Re: TNET: What happened to WRU? We asked Brandon Streeter

Nov 17, 2022, 11:37 AM

We don't have a Qb that is consistent enough, the O-Line can't protect enough, and anyone not named Antonio Williams can't hold onto the ball enough to reach 100 yards in a game. Never mind the playcalling is as pedestrian as any team in college football! We used to be the standard now we are almost a laughing stock when it comes to our offensive philosophies. We have no identity, it is only due to our wealth of talent itself that we are 9-1!Something has to change and I believe Dabo is aware and will make the changes after the season! Jeff Scott coming back and recruiting WR's would help but a new offense would be needed!

military_donation.jpg flag link military_tech thumb_downthumb_up

just curious.......

Nov 17, 2022, 11:48 AM

what makes you think Dabo's aware?? and secondly what makes you think Dabo will make changes??

there was a GOLDEN opportunity last year to make changes w/o out having to fire anybody when TE left........instead he did what he does.........hire from within w/o thinking twice if there's somebody better outside the program.........."Best is the standard".........the best DC and OC in the country was at clemson this whole time??.......SMH

flag link military_tech thumb_downthumb_up

yes, your rhetorical ? is statistically impossible...

Nov 17, 2022, 9:16 PM

But By God you're not supposed to question it! It can lead to discovery-

Nov 17, 2022, 2:32 PM [ in reply to Re: TNET: What happened to WRU? We asked Brandon Streeter ]

I agree with a lot of what you've said, and I just want to add what I think most of the reason of why receivers don't hold onto the ball, and that's on DJ. Just this last game DJ threw a ball to the receiver across the middle about 10 yards down field, and it look like he was throwing a fast ball from the pitchers mound, and it blew right threw the receivers hands bc he had to reach for it, but it was so hot that he couldn't hold onto it, but IMO, not many WR would have been able to hold onto a FB thrown that hard from that short distance. DJ just can't judge how hard the ball should be thrown, and he's never had that touch....

Nov 17, 2022, 3:32 PM [ in reply to Re: TNET: What happened to WRU? We asked Brandon Streeter ]

Nice excuse from Streeter.

We all know the truth though. The WRs aren’t what they used to be.

Tajh was very similar to DJ. Big arm QBs that struggle with accuracy and progressing through reads. But Tajh had Nuk, Sammy, Martavis, Humphries, Peake, and Jaron Brown. All NFL players. Nuk has been elite in the NFL. Sammy was elite in college.

Deshaun was better than DJ. And Deshaun had Mike, Renfrow, Artavis, Deon, and Ray Ray. Mike and Renfrow were elite in college, and both have been pretty great in the NFL. Artavis, Deon, and Ray Ray could all make plays in college.

Trevor was also better than DJ. And Trevor had Renfrow, Tee, Ross, Amari, and Etienne. Renfrow and Tre were elite. Ross was elite as well, but Trevor missed him their junior year. Amari was explosive. And Etienne was the best RB in school history.

DJ’s WRs don’t come close to theirs. Talking about last year is pointless considering all the injuries we suffered. But, Ngata has been a monumental disappointment. EJ Williams has regressed. Brannon Spector isn’t good. Beaux is good, but I don’t see anything elite about him. He doesn’t have elite size or elite speed. Antonio has been great, but he’s only a freshman. Randall hasn’t done anything this year. Hopefully that’s because of the knee, and not indicative of what’s to come. This WR room is mediocre at best. We all know it.

I agree with most of this, but DJ is causing the WR to not

Nov 17, 2022, 7:00 PM [ in reply to Re: TNET: What happened to WRU? We asked Brandon Streeter ]

be as good as they could be...

If a chicken lays 6 eggs and one is bad... the problem is the egg.

If a chicken lays 6 eggs and they are all bad... you need a new chicken.

(Play calling has a lot to do with this as well.)

I'm not one of those "Cade or bust" fans, but would like to see him early in the games like what they did with Trevor and DW4.

Plan it before the game starts. "Cade gets drive 3 and 4" regardless of what is happening in the game. That way nobody gets thier feels hurt.

flag link military_tech thumb_downthumb_up

Re: I agree with most of this, but DJ is causing the WR to not

Nov 19, 2022, 7:42 AM

Deshaun and Trevor could literally just throw the ball up and let Mike, Deon, Tee, or Ross make a play. They also had the ultimate safety blanket in the slot with Renfrow. They also had a threat in the screen/short game with Artavis, Ray Ray, Amari, and Etienne.

