarely work for Clemson. The idea is to overload the boundary with two or even three receivers in order to isolate one receiver in space or get the receiver matched up on bad coverage defenders like safeties and/or linebackers. However, if the other receivers don't block (or make no attempt at blocking (like Ajou and Ross did on this play), we might as well stop calling it because it's never going to work. In the NFL, that kind of effort (or lack thereof) will get you cut.

Exactly right .... every team in the country runs this play for a 3,4 or 5 yard gain and then occasionally will break one for big yardage. We are running this play for no gain or negative yardage which is downright pitiful.
I wonder if Tyler, Dabo, or Elliot (or preferably all three are asking these guys ..."what were doing" ..... maybe in a little stronger language!

Coaches should be emphasizing those things
Oct 20, 2021, 11:06 AM

and the team leaders/captains should be holding players accountable. I think that's what Dabo was referring to when he said some of his players were on basic arithmetic while others had mastered calculus. We are nowhere close to being a complete, well coached team. Everyone takes a share of the blame.

Correct Tigercook. I still say there has been an attitude shift which I first noticed in Dabo himself about a year ago. Something changed which made EVERYTHING go south and I have no idea what it was......only that I can see it on their faces and hear it in their voices.

The 20 & 21 teams vs the previous 10 win teams Dabo has coached us that these boys haven’t given up their social media during the season. All the “Politcal soap-boxing” bull$hit that went on last season was an excuse for them to stay on it during the season, and it has done nothing but start this downward trend. I hate social media. Tigernet is the closest thing I have to social media.

TC - how much do these players disrespect their coaches to show that level of effort and performance? I assure you it does not happen with the same player at Bama twice.

Maybe it’s just the way our receivers are trying to send a message to our play caller that the stupid sideways passes don’t work. They are saying throw the ball downfield and actually threaten the defense.

He was wide a$$ open at mid field with nary a defender in sight for what could and should have been a walk-in TD had he not tripped over his own two feet and dropped a pass that hit him right in the friggin' chest.

Wouldn't it be easier to, you know, block? Bad news WRs, they're gonna ask you to block in the NFL too.

Maybe, rather than attempting to block a defender they should just let the receivers run pass routes on every play no matter whether it is a run or a pass. When they run a pass route our guys always seem to have a defender or two glued to them like flypaper. That would pull defenders away from the play.
Art Briles and his ungodly proficient offenses at U of H and Baylor use to tell his receivers to do nothing if the play is not being thrown to you. That sounds dumb but it also made a defender stay with the receiver as he stood around or jogged off because you never knew what Briles was going to do next. Receivers LOVED playing for Briles. So did the rapists, thugs and other various Malcontents which became his downfall. But the Briles offenses were scoring machines.

That "stupid sideways pass" is called with a purpose and they work when executed properly. This play is a prime example. It would have gone for good yardage had either WR on that side actually made contact with a defender.
You got it bass ackwards.

It also makes the defense change to respect it which means fewer blitzes and fewer people in the box for running plays.
When 1 defender can make a tackle in a formation of 3 receivers it's time to sit some receivers and put in ones who will block.

Tee Higgins' blocking was a thing of beauty. If he wasn't the one scoring, you would always see #5 in the background escorting a hapless defender away from the ball carrier.

of them instead of running a freaking TE screen? With our BLOCKING TE? And if AJ isn't coached up enough to know what to do, WHY play him at all? It's pretty clear from the video that he was clueless, why is he even out there if he doesn't know the fundamentals? What do we do in practice?

Our WE screen blocking has been awful all year and the tape is out there on YouTube of you need any proof.
Another complaint on this is the original design and coaching on the play. why is Davis Allen looking for that ball over his back shoulder and not being led with a throw in front of him?? Give the play another .5 seconds to develop and you are able to completely change the play by leading Allen with the ball. If we started running some routes with a pump fake off these WR screens we would have two receivers wide open because DBs are breaking on the screen every single time.

That exact play is the most watched for after the run up the middle on first down by opposing teams that we play. And those two plays mostly yield nothing 7-8 times out of 10 times run!!!

Ross is letting his injury stay in his head and has him playing as a below average receiver Poor blocking skills , dropping keys passes , not extending out for passes caught for holding in a key drive He will have to stay next year to have a chance to be drafted I would not have him in key situations He just can’t overcome his injury from a mental standpoint
