I’m not vaccinated, I don’t wear a mask any longer, and I certainly will not be hiding in a cave.

flag link military_tech thumb_downthumb_up

I wonder the long term impacts on health care and insurance costs.

May 5, 2021, 8:54 AM

Short term costs (absenteeism, OT coverage) and lost productivity to businesses from lingering COVID-19 cases from the anti-Vaxers are direct and not insignificant. The cost of treating long haulers and potentially chronic or permanent health issues from the virus will eventually be passed on to all insured parties.

Seems once the EU authorization becomes permanent, then private enterprises will become more avid vaccine advocates. A squeeze similar to that used on tobacco users may occur.

Re: I wonder the long term impacts on health care and insurance costs.

May 5, 2021, 10:01 AM

I am just now starting to get over long-haul COVID myself.

It. Effed. Me. Up. Put me out of work for better than three months. Wouldn't wish it on my worst enemy, and I'm still not back 100%...and honestly, I'm kinda wondering if I'm ever really gonna be or if there's some stuff I'm just going to have to learn to live with.

My overwhelming suspicion is, when Variant X comes sweeping in next year and it's meaner, nastier, and even more vicious than what we just went through, and it rips right through the unvaccinated population, America's going to be short a couple million anti-vaxxers at the end of it.

I won't be saying "I told you so", because I suspect there may not be many folks left to argue with at that point.

This thing feels like a perfect storm brewing, it really does.

Gay marriage is legal now right? Here’s what my attorney says. If you’re lucky the couple will just go somewhere else. If they decide to be an activist they will drag you through the courts claiming civil rights discrimination. He said I could maybe win but after spending thousands and many hours of stress. That’s where we are. As for specific laws go look it up yourself.

Either prove your claim or just admit you don't know there to be an actual law.

Gay marriage is legal in the sense that states can't bar gay people from getting married. As in their actual government licenses and such.

That doesn't cover businesses serving them as customers.

Re: No, no, no...

May 6, 2021, 9:21 AM

What it means is that if a gay couple decides that since marriage is legal, and since I’m “denying them civil rights based on discrimination”, they could decide to go activist and make a splash. My attorney says I might win but at what cost? So, since our beloved government changed the legal laws on marriage it absolutely does put me in a tough spot. So, yes, the government opened this potential can of worms.
It’s a part time gig. We are no longer public with it because of the increased risk. I’m not risking everything because somebody wants to make the news.

flag link military_tech thumb_downthumb_up

Re: No, no, no...

May 6, 2021, 9:27 AM

Lawd, making gay marriage legal told all governments they can't bar them from getting married. It didn't say anything about private businesses.

Let me guess, though. You have a problem with the government saying you should have to serve a gay couple, but you also think gay marriage should still be outlawed.

No? Correct me if I'm wrong.

Hint: You don't want to say you think gay marriage should be illegal because it destroys your argument.

I think you--and your lawyer--need to review the Supreme Court case concerning this a little more closely.

To answer your question , I do not think gay marriage should be legal.

Yep, it destroys your argument and shows you're a hypocrite. It's kind of like that indoctrination argument. You are okay with it if it's YOUR belief system.

Let's break down what you're saying:

"How dare the government attack my freedom and dictate to me as a business owner who I can and can't serve!"

While in the same breath saying:

"The government should forbid certain consenting adults from being allowed to marry whomever they want!"

That's pure, base hypocrisy. Nothing else around it. You're saying you're just fine with government overreach into freedoms so long as it forbids what you don't like. This is the problem we got into with Trump and the push to fascism: Citizens who deep down want fascism (but often don't even realize it) are fine with infringing on other people's rights as long as they feel theirs are protected.

Our founding fathers took care to try to avoid this.

May 6, 2021, 11:02 AM

One last response because we will go around and around and never agree. No , I’m not being a hypocrite. The government does not get to decide what is moral. The government can pass laws that I disagree with. If I then were to say oh well it’s the law and the norm now do I need to get in line, that’s when I would be a hypocrite. The government can decide its ok for gays to get married. I don’t have to agree and I don’t have to comply on my private property. I realize most on this board thinks that’s an awful attitude. Ok by me.

flag link military_tech thumb_downthumb_up

And...

May 6, 2021, 11:41 AM

You and your religion don't get to decide what is moral based on your book and whether or not certain people can get married.

flag link military_tech thumb_downthumb_up

Re: And...

May 6, 2021, 1:22 PM

Yep, you're right. And we don't have to. Our Constitution, however, says you can't dictate people's personal lives based on your religious beliefs. Thus, gay people can get married. It doesn't affect you and you don't have a right to force your religious beliefs on them.

So says the First Amendment and the SCOTUS.

I'd be interested to know the percent of people that have been able to work from home in Meck County as opposed to Greenville. This could be a reason for higher transmission rates.

the cases of Mecklenburg. Only 368 cases in Anderson where nobody GAF. When I have people come in from out of state it's like they've walked into Utopia, not being assaulted over not wearing a mask and being able to go into a restaurant seems to be quite freeing for them.

I can't wait to get back to SC. I'm tired of having to have a mask in my pocket everywhere I go. People here in my part of VA walk around outside with masks on. I think I'd be on the evening news if I took it off in the grocery store god forbid.

That being said, I'm not afraid to be cavalier about it after being fully vaccinated. If I didn't have the vaccines I'd still be pretty nervy about being around the wretched unwashed masses that is the general public.

Re: Wouldn't a vaccine passports violate HIPPA laws?

May 5, 2021, 10:21 AM

We're about to learn something about plagues the hard way, I think. When the chips really, really, really get down, and they really start getting threatening, the Powers That Be will do what they have to do.

Survival trumps, well, everything.

We just aren't that desperate yet with COVID. But a really bad variant that starts pushing the death toll up from 585K where it is today (which is an insane number, by the way, more than ten times the number that died in Vietnam!), into the millions, and peoples' tunes are going to change...and real quick.

I'm on the fence about this passport thing precisely because of that. Right now I think it's a waste of time mostly because there's not enough political will, nationally, to make it work, and without that it's pointless. People would fight it, individual states and governments would fight it, probably appeal to the Supreme Court - who are conservative, and so likely to overturn any action Biden takes - and so vax passport is probably a wasted and futile effort that will blow up in Biden's face if he tries it...now, anyway.

So we may have to face the prospect that we're looking at COVID Comeback in the winter if we fail to achieve herd immunity, and if we catch a nasty variant - which I suspect is likely - what history tells us is the second wave of a bug is always by far the worst.

We may have to take that really severe hit - and lose millions - before people in America are really ready to do what's actually gotta be done to finally control this bug.

I hope I'm wrong, but I don't think I am. I think we're going to get absolutely crushed this winter.

I heard an "expert" talk about that recently and he said...

May 5, 2021, 10:27 AM [ in reply to Wouldn't a vaccine passports violate HIPPA laws? ]

it would not violate HIPAA law if done "correctly". I believe there would be consent from the individual involved.