DJ has none of those things. Antonio is our best slot/screen/short passing threat. But he can only play one position at once. He can’t line up in the slot and boundary. Beaux isn’t fast/quick enough screens/short passes. Ngata, Randall, and EJ aren’t built for that. Brannon is so average.

Ngata, Randall, and EJ aren’t close to Mike, Deon, Tee, or Ross in the vertical passing game either. And Shipley/Mafah aren’t the same receiving threat that Etienne was.

We need to all accept that fact that our WR has gotten so much worse under Grisham. And it doesn’t appear like it’ll be improving any time soon.

Nov 17, 2022, 11:44 AM

Are we not throwing more to the TEs and running more?

flag link military_tech thumb_downthumb_up

It’s completely wrong and I don’t buy it

Nov 17, 2022, 12:11 PM

I think we can all agree that we have issues on offense, right? Sure, We can disagree on what they are.

All things equal having better running backs and TE’s should open up more opportunities for the WR’s to make big plays downfield because the defense should have to play us honest.

But, defenses do not respect WR’s and they don’t play us honest, they bring 7-8 guys in the box and focus in on the RB’s and dare us to throw it down field.

The worst of it is that IF you are going to feed your RB’s and TE’s, then your WR’s need to run the right routes crisply and block well. I challenge you to find a game where our WR’s have done those 2 things well.

First, let me say that I love all our guys and tge effort they’ve given this year. With that being said, let’s be honest. We don’t have a Mike Williams, Sammy Watkins, or Tee Higgins on the team currently. Recruiting has to pick up in this area if we are to stay in the “elite” category as a team.

Football program has the best of everything, and the expectations are naturally higher than they are for basketball.

Basketball program has to scratch and claw for everything it gets, and expectations are naturally lower than they are for football.

When our basketball program has even a fraction of the luxuries our football program has, I’ll gladly up my criteria accordingly. I would love that.

We had far fewer resources for the basketball program when Rick Barnes was coach yet we excelled in basketball.

The Men’s soccer team has fewer resources than the basketball team yet they won the National Championships last year.

I don’t buy the “more resources needed” to improve the basketball program … doesn’t hold water.

I concur.....we don't have that gamebreaker.....that game changer....that dude that just makes plays consistently if and when the ball comes their way.

Clemson is so systematic now its almost problematic even though we do get positive numbers most of the time its just such a slow process.

Shipley...Antonio Williams...Mafah...Davis Allen....those are your "" Yard Chunksters ""
Shipley has what it takes to be a homerun runner/scorer. Mafah also can do it. The blocking has to be a lot cleaner to achieve it more.

flag link military_tech thumb_downthumb_up

All of those guys you listed...

Nov 17, 2022, 12:17 PM

and probably a couple of others we have currently on campus COULD be big-time playmakers If we had a Trevor Lawrence or a Deshaun Watson also on campus. What we have is two QBs with the raw tools who need development. They need to be coached up on the finer skills of the most difficult position in football. And from what I've seen, I don't think that's happening very much. THAT'S the biggest trouble we have on offense right now IMO.

Nov 17, 2022, 12:31 PM [ in reply to Re: TNET: What happened to WRU? We asked Brandon Streeter ]

I think that if we got just one ofthose types of guys (Sammy, Nuke, Tee, etc.) it would make all of our WRs more productive - in fact the whole offense would be more successful with one guy to take the top off.

flag link military_tech thumb_downthumb_up

How do you know we don't have such player??

Nov 17, 2022, 12:33 PM [ in reply to Re: TNET: What happened to WRU? We asked Brandon Streeter ]

When the QB can't throw a ball accurately past the line of scrimmage? When the WR's have to run through the LBs, DBs and Safeties every play? When the QB's 7yds per catch are 90% YAC yards. When the playcalling is so Vanilla that just about anyone with football knowledge can call the play when guys line up. Any D1 Power5 Def Coordinator can scheme out offense, just line up and play hat-on-hat and that gives an extra defender to stunt with. There are no secrets to our offense, just let the defense play and if they have similar talent like ND, we lose every time. If they play sound defense with enthusiasm they almost beat us like Cuse and WF. If they had similar talent, we lose all day everyday!

