basketball thoughts...

Dec 14, 2015, 9:55 AM

After the heartbreaker last night, we sit at 6-3. So far, we have taken care of the teams we are 'supposed' to beat. We lost to Umass, Temple, and Alabama. All of these are 'respectable' losses and we have some decent wins already.

I've watched almost every game in the BB era, and other than his first year, I think this team has some pieces to be the best squad that BB has had. Blossomgame, Nnoko, Grantham, and Holmes are all good players who are also really good athletes. I would love to see Grantham not disappear sometimes.

I told some folks the other day that, starting last sunday night, this 5 game stretch with Wofford, Bama, PC, South Carolina, and UGA would tell us a lot about this years team. I said we needed to win 4 out of 5 to get to 9 wins before conference play starts. We need to win the next 3 to make that happen.

We are going to make mistakes, but this years team plays harder, faster, and with more grit than the teams of the last few years.

I truly believe this years team is a 16-18 win team that makes the NIT. That would be a decent year with playing no true home games and having to travel to 'the well' as early as 10 am on gamedays.

We also bring back everyone next year except Roper and Nnoko and bring in Shelton Mitchell and Marcquise Reed that will be upgrades at their positions. Couple that with moving back home into the 'new' littlejohn, next year should be a 20-22 win kinda season barring any major injuries or transfers.

Anyways, keep the faith and stay the course!

Go Tigers!

Brad Brownell is the Tommy Bowden of basketball. We need to hire a coach with NBA ties that will help us get better talent. 6 years is more than enough time.

He wishes he was as good as Tommy Bowden.***

You lost me on the part about we have some good wins so far. We lost to Minnesota. Those were not good losses by the way...

Our basketball program is in a shambles.

Dec 14, 2015, 10:06 AM

It is being rebuilt as we speak from the ground up. This season will not be pretty, but it wasn't expected to be. To be brutally honest we are in a no win situation until facilities are completed and we recruit better. Not sure if Brad can get it done, but I will support him and not make this situation any worse.

Bottom line: I like our players and know they play hard.

Dec 14, 2015, 10:47 AM

What is puzzling is how so many mid-majors have #2 and #3 players who can light it up from the outside with threes. We really struggle in this area every year.

Our recruiting brings in nice role players and some athletes who develop into decent scorers like KJ and JB. But where are shooters that can play the second guard or small forward spots?

OCCULUS !!! How can we expect to be taken serious if there is no Occulus ? Actually, I never heard of this Occulus thing until I heard it was being put on Death Valley ... really like it ... in fact, turning my front porch into an Occulus.

The facts suggest our losses have been horrible losses.

Dec 14, 2015, 10:46 AM

Since beating us, UMass has lost 4 of 5 including losses to Creighton by 22, Ole Miss, Univ. of Central Florida, and Florida Gulf Coast. UMass is currently 5-4.

Since beating us, Minnesota has lost 3 straight including losses to South Dakota, South Dakota State and Ok. State to fall to 5-5.

Alabama has some pretty good wins and seems to be much improved under Avery Johnson, but they lost their 6-5 all world point guard before our game. The manner in which we lost the game was bad and a sign of no leadership on this team.

We do not play harder than last year's team. We do not play with more grit. We do play faster on offense, but we are lost on defense.

Throw in the fact that we lose our only decent big man - Landry Nnoko after this year. Last night, Nnoko had 15 points and 6 rebounds in 24 minutes. Our other 3 big men combined for 2 points and 4 rebounds in 20 minutes. We're not a very good team with Nnoko, but not nearly as good without him. Hard to see how we improve next year with no low post presence whatsoever.

2024 orange level memberbadge-donor-05yr.jpg flag link military_tech thumb_downthumb_up

Actually, I think the facts show we wore the other teams out

Dec 14, 2015, 1:22 PM

not a good basketball team this year.

We do have pieces but................

Dec 14, 2015, 10:51 AM

losing to Alabama, who is a decent team, by one point but being out-rebounded by such a wide margin cost us and is based on pure effort. Alabama was ranked 319 in rebounding and we must have took it easy b/c of this. I agree that we do have pieces but I am now wondering if we can go anywhere with Brownell. If we split between SC and UGA we will go 8-4 OOC. I do not see more than eight ACC wins and that makes us 16-14. Even with an ACC tournament win 17 wins won't get us in the NIT. Then what? we must wait and see what happens but we have lost far too many games based on effort and it has cost us too much. I like Brownell but I am not confident in him.

Ay chance we get a new HC for next season?

Dec 14, 2015, 11:00 AM

That might bring a renewed excitement to along with the newly renovated LJ. I like CBB as a person, but he will never ever get it done. Might as well try to get somebody young and roll the dice. We can't get out of the contract though can we? Wouldn't the buyout be too much and we are stuck with him?

flag link military_tech thumb_downthumb_up

Re: Ay chance we get a new HC for next season?

Dec 14, 2015, 1:16 PM

I think the buyout is $3.5 mm this year and $3 mm the next. IMO, he'll be replaced after next year if there's no NCAA bid.

No Brownell has two more years period. Bitching and moaning about things really does no good.

the administration or Brownell was counting on that.

That would be a deal killer for him returning next year.

How do you figure that?

We started out last year 6-3 also with some very bad losses.

Same record as last year and a difficult schedule coming up.

Dec 14, 2015, 2:52 PM

Our defense is nowhere near what it was last year. We are marginally better offensively, but much worse defensively with our lack of length and athleticism on the perimeter and we do not rebound nearly as well with the smaller lineup. Our ability to defend the long ball has regressed from bad to worse and our ability to stop other guards from running their offense has regressed. The level of guard play in the ACC is so much better than what we have faced to date.

That tweet sure hurts the spin from 3 weeks ago that the directional schools we opened up with were worth anything. The telling stat is we are 1-3 against teams from multi-bid leagues.