That said, we have talent on the field, we are lacking talent on the sidelines. We have all first time coaches, either first time college coach, first time D1 coach, first time DC and first time coaching period, first time HC, all with the exception of Eason. How can you expect a top tier D1 school to seriously compete coaching-wise with this staff.

I think Dabo is doing himself a disservice by not hiring better quality staff! He would have less stress and probably less headaches of he brought on another BV type as DC and OC.

Our WRs are mostly non-factors because we are throwing to the tight ends and running backs more?!? Come on.

He goes on to sell that as "more versatility." Is that why our offense ranks 72nd in passing yards per game this year?

That 72nd rank, which puts us in the bottom half of the 131 FBS teams, includes all those passes to our tight ends and running backs.

Pathetic.

Not sure that's it but when Hunter Renfrow left we seemed to lose the ability to maintain possession on third and long. To me we don't throw the ball to receivers over the middle nearly enough in the 7 to yard range. Maybe it isn't there but 7 yard down and out to the sideline doesn't make alot of 10 yd gains.

Re: TNET: What happened to WRU? We asked Brandon Streeter

Nov 17, 2022, 12:01 PM

We have an average of 8.3 different pass catchers per game (83 unique pass catchers in 10 games). That seems a pretty high number (high of 11, low of 5) and so curious as to how this compares to other top programs out there. Several DC's have made comments about our offense's diversity in lead up articles, yet a lot of the fan frustrations on here seem to be pointing out the opposite. At 9-1, we're obviously doing something right.

Nov 17, 2022, 12:12 PM

I have noticed the same things this year. We may not be as talented at wr as we have been, but we do an excellent job of spreading the ball around to different position groups to take advantage of the openings the defense gives us, given the limitations of our QB.

Streeter has done a very good job this year.

2024 orange level memberbadge-donor-05yr.jpg flag link military_tech thumb_downthumb_up

"given the limitations of our QB..."

Nov 17, 2022, 12:22 PM

Should that be QBs, plural? And who is the QBs coach? How many practices has that QBs coach had to work with ALL the QBs on our roster?

We have two 5* QBs in the QB room that we sincerely hope aren't busts, and one that was a 5* but is definitely a bust. Tell me sir... who was the QBs coach responsible for developing ALL of these guys?

Our OC has done an excellent job of maximizing his limited abilities and fragile confidence, resulting in a 9-1 record, possible ACC Championship and trip to the playoffs.

Bryce Young, the QB for Alabama, threw 22 passes his freshman year of 2020 and completed 13 for 156 yards. In year two, he completed 314 of 462 passes for 4,322 yards and 43 touchdowns with 4 interceptions. He won the Heisman Trophy.

Please forgive me for not being hysterical in my analysis of the current situation.

took away most of the questions on offensive performance. With lots of respect for FLYINGTIGER and Chuckston T-Man®, the current offensive woes certainly include DJ, WR's not named Williams, and offensive coaches incl. Dabo, Streeter and Grisham. Can these coaches develop QB's? I lean to no based on 2021-22 offense and what I'm seeing with stroking DJ and dissing Klubnik. IMHO we don't use talented Davis and Briningstool enough.

@DavidHood There is no Deshaun Watson, Mike Williams, Wayne Gallman, Deion Cain, Ray Ray McCloud, Trevor Lawrence, Travis Etienne, Tee Higgins, Justyn Ross, Amari Rodgers on the team. There isn't a single guy on offense that is truly a go to guy that can be a difference maker or can cause major concern for a defense. In the past we've had a few of them. Talent is a big issue, scheme maybe because you had DW4 and TL16 to cover up any busted plays. We've missed on some guys as evident the past 2 years on the o-line with 2 true freshman starting.

flag link military_tech thumb_downthumb_up

Lots of teams out there that dont have 5* talent

Nov 17, 2022, 2:37 PM

That are putting up far better offensive numbers than Clemson is. So thats a weak (at best) argument. You have to actually gameplan, scheme, and call legitimate plays if you dont have NFL receivers that can just go up and get it.

flag link military_tech thumb_downthumb_up

Re: TNET: What happened to WRU? We asked Brandon Streeter

Nov 17, 2022, 12:27 PM

It is correct to question the play calling. It is also correct to note how many passes wind up in the first row of game attendees. And the reason is that for two seasons we have had a quarterback who simply cannot perform consistently at the elite level. He seems like a nice young man, and we are all pullilng for him. But he can’t do it. If we had had a confident, talented but non-superstar QB in 2021, we would have beaten Georgia, whose championship team was not fully developed yet. That would have started off last year’s season very differently. Almost any other ACC QB last year could have led us to victory in that game against Georgia, starting with Kenny Picket of Pitt. This year he is the starting QB for the Steelers. Turning to this year, just choose that absoutely abysmal Notre Dame game. So they block a punt early on and score. But a good QB would simply have said, “No problem. We will go down the field now and tie it up.” It takes confident swagger. Our QB simply doesn’t have that swagger. It is revealing that our coaches were hesitant to leave Cade in there for very long against Louisville because they were worried about what that would do to DJ’s confidence. What? This isn’t kindergarten, guys!. Not to mention he can’t throw the TD bomb. Watch just about any game on a Saturday and you will see a quarterback who can throw the TD bombs (except the fill-in QB at Notre Dame!) There is plenty of blame to go around, but in the end this is a quarterback-centered game. DJ simply cannot fill that role. Someday we will look back on the “DJ Era” and think it is one of the worst phases Clemson football ever went through. And coming up is the another problem. No NFL team will waste a draft pick on DJ. So he will probably decide to spend one more year as a Tiger, hoping for better luck in the 2023 draft. Oh no! Then what does Dabo do?

Great Politician response - but how are you suppose to answer a question like that.

- Can't say that talent not as strong (at WR or QB) - may hurt confidence :) - but seriously, when you have QB's like TL and DW, production will be high and you make the players around you better. Look how TL made Powell look after most of his other options graduated

- Can't say recruiting dropped off - not good for current players or yourself

- Can't say playcalling must improve - not good for yourself or Dabo.

So, probably the best he could have answered.

The answer is all of the above. The receivers don't fight for footballs the way the former guys did. Clemson is better at the other positions, creating less opportunity. The line isn't good and forces quicker throws. DJU doesn't read things as fast, so open shots get missed. At times, the play calling is suspect. But, the two biggest factors are not being as physical in theOLine and receiver groups.

Re: TNET: What happened to WRU? We asked Brandon Streeter

The line isn't as good... we have 4 and 5 star linemen

Receivers aren't as good... we have 4 and 5 star receivers

QB's are not as good... we have three 5 star QB's

Defense is not as good - but loaded with 4 and 5 star players

The talent level has not dropped off and we are clearly not as good as we were in the recent past. If it were in one area then you look at the position coach right? (That is a legitimate question) What do you do when the drop off is everywhere? Who answers for that?

Welcoming any real answers

Well, I expected a bit of drop off on the defensive side - you just cannot replace BV like that. I think Goodwin has done a reasonable job and he seems to be getting better & more aggresive as the season wears on.

I never thought that Elliot was as special as BV but maybe I was wrong. I also thought we would have been doing a better job of bringing Streeter along before Elliot left. I did not expect this big a drop off on offense, but Streeter is saddled with a flawed starter and apparently a 5 star freshman that still is not ready to overtake said flawed starter. That is two big loads for a first year guy to have to deal with.

Not ready to bail on Streeter just yet. This offensive staff clearly lacks faith in the QB to challenge a defense vertically, this season. This severely limits WR production, especially on the boundary.
With at least moderately improved QB play, this will allow for more aggressive play calling, and WR play should be greatly improved, perhaps coming close to meeting the standard of us armchair OC's.

Ram,

I don't think that this can be overstated. Even a veteran OC would have trouble dealing with DJ's limitations (see Elliot in 2021). In fact, if you want to look at it this way, Streeter is doing a better job with the offense (& DJ's limitations) this year than Elliot did last year so . . .

I am still concerned that CK is not capable of taking over - that might be on Streeter.

also: you cant win the Kentucky Derby, riding "francis the talking mule"..in other words--u got to have the thoroughbred horses like we used to have

streeter is doing the best he can with what he has...remember when reggie herring said: we got who we got..he got crucified for saying it...but it was true..some cant handle the truth

Nov 17, 2022, 1:52 PM

How much talent does he need to help us become a good offense?!?

He has 4- and 5-star players at multiple positions, and he's playing against defenses with mostly 3-star players.

Enough with the excuses.

QB's, with one being a #1 overall draft pick and the other the highest paid NFL QB ever, as well as being deeply involved in Clemson's passing game preparation and play calling for many seasons leading up to this year's promotion to OC, where we are sitting at 9-1 overall (2 games better than '21) with a legit shot of a CFP berth in front of us, Streeter doesn't need to answer to one single quacking duck out there about how he is directing this offense. Not a one. Nobody is offering any excuses, for anything, regardless of some people crying out for them.

Now, if Streeter had been at this for years and our offense struggled with QB and WR play consistently throughout, that's a different story and one that Dabo would likely have already addressed, considering his remarkable credentials as the Clemson football head coach to date. Criticizing Streeter for gameplanning with what he has versus what they have is a stretch. It's what coaches do. And Streeter is a winning one at that - bigly.

Go Tigers.

Regarding the need for Cade to beef up a little to play at this level, where the defensive players are huge AND fast: When I was at Clemson in the mid-60’s, I was a student assistant to Bob Bradley, the legendary Sports Information Director for years and years. I got to hang out in the old Fike Field House with the coaches. One year, a big debate took place amongst the coaches when offensive coach Art Baker persuaded a skeptical Coach Frank Howard to offer a scholarship to a tall skinny kid from Anniston, Alabama, named Jimmy Addison. Coach Howard nicknamed him The Needle because he was so skinny. Our offense was struggling so Coach Howard pulled Addison off the bench and sent him into a game where we were behind and it looked like we would lose. The Needle brought us back. We won, and his skill, his confidence, his swagger, led us to several ACC championships. I see that same spark when Cade is in the game. If I want the DJ Era to be over (no offense), I am looking FORWARD to the Cade Era. It’s coming, folks! Go Tiguhs! (as Coach Howard pronounced “Tiger” in his Barlow Bend, Alabama accent).

Dj throws for 40 yards across the field for a 3 yard gain, but can't throw it 25 yards forward... as much as I am a DJ advocate, it really is true. He throws it too high when aiming downfield.

Dabo will have to scrap this weak and stale offense and start over for us to be elite again. Gotta get better talent and Streeter will have to go. I like Streeter, but he is not the answer at recruiting or play calling!

Nov 17, 2022, 3:24 PM

In the recent past, so many big plays had a WR pushing his man way down field. Now, slip screens get blown up and break out runs get stopped at 10 yds because WR's aren't staying on their guys.

They don't win 50/50 balls, don't have the opportunity for as many 50/50 balls. Appear soft - nobody was tougher than nuke. They don't catch well - so many drops. Better this year, but not strong. Don't have a QB that makes plays happen, ala Trevor, Tajh but most of all Deshawn. He made everyone better.

And I wonder: have we fallen into the star ratings trap? I don't know, just wondering.

Well, its not rocket science. We simply aren't as good at any position (likely including coaches) as we were in 2019. Just ask yourself to name the starters from this team that would have started on the 2019 team that made Alabama look like the JV team.
We can still (and should!) win the ACC but have clearly dropped to that level instead of the elite level at the top.

If you ask 10 people outside of Clemson, WRU is either Southern Cal or LSU. We have missed on getting top receivers for the last several years.

I agree with one person that stated that it was a political response. However, I don't think that anybody has hit on the fact that the offense never seems to be allowed to get into a rhythm. We get a lead and then go into football's version of the 4 corners (sorry if young kids have no idea what that is). It has worked for winning ballgames, but I am not sure that it has not been at the detriment of the offense.

How can we develop an offensive identity, if we are schizophrenic during the game? DJ said this week that he likes to play fast, where there is more reaction and less thinking. My advice to Streeter and Dabo would be to let him do it and continue it the whole game. Dabo always points out that it is important for the players to have fun. How fun is it to be playing well, only to have the air taken out of the ball? Maybe Dabo is trying to overthink things as well.

Somewhere along the course of the year, we started playing not to lose, instead of to win. It was fine when we were starting off well, but it breeds playing tight. All of a sudden when things start off bad we play even tighter.

I have some bright orange glasses, but I think it is as simple as opening things up and let the kids have fun. Let them play football like my golf game as I have gotten older. Don't worry about the bad shots. Just count the great ones. We'll have teams in the post season where we might need to play to not lose the game in the second half, but not against Miami or Scar. Set a goal of having to substitute for the Tiger, because he just can't do any more push ups. If the offense gets the idea that Dabo has enough confidence in them to score TD's and not screw up. If he shows that by letting them continue to play and not trying to put things in a deep freeze, then the offense will be fine.
